A bit pricey with what we're used to coming from Dallas, but even though the movers were about an hour & a half late, they did keep me updated on the expected arrival time. They were very fast & willing to do anything I asked of them. They actually managed to store a 16' rental truck worth of belongings into a very specified area in my garage. They handled all of my stuff as if it were their own. They even greeted me with a handshake. That's rare now days. One of the guys was the owners son. He looked small, but he could actually lift more weight than the other guy who was bigger. I digress, they are fast, efficient, very courteous, & knowledgeable. Hire these guys, you won't be disappointed.

I was left high and dry by another mover at the last minute. Edgar and his men stepped up with 36 hours notice and did a great move. They were friendly, professional, efficient and fast. The cost was extremely reasonable compared to some of the earlier estimates I received. Edgar was very responsive and communicative an obviously cares a great deal about providing excellent service. I would not hesitate to recommend Sunset Moving to anyone and, in fact, already have.

Trying to choose a moving company can be very difficult because it seems the claims can sometimes be too good to be true. But this company was perfect. I like it when someone does his job perfectly without any need for a reminder. I am always keen on locating such service providers. That is how I ended up with these movers. By the first call, I was sure I had chosen the best team. They tried their best to ensure there were no disappointments. I am so grateful to them.

Wow! What an amazing service and these guys worked so fast! They disassembled beds quickly and wrapped up the furniture which was so nice because my last movers didn't do that. I will use them again once I move my things out of storage and would recommend them to anyone.

They did a great job! We are very pleased with the services provided by R&A. They are responsive, reliable and very professional. We hired them at the last minute to move a mirrored dining table and chairs from WPB to Boca. They took good care of our furniture. We will hire them again in the future.

Lance was FANTASTIC. I needed a queen mattress, boxspring, bedhead, foot board, and slats moved from my place to my sisters across town. Lance and his helper wrapped my mattress and boxspring in plastic mattress covers (included in the move) and they had the project completed within an hour. I live on the second floor (apartment( and the bed was going to my sisters on her second floor of her home. $130 for everything. No time limit, no extras, it was great not having to be hit with hidden charges like movers normally do. I even asked for him to take apart the bed at my sisters (that we were relaxing with my queen) and he added $10 on for that! Amazing. Definitely hiring him again for all jobs I can.

Due to a mechanical problem with their truck it set our move a day behind and we ran into problems rescheduling the elevator. The movers were very good and the move went smoothly once it started.

I used Homeland Movers when I made my big move from Brooklyn, NY to Boca Raton, Fl. At first I was nervous about trusting any company with my entire life's worth of belongings, but once I sat down and spoke with the guys at Homeland I knew everything would be just fine. To my surprise this big move was pulled off effortlessly, not one single issue occurred!! I chose to use their package where they came to pack all of my stuff as well as having them store it (last minute decision of course!!) But they worked with me and it was great! There was no additional charge for the storage. The crew that moved me arrived a few minutes early, which was nice! I would recommend Homeland Movers to anyone who would like to eliminate the most stressful part of their re-locating / moving experience. These guys are great, extremely professional !! Glad that I chose to give them my business. Thank you to the staff and crew at Homeland for truly making this experience enjoyable instead of stressful!!

First time hiring movers and I had no idea there was a true science to moving furniture. Some of my bigger pieces were purchased by me and built in my home, and the logic these movers displayed to move several of these items with no damage or scratched surfaces amazed me. They are professionals who communicated with each other throughout the move and I never seen such a great display of teamwork. I'm for sure a satisfied customer and you will be too if you hire 7 Day Movers 👍.

Mike goes above and beyond for all of his customers! First of all, I called him extremely last minute -- the day before I needed to move a heavy couch. He drove a far distance and arrived promptly, and even though his partner could no longer help him, he still showed up because he was a self-proclaimed "man of his word." Now, at this point, I questioned whether or not he could do this by himself. One large, three-piece couch, lamps, dressers, a pull-out sofa bed? He moved it all with a smile on his face. More impressive than his positive, happy attitude is his determination! This move was a STRUGGLE. What was supposed to take an hour or two turned into three or four. On the way from Point A to Point B of moving, we lost communication because his phone died and then had no GPS. I waited at Point B wondering, a little worried because he had a truck with all my things and I had no way to call him, but Mike was such a trooper. He stopped by a gas station to buy a charger, booted up his phone, called me, and made it to my new home. What an amazing, trustworthy guy! But then it got even more challenging. My couch could NOT fit through the door! Rather than give up and call it quits, Mike found tools in his car, took the legs off, and even unhinged my door in the worst game of Tetris and puzzles ever to MAKE SURE my couch made it into my home. Again -- all by himself. (Because I am under five feet tall and was pretty much useless, haha!) He even gave me interior design advice on how to best arrange the couch! He is truly a hard worker and has EXEMPLARY customer service. Highly, HIGHLY recommend Mike for all your moves. I've passed him number along a few times since then! Thank you SOOOO much again, Mike! And thanks for advance for mowing my lawn, too! (That's right, folks. He also has a lawn service! One-stop-shop for all of your needs!) You are truly the best! -Mae

The team was excellent. They adjusted to my needs even last minute time changes without a problem. They had a really good attitute, very professional, punctual and hard working. They made our moving process really easy and took out of our minds the stress of this process since the moment they went to our house to provide the quote I am glad we found them. They were really helpfull and willing to help all the time. Thank you guys.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
