Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

Eric was very nice and understanding. I did a photo shoot with my two dogs and he was patient while I worked with them to try to get them to cooperate. He always replied to my messages and went out of his way to get me the memory stick of the pictures. This was my first photo shoot experience and I enjoyed it.

I booked her several months before our large family photo shoot and then she called and cancelled 2 weeks before the shoot. Luckily she found someone else to do the shoot and everything worked out. I can’t rate her as I have never met her. She is however, editing our pictures, so I’m anxious to see the outcome.

We hired Tanya to do our maternity photo shoot at the beaches and she went above and beyond what we could have asked for. She was prompt, professional, an obvious expert at her craft and made it such an enjoyable experience for us. She was great with communicating with me before the shoot about attire and questions I had, as well as after the shoot. She accommodated for us to do a milk bath shot that I really wanted and was happy throughout the whole experience. I would most definitely recommend her and use her again for future events.

I am a published author and this was my first time doing a major photoshoot. Destynee was able to take my vision and translate it better than I could have communicated and went out of her way before hand to ensure I had everything I needed for the shoot prior from lighting to the right attire for photo contrast to back drops which let me know she is a pro at what she does. Being behind the camera can be a bit awkward but I immediately felt comfortable and like I could be myself. Her passion for photography was evident as she even took time to tell me her story as a photographer throughout the shoot which was super inspiring for me as a writer. I had such a great time and have already recommended her to several people I know from my everyday friends to the everyday professional. Definitely looking forward to shooting with her in the near future!

Xenja is an EXCELLENT photographer! She shot my graduation photos for a very good value. She responds quickly to you and is extremely flexible. She showed up to the location way before the start of the shoot. She provides great direction during the photoshoot and the QUALITY is out of this world. Xenja has great editing skills and has clearly shown her willingness to make her customers satisfied. I will definitely book her in the future!

My daughter, husband and I had just moved to jacksonville this summer due to military. With the holidays and our daughters birthday coming up we wanted to get out family photos done as well as our daughters 2 year photos. I spoke to mike about a week or two before our actual shoot. He answered any and all questions I had and explained if needed be. Well we had bad weather the day we originally planned but he was more than willing to reschedule for a different day. The day of our shoot even though we happened to be late he was already set up and very polite as well as worked very well with us. I had a cranky toddler but he still got some outstanding shots of her as well as he took his time. He didn't put a time limit on or shoot which I loved especially with having a crazy toddler on your hands pictures can be hard to take.. He was the only one that offered as much as as we needed to get it done. Everyone else only offered an hour or you had to pay extra. It took him a day or two to get my back all my photos edited and able to share on facebook as well as email them to family. He is defiantly a photographer you should use or at least consider. I know I will be making him my families photographer for the duration that we live here.

After discussing the details of our outdoor shoot and expressing to him exactly what it was we wanted. Marc was able to capture precisely what we had in mind. His professionalism and expertise really sets the bar. I would without a doubt recommend him to anyone looking to take portrait style photos. He will definitely bring the GQ/Vogue Magazine model out of you. I look forward to working with Marc Robert's Photography again in the future.

Ariel and her husband were absolute pleasures to Work with. From the beginning communication was efficient and flexible - working with both my pregnancy brain and crazy work schedule. She was punctual and well prepared! They were great working with a hyperactive 2.5 year old and very patient which is important during a family photo shoot. They’re an excellent team at tackling little ones and taking quality photos. We are very pleased with the quality of work and thing the value based on price is very reasonable. We look forward to working with Ariel again!

My experience working with Eric was wonderful. I hired him to shoot my surprise proposal on the beach. Eric was punctual, kind, and extremely accommodating. He remained inconspicuous, so that my girlfriend was unaware he was there! He even stuck around an extra hour to make sure we were happy with all of our poses/shots. His turnaround time was quick as well - about 2-3 days. Our photos turned out great and we couldn't be happy with Eric's work product. I highly recommend Eric if you are in need of a talented, easy-going photographer!

Richard arrived punctually and is very easy going. He came with his hand held cannon camera, and did not bring additional lighting with him. It turns out he did not need equipment or special lighting. He did not direct much, and we chose our poses for ourself. However, his laid back demeanor was great for our family because we liked taking charge of the types of photos we captured. It gave us a sense of control over what was at first uncomfortable as we didn’t know how to pose. Over time, we figured out what worked best. Richard followed us as we figured it out. He was with us for almost 2 hours on Friday and we paid $150, and got our final edited photos by Tuesday. He was very accommodating and flexible. I recommend Richard for an affordable, easy going photographer, for a family that enjoys deciding their own angles and places for photos. If you want a highly strict/ serious/ directing photographer, do not go with Richard! If you want a laid back experience where you control much of the shoot, definitely hire Richard! We will hire him again for next year’s photos as he is good at capturing candid family moments. Thank you, Richard! We love our photos.

