My husband and I would really like to thank you for the awesome job you did for us. Living in Pennsylvania and buying a condo site unseen in Florida was stressfull enough. Due to an unfortunate situation that occurred we called on Susie for some interior decorating and I knew she was the right person for us after our first conversation on the phone. She listened to our ideas of what we wanted and hit everything and more right on. When we arrived in Florida (I had a broken leg and back) and saw our condo for the first time, what a shock we received. The place was BEAUTIFUL!!!! We can't say enough about what a GREAT JOB YOU DID!!!! Robin & Bob

As a mother of two and a professional I never have the time to decorate my home. I was having family coming over for the first time and I panicked when I saw what my home looked like, everything had been thrown together haphazardly. I got referred to Patricia from friends and what a lifesaver she was. She turned my living room into a pleasant and inviting place, my kids' rooms are now organized and attractive, she even organized my closet and turned my master bedroom into a welcoming retreat. I highly recommend her. She's the best!

Yolanda asked me for a review and I cannot be happier to do it for her! She did our Kitchen, and now it looks awesome. She made a presentation of several design options for me, introduced me different materials for counter top and backsplash that gave me a wider vision of inexpensive possibilities to make the kitchen looks WOW! She was constantly in search for new ideas and ways to combine together materials and color. She took care of the whole process; she referred me to cabinet makers and stone companies with incredible good prices and excellent work. She was very prompt at the start of each work day and coordinates all the people involved in the project. I highly recommend Yoly for any Interior Design project.

Cannot say enough nice things about this team! Robert and Greg were incredibly helpful in repairing both a damaged interior door and a noisy sliding porch door. Robert went above and beyond our expectations, making several trips to our home to check the type of door we needed repaired, go back and get proper materials, and reinstall the door. After seeing the damaged door that we had and shopping around for comparable replacement doors, Robert offered to have our existing door repaired rather than replacing it (which would be about half the cost). He saved us money AND the door looked brand new! All done within a couple of hours. We had a terrible whistling sound coming from one of our exterior sliding doors. Robert and Greg looked at the doors and found some weather stripping that needs replacement...it is a difficult type of weather stripping to find, and Robert has not stopped looking for it for the last week. In the meantime, he and Greg repaired a different part of the door that has completely eliminated the whistling that has been bothering us for months. They were incredibly pleasant and efficient - they worked around my work schedule without problems and were in and out for this visit in less than half an hour. I will certainly be calling Robert and Greg should we need any other repairs in the future. I highly recommend their services!

I really enjoyed this collaboration from the initial phone call to the big reveal. Each step had a level of attention to my vision that made our venture a home run. This was my first time using an interior decorator. Ms. Arnold is a consummate professional. The process could have been intimidating and overwhelming for me, but she made everything practical and respected our budget to the penny. I couldn’t be more proud to show off my home. I recommend this young lady for all of the right reasons. Trust her instinct. It’s there!

Had a great time working with Manifest Home Decor. When we started my home was organized for simplicity, with an emphasis on functionality (over form) and cleanliness (dark woods, metal and glass). It was missing a lot of the fundamental warmth indicative of a true home, and felt much like a hotel. Manifest Home Decor found ways to liven up my home, making it a more comforting place to live, while staying true to my personal aesthetic.

Looking for a personalized home decorator that will fit within your budget?! Look no further! Delilah was the perfect choice to help decorate my first home. I appreciate the time she took in assessing the rooms I wanted decorated, and her providing great concepts which didn’t break the bank! The coolest thing was the program that she uses so you can see the layout and the vision. Definitely got me excited, and will be forever grateful! Definitely not a hard decision. Trust her and the process! Worth the investment.

Andrea worked with us to decorate/design our completely empty beachfront apartment. That meant selecting everything from furniture to fabrics to painting to a new kitchen backsplash and cabinets. But she didn't stop there-the tile and furniture on our outdoor lanai created an additional (and often favorite) living space. We appreciate that Andrea listened to us and understood exactly what we wanted and then helped us do that within our budget. All this while we were often more than one thousand miles away! Within three months we enjoying our fully furnished space. She has excellent taste and offered ideas and solutions we didn't think of.

Corniche did an amazing job designing the interior for my entire home. Seh was awesome at understanding my preferences/goals for my new home. She was dependable, coordinated all details with other vendors and was quick to respond and do anything that was needed. My home is exactly what I dreamed it would be and I am always getting compliments about how beautiful it is. I can't say enough about her creative eye, ability to know what I would like, and her professionalism. I will be having her help me with my business office next.

My husband and I would EXTREMELY HIGHLY recommend Hatley and Thompson. There AREN'T ENOUGH STARS IN THE SKY TO RATE THEM!!!! We hired Hatley and Thompson for our newly constructed home in Florida while still living up north. Everything was done by email and telephone. We didn't have to spend any money or time to travel to Florida at all during the process. The finished product is breathtaking!! Every room from ceiling to floor and wall to wall is absolutely stunning and beautifully put together. We could never have done this ourselves in several lifetimes. Their expertise and extremely good taste and recommendations are priceless. I would trust them to choose everything but they made sure the home suited our likes and wants and they worked tirelessly with us to achieve this and make it our own. They went above and beyond the scope of interior design. They educated us every step of the way and gave us background on even the smallest details of the project. They even went ahead and helped us eliminate an ant problem that they noticed and educated us on hurricanes, insurance, cleaning products, table coverings and much much more. Finally, they are honest, quality people of extremely high character and we are lucky to have met them and feel as we are now friends! We would use them over and over and over!!!!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
