Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.

Larry is extremely knowledgeable about the golf swing with over 40 years of teaching experience. I went to see him because I had a hook in my swing that I could not kick. I had one lesson and he immediately pointed out the flaw in my grip and now my hook is gone which feels great! I added more lessons with him and have improved my swing every week I attend. My scores keep getting lower and I can’t wait to get out on the golf course and practice what I’ve learned. I’ve played golf for many years and now looking back I don’t understand how I never picked up a coach because you really need to understand the basics if you want to play well. Larry knows the basics and then some. I would highly recommend Larry to anyone who is looking to improve their game. 👍🏻

Golf Pro never showed. The country club had never heard of the golf pro when I arrived. I reached out before my lesson for the pros direct contact and never heard from them. I was finally contacted 50 minutes after the start of my session saying they were reaching out to the pro to fine out what happened and I still never heard back hours later. Worst experience ever. I would not trust going through a 3rd party as this is just the middle man that sets up the appointment. Would not recommend.

I happened to be in Boca for a day with a bit of time to kill and found Chris via thumbtack. I have been looking for quality golf instruction for some time and hadn’t spent time trying to find it in the greater New York area. Chris is a master instructor. He quickly adapted his teaching to my style of learning and zeroed in on the key reasons for my inconsistency. Given that I only had one day, he immediately suggested a 2 hour lesson, knowing that it takes time to learn something truly substantive. I only took 5 full swings (at the end of the lesson) after many iterations of shorter swings and each one felt better than most swings I have taken before. I am very glad I found Chris and will be returning for more lessons any time I am in the Miami area.

As a new golf addict desperate to learn this challenging game, I went through three teachers and my problems were still the same. Each of my former teachers had listed my many issues...too much grip pressure, not enough rotation, not enough hip thrust, no forward shaft lean, feet firmer to the ground...etc etc etc ad nauseam. I felt I was twisted up like a pretzel, and my game was going nowhere. I wasn't going to practice the "Einstein Theory" of doing the same thing and expecting a different result. So one day I went on the Google machine and did my own due diligence and found a man who I thought could help unwind me, and that was Chris. Holy Cow! Four months later, I am a golfer!!!!! From the first day, Chris' calm confident demeanor was the perfect cadence for me. We went right to the fundamentals....he unwound this tight pretzel and started from the beginning...the fundamentals. The simple idea...."what propels the ball and how do you get it to your target?" He completely de-evolved both my swing and my swing thoughts. He kept it simple. And my game began to transform on lesson one. We don't spend any time talking about score or handicap, but I have gone from a 40 to a 25 and going down. In fact I am playing in my first Pro-Am in Vegas next month. Before Chris I was ready to throw my bag in the lake, and admit golf wasn't for me. That hurt me so badly because I love the game so much. Chris found the game I always had in me and through his unique talents was able to do what others couldn't..transfer those teaching gifts directly to my on course performance. I am so grateful!