So first let me point out that nothing in this review will come close to the words I need to describe Michael. Michael was incredible. We had him come out to do corporate headshots and after we got what we needed we had a fun shoot as well. It was such a good time. Michael had such good energy and brought everything we could possible need. The pictures came out great and I can't wait to use him again for the next time I need a photographer!

Laura was very responsive, enthusiastic and professional and really worked hard to please this customer and she understood what I was looking for! Having an active 2 year old was a tiresome task when the weather was off and on! She did a very good job at capturing him with all his energy. The pictures of him are adorable and I’m very pleased with her quality and “her patience”. You will be very happy with her personality and her determination to make your photo shoot a moment to cherish! Thank you Laura for your valuable time and commitment to quality and our happiness!

I reached an agreement with Marcus Roberts Photography to shoot our wedding (surprise wedding, so time is tight) Dec 31, 2019 from 6pm to midnight. This agreement was for Marcus the Main photographer and an additional photographer/videographer Marcus’s words ”the second person is mainly videography the whole night”. The original videographer cancelled, and I was NOT notified, instead Marcus brought his wife to assist. She is not a trained wedding videographer. Marcus also took up 30 minutes of our secret photo shoot to set up lighting (taking couple photos before everyone arrived we agreed 6pm to 730pm was couples photos). Instead of showing up early/communicating beforehand this was going to take time… Also, his lights were cable powered. Marcus did not bring 2 power extension cords. The time I am supposed to be getting ready, I am running around looking for another power cord. I made very clear beforehand that I wanted to recreate my grandparents wedding photo. I sent him examples before hand as well as had the photo on site. (Please refer to attached photo). Marcus’s wife even reminded him several times throughout the night that I wanted all my dress in the pictures (I had a chapel train). He said, “yeah yeah I got it”. Obviously as seen in attached photos he did not. Marcus’s wife video recorded before the ceremony and the ceremony. Not filming anything afterwards(at least no videos I received). The agreement was from 6pm to midnight. Marcus states his wife left around 10:40pm, but I have no video proof after the ceremony ended, 945pmish (the latest) to state that she was there later. He even agreed that she left early. I reasonably asked Marcus Roberts Photography for a $400 refund on the $500 for the second person. I said I understand you had to hire a babysitter, so I don’t mind assisting in that, at least the ceremony was recorded. But after that you breeched the contract and did not stay and record as requested. NYE count-down was missed, the cake cutting was missed. All parts I now cannot get back from our special day. I also stated I did not get the ONE photo I asked for. He offered to come back and reshoot that for us, I explained that a bride is not a simple put on a dress and voila. He messed up the pictures and needed to also pay for the hair and makeup redo $180 total. He refused saying he was going above and beyond just to come back and reshoot a couple of photos. In total I was asking $580 refund out of the $1,700 paid. I asked a reasonable amount of money back to recreate my couple photos as he messed up, and then for the second personal, as she was not a wedding trained professional. I was happy with his action photos of the party, but nothing else. I have no acceptable family portraits and no “formal” couple portrait I can print and place on my walls, I asked 3 times to make sure he got all the faces and we offered to move the flowers hanging, Marcus stated “no no I got were good”. He refused and offered $400 then $450, but I had to sign a refund contract. I said please send over the contract for review (please review attached). He asked that I am not allowed to express “disparage” orally or via written media. If I was to spread bad word of mouth or leave a bad review I was to pay him $2,500 in damages. Also, if a friend whom I confided in b/c I was upset with his services was to post a bad review, I would owe him damages of $2,500. I politely asked him to remove this, as the refund was for breach of contract and misrepresentation of services and abilities provided. He has refused to remove this portion of the contract, so I have refused to sign it. Instagram : marcrobertsphotography

Mr. Rabinowitz was very personable and passionate about his craft. What I loved most about his service was that he worked with me over a number of days, with precision and colorful energy/personality, to insure my very first professional shoot was completed to perfection. I appreciate that I was't rushed and that I had time to make the necessary changes in outfits to meet the requirements for my book release. A gentlemen. A consummate professional. I will use his service again. Timely. Proficient. Patient. Polite. Precise. Cost-efficient. I had hundreds of hits worldwide on Facebook after posting one of his photos of me. Thank you sir! In a panic I last minute reached out to Tanya to see if I could book a maternity photoshoot with her because the other photographer that I had set a date with had not been responding to my emails. Tanya was super prompt and very professional. I was able to book the session for the same day that I originally wanted, which was amazing because my husband had that day off too. I explained to Tanya the vision that I had for this shoot which was a beach sunset with pink clouds. My heart was really set on this idea, and I am so happy that I was able to find Tanya because she listened to what I wanted and made it happen. I loved working with Tanya because she helped us pick the time and location, which took that stress off me. She helped guide us on angles and poses which made us feel a lot more comfortable. We had a blast working with, lots of laughs which made the whole thing a lot of fun! We got soooooo many beautiful pictures from the shoot. Not only did I get the gorgeous pink cloud pictures I was dreaming of but I ended up getting so many more that I absolutely love as well. Thanks so much Tanya for the great experience!
