Patrick is a patient teacher and he instinctively understood what I needed to learn and how. I've only had 2 conversations with him but already feel confident that he'll be able to see my through my language learning journey. He's very responsive and engaged throughout the lesson, and encourages and corrects gently as we go along. I would highly recommend his french language lessons!

I have been taking French language lessons from Eric for a few weeks now. One of my life-long desires has been to learn to speak French fluently. I feel very lucky to have found Eric to help me reach this goal!!! We meet once a week for 1 and a half hours. During our lessons, I can expect to learn something new, but also Eric reviews with me material from recent lessons where I'm a bit weak. Eric is very adept at teaching in a manner that is thorough and easy to understand. The fact that he is a native French speaker is a huge plus because I am learning to speak with the correct accent already! I know that I won't need to learn that later. For me, this serves as a big confidence booster! I know that once I become fluent, my French accent will already be there. Another plus of learning French with Eric, is that his accent forces me to ''listen'' more attentively, which goes a long way in my learning to understand spoken French. I believe that Eric is the perfect tutor for learning to speak French!

Ivette did a great job of understanding where my level was and then used her education background to come up with an engaging lesson plan tailored for my needs. Even after a few lessons, I could tell that my Spanish was improving. I can't thank her enough for being flexible and always willing to help. I would definitely recommend Ivette if you are looking for a knowledgeable, understanding, kind, and challenging mentor!

Jose is a very skilled and patient teacher that puts great effort into practicing the Spanish language with his students. Not only did we learn a lot of vocabulary, but also grammar, reading, translating and especially speaking the Spanish language. Although we are not fluent in Spanish yet, we are definitely getting there soon. We are glad to have Jose help us improving our language skills.

I was looking for someone close by that would be willing to teach Spanish lessons in a face-to-face setting. Jeannette provides me with Spanish lessons 3 times a week at my house. She is punctual and organized. Jeannette will assign homework if you want and is helpful at clarifying any questions you may have. I have recommended Jeanette to several people I know personally and would recommend her to anyone here on this site. I know she also does lessons online if you're so inclined.

¡Jose es incredible! I've worked with him now since December 2016 (almost 3 months) and I've gained the confidence to go to Spanish language meet ups as well as see improvement in being able to understand more music & conversations throughout the week. Jose is patient, professional, very smart, and super fun to work with. He's also always on time and his lessons are well thought out and make me feel like I'm making progress each meeting. I highly recommend Jose to everyone I talk to (just about everyday) and feel very fortunate to have found him on Thumbtack. Thanks for your stellar work Jose! Nos vemos miércoles 😃

We had the pleasure of having Paulina give some lessons to our teenage daughter during a short stay in South Florida. Paulina was always on time, very responsive, and a great teacher. Most importantly, her joviality made it a pleasure to work with her, both for parents and daughter!

Aleyda is a really professional and dedicated teacher. She is always prepared for the lessons and attentive to details. Since I've started taking my lessons with her I feel I have made big progress. I also really appreciate her paying close attention to the errors I make during the lessons so she could bring the material to work on my weak areas next time. Her skills as a teacher are exceptional. Would highly recommend taking lessons with her.

I took Doctor Aparicio's 10 hour online course to help with my Spanish at work. I have to say she is an authentic teacher!!! I have never taken a course on line with a professor attending me a full hour and I have to say I learned more than I thought possible. I like that she customised all the lessons for me, according to my needs, and she made me work hard. She is very inspirational, fun, and a sweet and demanding professional. She teaches you not only to be fluent when speaking but also to learn about the culture in Latin America and Spain. She is very knowledgeable about art, history, linguistics, literature.... She is one of a kind. There are not may profs like her left. I put in practice what I learned with her since day 1 and I am thinking of hiring her to improve my Spanish. I want it for travelling and be able to communicate in Spanish at a higher lever.

Irene is spectacular as a teacher and tutor in all respects. She explains as she goes in a way that tengages the student so you learn the true essence of the language. We just moved to Miami and my daughter is required to know Spanish for school and Irene has taken her from zero understanding to knowing how to conjugate verbs and say sentences in 9 lessons. We are thrilled and will be using Irene throughout the year. She is an excellent Spanish tutor in high demand.

Patricia is a gifted teacher with a tremendous knowledge of language and language learning. After working together one on one for only 18 months, I can have a normal conversation with a native French speaker. That amazes me! In addition, Patricia is a lovely, kind person who knows how to make full use of your time and motivate you to do your best. She is upbeat and positive and always makes learning fun. Should you choose to work with Patricia, it will be one of the best things you have ever done for yourself.

My tutor..Evelyne is a wonderful instructor. She is warm and friendly...but above all she listens to why and how I want to learn French. She has customized our lessons to my needs. I have learned more in four lessons than I ever learned with group classes...on-line tutorials and all those expensive CD collections. Honestly. ..with Evelyne. ..I think I will actually be able to speak French...in France..to a native French speaking person. I'm very pleased with my choice.

Lily is an excellent teacher. She designs the lessons to your interests and to your level of fluency. For me, I wanted to concentrate mostly on conversational skills as well as grammar and she gives a perfect mix of both. She is very patient and makes me feel comfortable even as I fumble through my broken French. I really feel that my French will improve greatly with Lily.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
