Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

From the start Donna was so much fun to work with. She made it easy to schedule lessons & was very patience with us. She's the dance instructor you want for your weeding! Our first dance "That's Amore" by Dean Martin was fantastic because of her! Thank you for everything Donna :)

We had such a great experience and she gave us the confidence we needed to hit the dance floor and show off our new moves! She can keep your lessons well structured and knows what will work for your big day and what you should avoid! She helped make our dancing unforgettable.

Our wedding is next weekend and we have taken 10 lessons. Within those 10 lessons we have came a long ways. My fiance has no rhythm at all. But with practice practice he knows this song the steps forward and backwards and backwards and forwards. I can't wait until next weekend to do our performance for our wedding and they're on this will be such a rememberable moment for the both of us. Every time we hear this song we can get up and just dance.

I will start off by saying both Brittany and her husband Will are very nice people, personally. Professionally, what a nightmare. I scheduled sessions with Brittany for 11:30 am on Saturday’s, I bought a package for 4 classes. Unfortunately, I had to remind Brittany of the session the day of and she did not make it to the appointment until 6:40 pm. This was our first session experience and the experience that kept repeating itself. My fiancé and I are planning a wedding, running a business and tending to a terminally ill family member so we do not have a lot of wiggle room in our schedule, however this is something we wanted to do for us, so we did. For the second session scheduled at 11:30 am, Brittany was a no show again, and showed up to the session at 6:30 pm this time. She claimed her husband’s kid was sick with a stomach ache, when they came over it came out the kid never had a stomach ache in the morning. That night after they left, my fiancé’s ring went missing from my house. No one was in our house but them and their kids. It was a silicone band ring so we didn’t make a fuss, but it sure is strange that it went missing that night. The third session we booked for Friday night at 6:30 pm. When I text Brittany to confirm she told me her husband had a modeling job and she couldn’t make it 2 hours before the session. She wanted to make it up the next morning. At this point my fiancé and I are frustrated with their lack of professionalism but want to have our dance lessons. The final straw was her canceling the session she rescheduled 2 minutes before she was suppose to arrive. Not only have we cancelled meetings for work, meetings with the caters for our wedding, we had also had to not attend family gatherings because the lack of professionalism demonstrated. It’s as if the world revolved around their schedule and nothing else mattered not even their word. DO NOT BOOK UNLESS YOU ARE FLEXIBLE TO RESCHEDULE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
