Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

What is a dog boot camp?

A dog boot camp is basically a board and train program that focuses on training your dog or puppy. The trainers will work with your dog to curb unwanted behavior, teach them basic skills and show them how to walk on a leash.

Dog boot camps and training programs might differ when it comes to their services, so it’s always a good idea to do your research and ask them to explain exactly what they offer — and how much they charge.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behave as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

What can I say about Nathaniel. He is the best dog trainer around. Just after first class we saw a big difference in the behavior of our 17 month old Pitbull. Nathaniel is very knowledgeable and understands dogs psychology very well. He not only trained our dog but he trained us as well. He corrected the way we were dealing with our dag before and we saw a big difference. I would definitely recommend Nathaniel as a dog trainer. Its never too late to train a dog 🐕.

Gerard is deff the canine whisper in south Florida. I was really skeptical at first to allow a dog trainer in my home due to Covid however after speaking to a lot of other pet parents at the dog park I realized that a trend appeared when you compare in house training vs boarding your pet. I can definitely confirm that Gerard follows the CDC guidelines & made me feel comfortable and confident to walk my Great Dane around the block. He educating me on how to properly be a leader for my dog. I recommend in house training with Gerard highly since he teaches you and your dog to co live harmoniously vs sending your dog to a boarding and seeing the results of the training diminish over time. Thank you Gerard, best wishes.

I was looking for a trainer that didn't just teach commands but worked with behavioral issues as well and Cliff provided that. He also wasn't just training my dog but myself included and it was a great learning experience.

Wow! What a great experience we are having with Nathaniel/Silver Dog training! Our 2 year old Pomeranian was becoming quite a little terror, he was snapping and biting and humping and it seemed we had completely and desperately lost control of him. Thanks to Nathaniel, his training plan has been so successful, we are so relieved and so happy. Words cannot even begin to express our gratitude. Nathaniel is so patient and kind and it is no wonder his systematic approach truly works! Thanks again Nathaniel and Silver Dog Training, we are forever grateful and so happy to be part of the Silver Dog Training family!

We contacted K9 Pack Dog Training after we rescued our 7 month old Belgian Malinois. When we met with Ore, he was very experienced with the issues that Uzi was displaying. We decided to leave him for a Board and Train for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks with Ore and his team, Uzi came back knowing his name, basic commands and with the strong confidence he lacked after not being socialized with people or other pets in his previous environment. It was critical for us to make sure that Uzi was socialized and K9 Pack Dog Training knew how to address our issues immediately. Although it will take continued one on one training with Uzi, as a pet owner, I am confident Uzi now has the strong foundation to improve and become an even better pet thanks to K9 Pack Dog Training.

Nathaniel has been a trainer easy to work with. He has begun training our puppy and has trained us humans to understand a dog’s way of thinking and how to train him, specially to be consistent & patient with commands and practicing what has been taught! We already are seeing progress and know that down the road will have a well behaved ( he is intelligent) and great dog!

Upon contacting and speaking with Dylan he scheduled our consultation quickly and I signed a contract with him that day. He’s very professional and it’s obvious the love he has for dogs as well as their families. My son is currently in an emotional support dog training program with Dylan. After speaking with Dylan and expressing the concerns and needs I have for my son he was so supportive and highly recommended getting my son a support dog. The time my son is spending with Dylan and his dog has already made a big difference in my sons life. He looks forward to going and being with Dylan and his dog. I highly recommend Dylan to anyone looking for a professional trainer as well as a dedicated caring person. I am confident that because of Dylan and his amazing training program along with his genuine care for people that my son will be in a better place in life when he finishes.

Fantastic trainer. He trained me on how to train my dog and that made all the difference. He made sure I understood the psychology of what we were doing. Why it was important to do the exercises we were doing. Very good material. Excellent sessions. Leeloo picked up the material quickly and I believe that was because of the techniques that he thought me.

Full Potential K9 has given us the tools to teach and learn as a family with out new German Shepard. I am comfortable and confident that we will have a successful, happy new BIG dog in our family. I would recommend Dillon 100%

I just finished my first session with Nathaniel at my home. My dog was responding immediately to him and I have been practicing with her since he left. First impression from today is that he is very knowledgeable and I can tell he is passionate about training the dogs. He gave me a bunch of pointers to practice on our dog and I’m really excited for our next sessions as she is responding to my commands almost instantly.

We came to Aninanny because we'd been concerned about the aggressive/reactive behaviors of a dog we had just adopted. We didn't think there was any hope for our new pet, but within just a couple of sessions, our dog was thriving. She gained confidence and skills we never thought possible. We are indebted to this company and the amazing trainers!

Cliff truly changed my life because now my dog does not pull on the leash and does not jump at guests when they come over. It has only been 2 days since our first session and I have seen a dramatic change in my lab. I highly recommend him! He definitely is worth the money! Great dog trainer!!!

After extensively searching for the right dog trainer, i came across Jane. She did everything that a trainer should do. A free consultation, a list of things to touch on, and puzzles along with toys for my boy, Bolt. Bolt was extremely responsive to Janes strategies and i am very grateful for this session. I hope to see the results grow even more by the end of the month.

I have a 7 month old Boston Terrier that has become one with somewhat of a bad reputation in our apartment complex. We live on a very busy corner and Bandit will bark and lunge at anything or anyone that moves outside. Today we had our first training session and I am completely surprised at the transformation in just one lesson. So much so, that several of our neighbors were talking about how different he was, and even asked for business cards for their dogs. I will continue working with Bandit on what he learned today, but I am very optimistic that he will become a very well behaved boy. We already have another session scheduled with Nathaniel at Silver Dog Training.

During quarantine I was afraid my 3 month old German shepherd pup was not going to get the socialization needed at that age, she was already showing signs of fear towards other dogs, and as she get older that could probably turn into aggression. I consulted with Anninanny and they walk me through their process and recommendations. My pup stayed with them for 2 week and the results were nothing sort of miraculous, she gained confidence to approach other dogs, albeit with a bit of hesitation, but she was more curious than scared. While they had her for two week they also trained her some basic commands, which I’m still reinforcing and home. Also they are very communicative and they would send me videos almost every day. I really enjoyed seeing their process. I highly recommend them and will be soliciting their services again for further training and day care.

Brianna did an initial evaluation of our 5 month old corgi, Obi. She is very knowledgeable and observant. She asked a lot of questions and really took her time with listening to our concerns and what we ultimately are looking for. She explained that a “one size fits all” approach to dog training doesn’t work.....it’s very individualistic. We look forward to working with her in the future!
