Found Rick to be very hard working, honest, professional and pleasant to deal with. I have a rental unit that needed various things done (painting, hanging mirrors, installing beadboard in bathroom, etc). Rick was wonderful and works quickly to get things done. I'd highly recommend him.

I recently had to remodel my kitchen. I called Yoli. She came to my house. Very professional. Took measurements and pictures. Within a week she had drawings and samples of material and came up with a plan to take my kitchen from eh to wow. She worked within my budget. Yoli came up with color and design schemes that I never thought of. Her workers did the job around my schedule. They cleaned up at the end of each day. I had my new kitchen in less than 5 weeks. I am now proud to have people over and display my new kitchen. I highly recommend Yoli to anyone that is looking to give your home a new look. Johnny Basso

Susan completed an entire home plan design for me. She took a 6000 sf new construction house and creatively turned ithe project into a beautiful home. She worked extensively with the builder to achieve a living environment that only a true professional could achieve. She spent the time to understand the needs of the family and provided insight and ideas that complemented the function of each room. She accomplished this through organization and hard work. The design was creative and functional. She also did this on time and under budget!

I called Kevin Cruz to help me with the design and construction of an extra bedroom and bathroom in my house. He made the process really easy and fast, and was always on top of everything. He did an amazing job and I don't think I could be any happier with my "new" home.

I hired A. Keith Powell Interior about a month ago to help with the design of my under construction new home. I knew as soon as I saw his website and previous projects that he was the right designer for us. Such an eye for detail, such passion in his projects and just the right feel for design and yet not overdone. This was only confirmed when I meet with Keith in person. He has a feel for what a home needs and what the client is looking for. He is never short on ideas and has a plethora of contacts. Keith is always available for questions and almost certainly has an answer. I am looking forward to seeing more of Keith's ideas and plans for our home over the next months of completing our dream home.

Vee knocked it out of the park. Hired Vee to design a home office. From concept to finish she was there every step of the way. The results are amazing, there is no way we could have incorporated so many elements without her guidance, knowledge and great taste. She thinks of every detail and has a wealth of relationships for every aspect including furniture, fabrics, electrical, painting, wall coverings, technology, lighting, carpentry and who knows what else. She sources each item from the best supplier for your needs / tastes, which is much more work but the results are astounding. I would definitely recommend Vee to anyone and will be using her to help with the rest of the house. She's a great find!

Andrea worked with us to decorate/design our completely empty beachfront apartment. That meant selecting everything from furniture to fabrics to painting to a new kitchen backsplash and cabinets. But she didn't stop there-the tile and furniture on our outdoor lanai created an additional (and often favorite) living space. We appreciate that Andrea listened to us and understood exactly what we wanted and then helped us do that within our budget. All this while we were often more than one thousand miles away! Within three months we enjoying our fully furnished space. She has excellent taste and offered ideas and solutions we didn't think of.

My husband and I would EXTREMELY HIGHLY recommend Hatley and Thompson. There AREN'T ENOUGH STARS IN THE SKY TO RATE THEM!!!! We hired Hatley and Thompson for our newly constructed home in Florida while still living up north. Everything was done by email and telephone. We didn't have to spend any money or time to travel to Florida at all during the process. The finished product is breathtaking!! Every room from ceiling to floor and wall to wall is absolutely stunning and beautifully put together. We could never have done this ourselves in several lifetimes. Their expertise and extremely good taste and recommendations are priceless. I would trust them to choose everything but they made sure the home suited our likes and wants and they worked tirelessly with us to achieve this and make it our own. They went above and beyond the scope of interior design. They educated us every step of the way and gave us background on even the smallest details of the project. They even went ahead and helped us eliminate an ant problem that they noticed and educated us on hurricanes, insurance, cleaning products, table coverings and much much more. Finally, they are honest, quality people of extremely high character and we are lucky to have met them and feel as we are now friends! We would use them over and over and over!!!!!!

I highly recommend Eden! Our interior designer Moe did a fantastic job. We were skeptical at first, but after we shared our vision with him, he made it a reality and better. He wasn’t pushy and considerate of our opinions and requests. And when he says it works, BELIEVE HIM because it does! Over all it was a fantastic experience and our home looks great.

Kathy was the 3rd designer I worked with on our home and I have to say, she was just a pleasure! She listened to me and saw my vision and was able to deliver exactly what I wanted BELOW budget. She has a great eye and is amazing at finding options at varying prices so I was able to pick and choose where to indulge and where to cut corners. Hands down one of the best designers in the Boca area.

My wife and I are building a 3000 SF custom home in Southwest Ranches (Broward) and we can both definitely say that Mike is the best architect would could have hoped for (and we interviewed many). He is always available to answer our questions and stays closely in touch with our general contractor to make sure that the building process is smooth and without any issue. As a real estate broker, I will not hesitate to recommend Mike and his team at Prism Architecture to any client of mine in need of a great and affordable architect. Can't wait to finish the house and invite him over for a drink!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
