My experience with Kristy was definitely once in a life time opportunity.. I came to her broken, lost, triggered, and hopeless. I could no longer manage my life or my mental health any longer. (It’s so hard to find a good therapist, I’ve seen many!) At the time I went to see her I was very closed minded to the idea until I got to see for myself how much she truly cared to help change my life. She was the first therapist I had who actually put in the dedication to help me as a person.. Not only was she a great therapist, but an amazing life coach. She truly cared and that means a lot! Through the months I saw her we did deep digging into my trauma so I could be released from everything I struggled with internally.. generalized anxiety, ptsd, depression etc. She helped me gain my life back and gave me the proper tools to be able to function on a daily basis. Forever am I grateful to her.

I highly recommend Dr. Susie. From the first session, I felt a great connection. Dr. Susie is not only wonderful listener, but also a brilliant advisor. She helped me peel back layers to understand not only how and why I was viewing a situation a certain way, but also how and why others might see it differently. After experiencing several disappointing therapy sessions with other psychologists, I am so grateful to have found Dr. Susie. She truly helped me develop a healthy perspective. I leave her office feeling unburdened, optimistic and empowered. I highly recommend her!

Rose Serenity Wellness Center gave me an experience that left me speechless, when I first spoke to my therapist Mrs. Guerline she gave me a peaceful atmosphere I felt that we can talk about my issues and not feel that I was being judged at all, and she made me feel relaxed calm, anxiety went away immediately, after sitting with her, she then had me do mindful peace meditation therapy with the other therapist which even made me feel more at ease and peaceful, and I am telling you if you want an amazing experience feeling refresh and renewed go to Rose Serenity Wellness Center you will leave feeling amazing, and this was in my first session, I am in my 5th session and I feel amazing every time I leave that place.

I was very anxious and somewhat depressed and this greatly affected my enthusiasm for life. Garry has helped me see problems in a new light ( and it turns out lots of problems were not real problems, l just saw them that way.) So l felt better after that. Then he took me through some bereavement therapy, which l hadn't considered before, and that has made a huge difference. Garry is compassionate and easy to talk to, l am so very glad l went to see him he has really helped me become more positive and less procrastinating. Highly recommended, thank you Garry !

My experience was very satisfying! Georgia worked with my son for a short period of time not because his therapy session was short but because she broke through and helped my son over come so much in a short period of time! She made him feel very comfortable in expressing his self which was very difficult in the past for him! Georgia is very determined in helping your family over come any problems or issues to get through and conquer! A+

I found her by the grace of God . She saved our marriage .. We now have a better marriage then we thought we could have . She has taught both my husband and I how to really love each other and communicate our feelings . She also helped us with other issues that were destroying our marriage ..and got through to my husband which I never thought would happen . She saw me many times alone and really helped me to understand myself . We are still in therapy not as often as we were . My husband actually looks forward to going.. We know if we slip we can see her and we come out of her office feeling renewed .. Thank you Riana..

The TIR (Trauma Incident Reduction) sessions I very recently took part in were very helpful to me. I'm glad I did! TIR helps one to put the past into perspective; in "its' place", no longer causing emotional triggers. This kind of therapy enables one to appreciate even the worst of circumstances & acquire compassion for our self & others. There are so many ideas and tips which Laura gave in order to meet each day & any issue with confidence. TIR is a valid avenue to try in order to shed those "triggers" & move on with life. I highly recommend it. Laura gives her all to help you & respects each individual. Thanks Laura!

"Luna was a refreshing change from those my son had worked with in the past. She was very compassionate, but was also realistic and matter-of-fact. Her approach was fresh and innovative, not preachy or patronizing, which we had seen plenty of in the past. She did explore the underlying causes of my son's addictive and self-destructive behavior ( and these always exist), and helped him understand these. But while she was caring, understanding, and supportive of his feelings of pain, she did not allow him to hide behind these or use these as an excuse. This is very important, as all addicts play the "blame game" as a way to deflect taking responsibility for their own behavior. We had family counseling, as any addiction becomes a family disease, and all members play a part in the problem. Luna was the most knowledgable and skillful therapist I had ever worked with. She is effective, and again, very understanding and compassionate. She helped me to see my part in my sons disease, and, most importantly, gave me encouragement and hope for the future. Another significant, if not the most significant, difference in Luna's counseling, is the directive nature of her therapy. It is good to listen and let a patient or family member vent their frustrations and feelings, but that is not enough. Addiction is a complicated and frustrating disease. If we all knew how to improve the situation, we would be doing so already. What the addict and family members need is clarification of positive steps and how to accomplish them. Luna was superb in this area, and both my son and we left each session with clear identification of areas to work on and specific direction as to how to implement improvements. This was key to my sons success. My son entered treatment 2 years and 2 months ago. He has been out of any formal treatment and halfway house living arrangements for a year. He has been sober most of that year, with a few "stumbles" during that time. Nothing long term, and I know he will never fall into that lifestyle again. It is remarkable to see the growth and change in him. For the first time since he began drinking, he wants to stay sober, which is something he never wanted to do. He credits Luna as the single therapist who could reach him and show him that this was not only desirable, but achievable. I would highly recommend Luna for therapy for any individual and/or family who is grappling with an addiction, or any other detrimental psychological issue." MC, Chicago, IL

The session was very comforting, especially since it was my first time doing therapy I felt comfortable and at ease with her. She was very professional and very objective when it came to the issues and and extremely tactful when it came to certain subjects. She was able to naturally pick up on cues where uncomfortable moments of uneasiness and was respectful to both parties. I would highly recommend her she's extremely well knowledgeable and is able to make something that could be sensitive and uncomfortable feel very natural.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
