I have used EJ for small and large jobs around the house. He is very good- efficient, clean, on time, and trustworthy! He's been working on patching, plumbing. Installations and floor projects around the house among other things. Im sure he could handle just about anything. I'm wrapping up a renovation and he is tying up the loose ends- although if I had him the whole time it would have been a much better renovation! Outside of his quality work, EJ seems to be an overall good person. I have animals and a small child who all follow him around when he's working and EJ couldn't be nicer to them. I trust him with my home if I am or am not there. His prices are incredibly reasonable and he will work with you every step of the project to help you keep costs down. He's the first contractor/handyman I've had that I feel has the homeowners best interest at heart.

I cannot say enough good things about Ehren and his business. He is professional. A gentleman. Hard-working. Service-oriented. His professionalism includes making sure he is licensed and insured, his positive attitude, good communication, honesty and promptness. We hired Ehren for "handyman" tasks around our house, but he can do much more. He has years of experience building houses. When he was handling tasks for us, he knew the details of what was behind the walls. There isn't anything he can't tackle. He did not hire sub-contractors. Ehren's labor estimate was "spot-on". We needed his assistance in estimating materials costs. He provided us w/ options and we ended up saving $1000 on materials. He works with another man, Paul. Paul is also a hard-working, pleasant gentleman. Both men are a pleasure to have around the house while they work. One of the jobs I hired Ehren to do was to replace a 4' wood fence w/ a 6' vinyl fence. I can't stress enough how hard working Ehren and Paul are. They didn't hesitate to work in the rain to get the job done. We had a hiccup w/ replacing a shower head and also an entry door. There were never any "sighs" or "rolling of the eyes" if something needed to be changed. Just the willingness to do the job the way we wanted it done and to go the extra mile [or hour] to make it happen. If I had questions in order to understand something, they were never impatient or defensive with me. Another advantage with Ehren - this is his full-time job. He started on a Monday morning and was finished in a week. We have already asked Ehren to provide another quote for a couple of extra items we want done. We also have plans to hire him in a few months when we make a few other improvements. We highly recommend Ehren for anything you need done around your house. Thank you! Sandra

I knew this would be a difficult project from the outset. I have previously renovated five very old houses by myself and sold all for record high prices at the time. It was thus difficult for me to relinquish control to a contractor due to my other priorities. Mark's approach to high level estimation and design won my confidence in the face of formidable competition from well known companies. Then came the actual detailed design back and forth which Mark dealt with patiently and with great ideas until I was finally satisfied. His well presented project plan cemented the deal. Depth of experience gained from years in major construction ensures that Mark has the upper hand when dealing with dealers, sub-contractors and the inevitable unforeseen problems problems that arise during an intricate building project such as mine. I have seen Mark acquit himself well during all of the above project activities. When all else fails Mark rolls up his sleeves and takes care of business himself....something I have come to prefer as he does the job so much better than the subs. Mark's insightful quick thinking and managerial confidence during the various crisis moments ensured that my money was not wasted. He enjoys what he does. It is easy for me to allocate the five star rating.....

As a Real Estate agent, I have reached out to Josh many times to serve my clients needs. He is able to help both buyers and sellers with getting their issues taken care of. Estimates, bids, projects, and just general knowledge of the process make him an incredibly valuable asset to my team. He just gets things done and is very responsive along the way.

I had some wood rot to the faucet on my roof. Called Reed's Renovation and Repair to get an estimate. He showed up on time and listened to my needs and then looked everything over very throughly and gave me a good price for the repair. After having other contractors look at the work I went with Reed's Renovation and Repair due to the professionalism that Mr Reed showed at our first meeting. He showed up early on the day of the job and did a great job. I will definitely call Reed's Renovation and Repair again for any of my home remodeling needs.

I am a Realtor in St Augustine. Jorge was prompt in contacting the new owner of the home and meeting me and the owner for an estimate. The work was 10 or so post-closing repairs on a very nice home in downtown St Augustine. Jorge did all the various repairs and replacements on the home to the owner's satisfaction at a competitive price and in a timely fashion. Jorge is the first person I think of for home repairs, but I've seen pictures of his craftsmanship with building homes, installing kitchens, bathrooms, floors, building custom arbors and amazing wood working. His abilty to handle so many different tasks makes him a one-stop-shop.

I went to Zach looking to have my kitchen countertops upgraded and some light renovation work. He answered all of my questions and helped me figure out exactly what I wanted to have done. His work was quick and professional and fairly priced. The finished product is better than I could have imagined and I know it wouldn't have been done as quickly or as beautifully if I had not hired Zach to get the job done! I'll definitely be using him for my next remodel job, no doubt! I would recommend him to anyone looking for quality kitchen and bath work.

Our home addition involved many projects and L&M was there the whole way through. They arrived early and stayed late if needed and came well prepared with the right tools for the job. From framing to sheet-rock and doors to windows L&M can handle it all. They also gave us some great ideas and suggestions. We were most impressed with the craftsmanship involved with the interior trim work, custom built-in entertainment center and tile-granite work in our beautiful spa bath. We highly recommend L&M and will be using their services again for our new fence, arbor and raised flower beds. With quality work and fair pricing "These guys are good"

We love the new kitchen! Jeff took time to listen to us and, as a result, we got exactly what we wanted. I wish it was faster, but we are responsible as well, taking too long to make necessary selections. Overall, great experience!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
