This moving company provided excellent customer service and professional expertise with the actual moving on October 27, 2015. Phil provided on target quotes for service and follow through contact regarding the moving service. James and Kensy provided professional and courteous service during the move. I will be moving again in about 7 months and will definitely hire this company with these movers. Thank you so much for your service.

Between growing up in a military family, my own time in the military, and my career in federal law enforcement, I have moved a lot in my life. Tammie, due to international business assignments, and transfers, has moved even more. In our experience, packing and moving a family household is a daunting, frustrating experience at best ... imagine moving a 3500 square foot household, plus everything we had in two storage units and a 40 x 60 garage in Naples, FL, to a 9000 square foot house in Kentucky. Simply stated, our experience with Southern Cross Moving was as good as it gets. More specifically, in our case, I had to be at our home in Kentucky and leave the pack and move issues to Tammie to deal with which, quite frankly, was a situation I was not comfortable with. After researching it, and contacting various movers, Tammie selected Southern Cross. She dealt with Greg Geffe's business partner, Brian Jones. Our move posed potential complications because people in their fifties, with six children, tend to have a lot of accumulated personal affects that they hold dear. That which is lost, or broken, cannot be replaced. Further, we have a lot of big, heavy furniture ... an industrial version of the Universal Gym, a wrought iron king size bed, a 14 foot wide, 8 foot high entertainment center, a truly enormous, L shaped executive desk, a baby grand piano, etc. We have never had a move without casualties, and we did have a couple, which were promptly brought to our attention by the movers. A desk drawer had a minor scuff mark, a hinge in a small piece broke and two mason jars out of about 500 (that we packed) broke. For their part, Southern Cross apparently touched up the minor scuff (since I cannot find it), they offered to run to the hardware store and replace the hinge, and they washed the other mason jars of soup that got messy ... which was clearly not their responsibility. My principle concern was the assembly of the Universal Gym ... if you've ever seen one of those monsters, you can imagine. It took a while, but they took their time and assembled it perfectly. It did not occur to me to be concerned about the executive desk which had been originally located immediately behind a set of double doors. Even in sections, there was no way to get it through a single door, let alone get it up stairs ... the pieces were much heavier than our piano. They took it apart, and re assembled it upstairs in my office which, without seeing this monster, you probably cannot visualize. It was quite a job, and I'm not sure that it was legitimately their problem but Brian's only comment was, "I want to put this desk where you want it." They did. In the end, the whole thing took a couple of days longer than any of us anticipated, but with good reason. Tammie and I insisted that Brian and Tyler stay with us rather than have them incur expenses related to hotels and food (which would have been theirs to absorb). I've carried a badge and gun most of my adult life - trust me when I tell you that I don't invite just anyone to move in with my family. This should be the last move of our lives, but if we had to move again, there is no way we would want to undertake it with anyone else. Bill & Tammie

I wasn't sure what kind of movers is get using Thumbtack and Ready To Move. (And I've moved a lot!) Now, I'll know to use RTM again and recommend this company and specifically my movers Ricky and John! These guys made a hard task seem easy. A traffic jam meant these two were not only moving late in an already long day, but then they came upon on my stuff. Needing to be disassembled and MANY more boxes and pieces they probably imagined. Not one complaint from them. In fact, they saw my stress and eased it immediately. They did a fantastic job well above and beyond and experience I've had with movers - even family. And more than caring for my belongings, they cared for me. And my five year old boy, who they engaged and laughed with and helped his transition from one home to another more than I could have imagined. Thank you Kimberly and the team so very much! I HIGHLY recommend Ready To Move, and if you get quoted for two guys and a truck with everything about your move seamless, believe it - and see if you can get Ricky & John. :) Elizabeth

Can't say enough about 2nd to None Movers! Norina replied to my email the same day and was able to set something up on short notice. I was on a tight budget, as all people moving, and she worked with me to keep the price to a minimum. I told her exactly what I had and she quoted me an exceptional price... When Joe and Andre came to my home, there were a couple extra pieces that were not on my initial list-- they didn't blink twice and took the furniture without question. Very professional, gentle with my furniture, kind, quick, and experienced. I would recommend 2nd to None Movers to any of my family or friends in a heartbeat. If you are looking for no nonsense hard workers, call them! You will not be disappointed!

The movers were on time, moved quickly and carefully. There were no surprise charges. Charges were discussed when they arrived and before they left. The men were pleasant and knew what they were doing. I only showed them once what needed to go. (It's my stuff and I had to make a list). I would use them again. Furniture was exchanged between 2 houses in just under 3 hours. I will recommend them to anyone!

I very seldom write reviews however these guys deserve acknowledgement for a job well done. From my first phone conversation with Pablo he was courteous and professional and assured me they would come in quickly and clean up a terrible mess my previously hired movers left behind. As a real estate professional I will highly recommend them to all my customers.

This was our first experience with Thumbtack. Master Movers responded very quickly -- especially since it was a weekend -- and established great email contact in securing the job of moving a large dining room table from one house to another. Kerstyn gave us an acceptable quote and the move was scheduled. On the day of the move, we were given a four hour timeframe. The movers were there within the first half hour, and were very professional throughout the entire move. We are happy customers and would definitely recommend their services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
