Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

I had another electrician quote me a price of $150 for parts, and $50 labor. It took Rocketman about 45 minutes to fix the issue, and he only charged me $30. Rocketman was punctual, and very professional.

Did everything he quoted. We'll be having him come back for the next phases on our remodel. Very happy with the professionalism and follow through. We've been through a few companies in the area over the years and it's nice to finally have a reliable electrician to go with. David has been a gem during this massive remodel.

The electrician arrived exactly on time. He explained what the job entailed, then worked until the work was complete. He cleaned up every bit of debris from his work. I would hire him again and have already recommended him to a friend. His price was surprisingly reasonable. I am delighted with the result. Thank you.

Absolutely Incredible, Arrived early, did not try the usual pressure up-sell. Fast , friendly and efficient. Completed repair in a fraction of the time I thought was needed. Our day was barely interrupted . Major fuse box repair was required, and done by a true gentleman. I cannot describe the weight removed from my shoulders knowing that the work was done by a true professional. No profiteers here. You can feel confident when hiring this firm, that you are being told the truth about your true needs. Our technician was Vinny and he was truly a breath of fresh air when it comes to dealing with contractors in this area of scam artists. If I could give him 10 stars, I would. Thank you Federal Electric for restoring my faith in humanity. God bless all of you involved with this company. Please keep up the good work. I will refer you to anyone I know who needs a good , and honest, electrician. Again, thank you very much.

The owner almost immediately contacted me once I placed a request for an electrician and he assured me he could do the job. He came to my condo the very next day to see the job and I felt very comfortable that he would do what he said he could do. We put together a list of supplies that he would need of which I went shopping for (my choice as he offered to get the needed supplies). He provided me his cell number and I was able to text him with several questions I had about the exact supplies needed. He immediately responded with the answers. We made an appointment for him to return later in the afternoon to do the job. I couldn't be more happy with the outcome. He didn't even mind me looking over his shoulder asking questions. I would highly recommend this company to anyone. Conroy was professional and you could see he takes great pride in his work at a very reasonable cost. Request his services....you won't be disappointed.

Mr. Torres came to my home to install a ceiling fan in my son's bedroom. I was impressed with his price and fast installation. He spent one half hour in the work and his charge was $75.00. However, about a week after the installation, the fan started making noises. I called Mr. Torres about the problem and we made an appointment for him to come Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. to fix the noise issue. He didn't show and no call from him informing me that he was either was going to be late or that he could not make the appointment. So I called him on his cell and his excuse was that he was held up on a job. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, so we made another appointment for him to come that next day at 10:00 A.M. Again, he did not show!!! I strongly believe that he had no intentions of correcting the installation issue. I cannot give him a good review so that now I have to contact another electrician to correct the problem. Not reliable!!!
