Mr. Raffaele Puleo did a great job for my place. He replaced my old toilet, connected my washer and dryer, installed some ceiling lights for me, and even went out of his way to patch up my jumpy laminate floor, in a timely manner. His rate is very reasonable and his work ethics are superior. He came with a ready attitude to work and he is very punctual. He is committed to solving my household problems and never complains while working in uncomfortable spaces. Mr. Puleo is very honest. He never uses gimmicks to try to make more money out of you and always looks for the fastest and most inexpensive solution for you. He understands, listens, and doesn't take advantage of my innocence about handyman and construction services. He will be my choice if I have needs with regard to my place in the future. I would definitely recommend him to my friends and family who seek handyman services.

Edward did a great job for me. He was very timely in his initial response and quoted a fair price that he adhered to. He showed up on time with all materials (I hate it when contractors ask you to buy materials) and did a very clean and thorough job. Would definitely use in the future as it's very difficult to find reliable contractors in S Florida.

Marcelo was so easy to work with and he and his crew were very professional besides being top notch painters. I had quotes from several other companies which were all typically more than I Paint USA but choosing to work directly with the contractor himself rather than a big company sales rep was the right decision. Now my neighbors are jealous and my house looks great! Thank you Marcelo.

I don't know what we would've done without Fabian and his team! My fiancé and I were in desperate need of a good paint job fast and we were on a tight budget. This was also my first time hiring a contractor for a project, so I was a little nervous. When I spoke to Fabian, I knew I was in good hands. He promised me he could start the job the next day (in the middle of the week) and would complete it in three days with his team! The job was to paint our entire 950 square foot condo with knockdown on all the walls, all the trimmings (base boards and crown molding), all the closets and doors. I am so happy and relieved we hired T&F Painting to do the job and make our new house finally feel like home. You will not regret hiring them. I can't wait to keep referring T&F to all my family and friends! Thanks again Fabian!

I used JS Construction for a small job - to remove and later replace some accordion shutters. They were easy to contact, quoted a reasonable price, and were very prompt. Considering the small size of the job, they treated it with as much respect and attention as if I was doing a major project. I will definitely consider them for future projects and will refer them to my friends.

On the first day, Manuel showed up on time, in Brickell, during rush hour on one day's notice--that alone tells you everything you need to know about his character. He has vast knowledge, and pointed out a few important details that previous contractors were unaware of. He was able to refer us to a very reputable architect and get the job done on time and under budget. We originally had a large 2-bedroom, and now we have a still spacious 2 bedroom + office that is crafted to perfection. We will be using him for a kitchen renovation in a few months. Thank you Manuel!!

It is my pleasure to write this unsolicited letter of recommendation for Brisk Brothers Construction!! While major remodeling is inherently stressful for almost any homeowner, Brisk Brothers service as a general contractor were invaluable, and I am extremely pleased with the final result. Specifically, I would give this crew top marks in the following areas: 1. Quality of work performed. The quality of work done was consistently top notch. used subcontractors who were knowledgeable, skilled, and competent in their respective trades. They were conscientious about following project specifications, and their work product rarely needed improvement or revision. 2. Quality of work crews. workmen whom were utilized were professional, reliable, courteous, and respectful of my property and privacy. They had an old school work ethic (often 10-hour days, some Saturdays), good work habits, strong safety orientation, and emphasized getting the job done right rather than doing it fast. Their pride in their work was evident. They tidied up at the end of each workday. I also found them to be trustworthy, and I felt comfortable with allowing them access inside our home. 3. Project management and coordination. Brisk brothers prior experience working in construction really paid off. They were knowledgeable about all aspects of our project, and were able to plan, coordinate and manage the activities of different work crews effectively. they remained closely involved in overseeing the project from start to finish. Their excellent attention to detail, strong organizational skills and commitment to follow-through are assets which enabled him to juggle the extensive details involved in our project without missing a beat. Their familiarity with building codes facilitated a smooth and hassle-free process when it came to building permits and inspection. I would recommend Brisk Brothers for any one to use. Next project we have I will be calling him back.

We have worked with DAW Builders since the early 2017 for our office renovation project. Starting our project wasn't easy, dealing with permits and drawings, adjusting to new building regulations and managing vendors could have been an exhausting journey, but DAW Builders was always there helping us to reach the finish line. Their commitment to a job is impeccable and all around flawless. We have worked with different contractors in the past; finding reliable contractors and/or vendors has always been a concern, but DAW Builders is definitively the best general contractor we've worked with. Jose and Blanca make an excellent team and their communication and attention to detail exceeded our expectations. We can certainly recommend DAW Builders for your next project, hands down!

We hired Carlos and Alex to prepare our design build project, and they did an excetional job preparing the plans and budget for our project. Throughout the duration of the project they were very attentive to all of our needs. They were able to eliminate all changes due to their ability and revise the plans as needed in order to meet our budget goals. They recently completed the construction and we are very pleased with our results. I definitely recommend them. Not only were they professional but a pleasure to work with.

I represent a condominium association and interviewed four contractors for major repairs to our roof. We went with Spartan Roofing and Construction and received a first class job and excellent value for money spent. The lead contractor on this job was Ignacio Escardon and he could not have been more professional, helpful, or conscientious. He was on site managing and working with trained workers during the entire job. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for quality roofing, or any construction project. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
