Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

I can’t find enough superlatives to describe how wonderful it was to work with Chris. We purchased a home from someone who was a smoker. He was able to find an additive for the paint to help remove the smoke smell. Chris did a wonderful job, was punctual, and even patched some cracks before painting them. We will hire him to paint the house we are moving out of before we put it on the market!

Working with Skyline Painting was a fabulous experience! We have an old house and there was so much to be painted and touched up. Jeff Cook, the owner, graciously responded to all of our requests. He and his staff were professional, punctual, friendly and above all did a fabulous job! We have another home that requires painting and plan to have Jeff do that home as well. I can only add that it was truly a pleasure working with Skyline.

A big THANK YOU to Magic Brush Painting! They did an absolutely phenomenal job painting our house, tool shed, and staining our deck. Luis and his crew transformed our house to a home. Luis came out for the estimate. He was very pleasant and knowledgeable. He takes customer satisfaction to the nth degree! He also rolled with us when we added on items to our initial exterior paint job. He and his crew were punctual, courteous and very professional. They literally painted our house from roof to the garage door. Removed and installed new top railing to our deck. Sanded and prepared our deck for new stain. Changed out and installed new shutters. I could go on and on, but we feel the pictures speak for themselves. We would highly recommend! Thank you again MAGIC BRUSH PAINTING!

If I could give this person no stars, I would. The painter suggested a date and called me the morning of to reschedule. He came in 45 minutes late on the rescheduled date, worked for 2 hours and left, saying he was going out to lunch. He never showed up and never called me to let me know he wasn't coming back. I told him he could pick the paint as long as he could match the colors I selected. The paint color was completely off, which he should have seen since he painted next to the color I told him to match. He didn't prepare to paint: - He didn't clean the walls - He didn't put tape down - He spilled paint on the trim and a cord He only communicates via text and claims that he leaves his work phone at work. He is completely unresponsive and hasn't made any effort to finish the job. Since he was supposed to be "right back," he left paint cans all over the room. I would not recommend him but if you feel like you want to use him, make sure that you buy the paint yourself and don't give him any money until he has completed the job.

Dave completed two projects for us: touch-up and basement painting and installing basement railings. Both were done for a reasonable price and the work was high quality. Thanks again!

Pricey. Felt like they rushed through the job. There were sections of the room that were not adequately painted. Was given the impression that there would be more attention to detail. Would be worthwhile at a lesser cost

John painted three bedrooms and a hallway in our new house. He was easy to communicate with, very accommodating and did a great job at the house! John pays attention to details, leaves the work area clean and finished the job quickly. I would absolutely refer John to any of my local friends and family looking to hire a painter.

I highly recommend Ted for your painting needs. He made a plan and stuck to it resulting in a great job and completed in the timeframe he said. He was great about providing samples and placing them on all walls so I could make a sound decision on color. He also repaired my walls which had many imperfections. Professional job and a very nice guy to work with.

I rarely write reviews, but Michael is the kind of guy you want to tell everyone about. He went so far above and beyond my expectations I can't begin to justify how great he is in this little review section. His work is impeccable, his prices are very fair, his professionalism and work ethic are second to none and best of all he needs no direction, a true self starter and go getter attitude. I needed to find someone to paint my old rental home and no longer live in the area. You can imagine the angst of trying to hire someone without meeting them. He took charge from day 1 and acted as if the house was his own. He ended up doing several side projects on top of the amazing paint job and was so impressive my realtor wanted his contact info to recommend him to her clients. If you're looking for a trustworthy painter who is going to do a great job without any of the anxiety that comes with hiring a contractor, put your mind at ease and hire Michael.

On September 3rd I entered into a contract with Dambrak Painting LLC to paint the exterior of my commercial building. The job was expected to start September 9th. After reaching out to Rafael Rodriguez several times to get a confirmed start date I was told that hopefully they would at least come out on Tuesday September 10th to power wash and prep the building . He apologized and stated they took on a large interior paint job and there was nothing they could do. A crew of 4-5 guys came out power washed and left. On Wednesday September 11th a smaller crew came back and started painted. At the end of the day I spoke with a guy who Rafael Rodriguez stated was my project manager and we were under the understanding that they would not be there Thursday due to the forecast of rain. Thursday I get a call from Rafael Rodriguez stating he apologize they did not make it on Thursday due to their truck breaking down and needing breaks. I explained no problem I didn't expect them due to the forecast of rain. Then he proceeded to tell me they would not be back Friday or Saturday but will return on Sunday morning. Needless to say I was disappointed but decided to not make a big issue. Sunday, September 15th I had an employee at my business that called me around 11am and said the painters never showed up. I called Rafael Rodriguez wanting an explanation and he stated he was out doing estimates and would find out why they didn't show up and call me back. When he called me back he stated one of the guys had an emergency and they were sending a few guys out after 2. Monday, September 16th around 10 am I called Rafael Rodriguez because the painters had not yet showed up. He stated to me that they took other jobs and would not be out . At this point I was beyond upset and could not believe there lack of professionalism and how they found it so easy to disregard my business and making my project a priority. I was told they would be back on Tuesday and not leave until everything was completed. Wednesday , September 18th I get in and noticed the work was not completed and again I reached out to Rafael Rodriguez to inquire yet again when will his guys be out to complete my exterior paint job and he stated they would be coming back out Sunday September 22nd. He stated the outside temperature had to be above 74 degrees ( which was a lie)and they had to order another ladder. COMPLETELY FRUSTRATED AND BEYOND UPSET I did a walk thru and sent a list of items for the 2nd time that wasn't completed and not to mention they painted my entry door shut! After a lot of back and forth Rafael Rodriguez agreed to send a crew out Friday September 27 to complete the items on my list that were never addressed. The crew that was sent spoke NO ENGLISH and I had to speak into their phone to translate what I needed to say. This job was for a building that was under 2,500 sqf. and should have only taken 4 days maybe 5. but instead it took 3 weeks. It affected my business. It was a terrible experience, I feel that took advantage of my kindness and understanding and used it as an opportunity to over book jobs and disregard my business. I wanted to support a small business because I am one. I just chose the WRONG company to trust. They will quote a low price and they will over promise to deliver a great job and experience . PAY THE EXTRA MONEY and DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY- it was not worth the savings.

Joel recently painted murals on my garage doors. I must say, what I thought that it might look like and to see the finished product were two totally different things. Joel definitely exceeded my expectations and I am very happy that I found him. The project he had done for is so hot and dope, it doesn't even seem real. I am so pleased that I will be calling him back to do another one in my backyard. Thanks Joel, you are the man! Terrific job!
