Dr. Crosby is awesome! My husband and I have just started marriage counseling with her. She is extremely easy to talk to. This is our first time in therapy and all I can say is that we are already communicating better after just one visit.

I have suffered from neck and back pain all of my adult life. The pain was not caused by an accident or disease, but from what I thought and accepted as just "getting older". I would dread those initial 10 minutes of trying to get out of bed in the morning because it was so painful just to try and move my body. My neck was painful and only had slight side-to-side movement. I couldn't straighten my aching back and it was agonizing to raise my arms over my head. My knees and elbows didn't want to move, and when they did, the cracking noise they made would wake up everyone in the house. Then it happened. One morning I got up and could not move my neck in any direction without excruciating pain. I made an appointment with my doctor and she examined me (but not once touched my neck), and told me that she could find nothing wrong, but if the pain persisted, to get a C.A.T. scan. Then...she said something that changed my life. She said, "Go get a massage". My wife did some research and found Gary. We looked at his website:, and found that he had over 25 years of experience as a Therapist. Even though the "types" of bodywork he offered meant little to us, as we had never heard of them before, we were, nonetheless, impressed with the fact that he seemed to be a serious professional who truly believed his treatments could help his clients. My wife made the appointment and I am eternally grateful to her for choosing Gary as my Licensed Massage Therapist. When I arrived for my first appointment, I was immediately impressed by his beautiful and professional office. We sat and talked for a long time about what physical problems I had, what results I wanted from the treatment, what sports I participated in and other interests I had. Gary then explained what he was going to do and the results which I could expect. The professional layout, cleanliness and brightness of the treatment room immediately made me feel at ease. Throughout the session, before he did anything, Gary would explain what he was about to do and why. As the massage progressed, he would explain the functions of the muscle groups to me, and how their functions affected movement and, more specifically, the problems I was having. It was obvious from the first touch that he was truly a professional who knew exactly what he was doing, and his knowledge of the body made me think that he had gone to medical school at some point in his life When my first treatment was over, I noticed that my neck didn't hurt anymore and I could move it in any direction without pain.. A few days later, I made another appointment and I have been a client of his now for the last two years. Before I tell you the results of my treatments, let me say here and now.... Gary's treatments are not limited to simply massage. He has taught me about good nutritional health and what vitamins I should be taking to improve my overall health. He has shown me simple yet effective exercises to do at home to keep my body flexible between visits. His calm and positive attitude in conjuction with his therapeutic treatments have a calming effect on my body and mind, and the peaceful sensation I experienced after each treatment would last for a couple of days...but now, that feeling remains all of the time. Now...for the result of Gary's treatments. After my first treatment, I had no pain in my neck and have been pain-free since then. My knees and elbows no longer make noise when I move them and there is no pain in any of my joints. I am also much more limber, and this has greatly improved my golf swing; bringing my handicap down from 21 to 16. I also have not been sick since I began treatments with Gary. I haven't even had a cold. I truly believe that Gary's massage therapy has improved my life beyond anything I could have imagined. Believe it or not, I literally feel younger since I started receiving therapy. He has explained why that is, but I can't put it into words what he said...and doesn't matter, because it is true. I feel better than I have in my entire life, and that is all that I care about. Make an appointment with Gary for the very best therapeutic massage you will ever receive. Then, set up a schedule of continuing treatments. You will be eternally grateful that you did.

Dr. Mahaney is a caring, calming therapist who holds the dignity and healing of her clients as paramount. I've had the pleasure of working with her and can attest to the fact that she's incredibly insightful, has great therapist instincts, and is quite literally a natural at what she does. It's rare that a person can truly find their calling; Dr. Mahaney certainly has.

When I made the decision to seek help again. I honestly didn't believe there was any for me. In that moment of desperation, all I knew was I needed to get somewhere safe. My addiction had me believing I wanted to die. Any addict reading this will understand that feeling. I had pretty much given up trying to find an open bed in a detox center. That's when Steven from Sunspire called and within a couple days I was admitted into Sunspire's 3rd party detox facility in Tampa. When I entered treatment at Sunspire Health Hyde Park on October , 2017 it was to save my life. However, being my third treatment center. I just expected more of the same. Do this, don't do that, chant the serenity prayer, do a 12 step program, and be on your way. What I got was more than this addict could have ever dreamt for; a new perspective on life. After a brief adjustment period of me wanting to control and run every aspect of Sunspire and my treatment program. Yes, me the addict who weeks before was on the edge of death knew what was best for me. Thank God for the amazing operational and clinical staff who maneuvered me through and convinced me to stay on the numerous occasions I wanted to leave because it was too much. I opened up and allowed myself to receive the treatment/services Sunspire offered. The individualized one on one therapy was eye opening and has honestly changed my life. After thirty years of using drugs to cope. I've finally come to realize that my issue isn't with drugs and alcohol; the issue is ME. My therapist individualized a treatment plan to my specific needs and with my input. This allowed me to dig deep into those things that plagued me from childhood into adulthood. The cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, psychodrama, relapse prevention, codependence, spirituality, relationships and family dynamics groups provided the knowledge, skills and tools I need to piece my life back together. Along with that they put great emphasis on NA/AA sponsorship and building a network of people outside of treatment. The outside meetings were a reintroduction to life and people clean. Reaching out and asking for help was something I just didn't do before Sunspire. I have a lot of work still to do. I am open and accepting to do that work. I have never felt so confident and as prepared to "live life on life's terms" as I do today after spending 90 days at Sunspire Health Hyde Park. For the first time in my life, I am looking forward to the future and a life in long term recovery. I finally got it and it's so simple, I never have to use again!

Thus far, all I have had was an initial intake last week with my first appointment tomorrow. Dr. Nelson gave me a homework assignment which really made me not only think but open my eyes. I have emailed her several times and her responses have been unprescented. She is always right there with encouragement, is insightful and has already been a tremendous help. I have been in therapy in the past, but I always quit when things get tough or my life becomes manageable to where I feel I don't have to face uncomfortable things. Dr. Nelson, I believe is building a foundation for me that will allow me the ease and comfort to do all the work I need to do to move forward with a healthier life. I am so grateful I found her on this site.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
