I am excited to share my experience with Susie Archer, a consummate, dynamic designer and decorator. As a couple struggling to balance between our styles, one modern and one traditional, Susie, in one meeting, was able to marry our styles. She saved us many hours of frustration in renovating our Florida townhouse. She turned our personal vision of a perfect space into a well coordinated reality. During our course of working with Susie, she proved to be an invaluable resource that saved us from making an expensive mistake as we embarked on selecting a wood floor that will coordinate with our styles and tiled floor which we had already installed downstairs. As a person who's background was a focus on color and the study of color on emotions and spatial relationship, she nailed it. She not only coordinated our different styles, but also delivered a classy, well coordinated combination between the floors, the countertops and walls. She was insightful and extremely knowledgeable of color and the effects it has on emotions and spatial relationships. She listened to our individual needs and provided us with options that will enhance our property value, coupled with a design style that works well with our existing structure and different needs. We will not do another project without her. Thanks Susie!!!!

My husband and met Jackie 7 years ago and have loved our experience of working with her. Jackie is very intuitive; she gets our style. We've selected everything from paint colors and custom furniture to outdoor sculptures with her guidance. Jackie stands behind her work and her products. We treasure her as a designer and friend.

I recently hired Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer, to redecorate our home. Judy is extremely creative with a great “design eye” and from the moment my husband and I met her we knew she was the one who would transform our house into a home we would be proud of. Judy gets me and she gets my taste. I gave her my favorite color and decor style and she worked with me on all the design details (fabric, furniture, pricing and quality). She listened to my vision of what I wanted so it was very easy for us to come together and decide on the perfect rug, furniture, light fixture, accessories, accent wall material, paint color, etc. Judy took the time to understand my needs, helped to recommend and coordinate all the trades needed, returned all of my calls and emails promptly and did an amazing job of finding unique pieces for our space. Judy used some of our existing pieces and incorporated them into the design pulling our ideas together into a cohesive plan which gave our home a polished, magazine-cover look. She has impeccable taste, an excellent eye for color, and very creative ideas to make any home beautiful and outstanding which is exactly what she has done for our home and provided excellent service all the way through. I can’t thank her enough! Judy is a pleasure to work with and makes the whole experience relaxing and fun. For all your interior design needs, contact Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer. You will be so glad you did! Marjorie Jackson, Coral Springs, Florida

Mark designed my beach house in a casual style but not the expected style. His take on it was that the way we entertained and our lifestyle. The color palette is great and so is the art and accessories. The overall house now feels and functions (we have storage!) like a home and not just a weekend place. He was also conscience of our dogs and cats. Mark is working on our other home to be ready for move in early 2016. budget 10-20k

Diana was a joy to work with. I'd never consulted with an interior designer before, but she after she met with me, she put me totally at ease as she seemed to know exactly what I liked and she presented choices that were in line with my preferences. She was always extremely professional, prompt to appointments, courteous, and accommodating to my needs. When snags arose with vendors and issues with some of the furniture, she handled them quickly and efficiently. Although we went a bit over budget, everything worked beautifully together and I'm so pleased with how our new home looks! What I appreciated most about working with her was that I didn't have to go from store to store to find what I wanted, as some other designers indicated would be necessary; instead, Diana did all the leg work and presented to me several choices that she had determined that I would like which was such a stress-reliever and time saver! I would highly recommend Diana for any home decorating needs! I'll be using her more in the future as well. I had interviewed two other decorators, but I'm so glad I chose Diana!

I cannot say enough good things about Eden Designs. After meeting with Moe for an initial consultation, I retained Eden Designs to design my newly purchased property and I couldn’t be happier with their results. They are always extremely responsive, work diligently, and all for an extremely reasonable price considering Moe’s level of expertise in design. I routinely recommend Eden Designs to all of my family and friends and they all have had amazing experiences as well.

I wanted to have a designer's look decor but I did not have the budget to hire a profesional designer. My boss told me about Decorator's Way design consultation service so I call them and scheduled a meeting. Melissa came to my apartment and within a few hours she was able to guide me on defining my design style, selected paint colors for the walls and recommended the right window shades. The next day I received a proposal with various furniture and accessories options that worked with my budget and totally related to my personal style. I never thought I would be able to hire a professional designer but Decorators Way made it possible.

Andrea has a wonderful color sense and aesthetic. She helped me create a room that is beachy casual yet sophisticated enough for a formal party. Everything works seamlessly. There is a table for every drink, a reading light where necessary light to read from most chairs as well a pillows for comfort. She made my dream come true with reasonable expense. I would recommend her to anyone!

My experience working with Tammy was outstanding! I consulted with her at a time in my life when I needed to gain a different perspective about work and my relationships. She shared some powerful insights regarding ways to restructure my paradigms and my home. It was an enlightening session. And now I feel more balanced and ready to cope with personal issues in a much more healthy way.

What a blessing to have met Anais and to have found such unique (mostly wood, including boatwood and tree trunk stools and tables) at Broward Design Center. Anais took my whole new apartment project from initial design through every important choice to be made. From the gorgeous grey wall color she chose, to the furniture sizing, selection, wall hangings and even super cool pillows, she helped find in my style, she really listened. I learned so much and people love my place and the spirit that was created here with Anais. She was super efficient and she always kept my interests in mind first. Very humble, yet you know she knows her stuff! Will use her again, highly recommended!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
