Barbara S. says, "I couldn't be more pleased with the job done. There I was... sitting on a chair in an empty house with roaches (recent property purchase) when I decided to reach out to Best Choice Pest Services. Leo contacted me as quick as a flash, and dropped by in a matter of hours to perform his initial treatment. Sure enough, 3 weeks later, it seems like whatever he did worked. And he didn't use harmful, toxic materials which was a huge relief since I had children and pets coming into the property within a matter of days. I'm so glad I found this company. Easy, professional, effective, and reasonably-priced! Thanks, Leo! See you at the end of August for the next session."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an exterminator during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask exterminators in your area if they would be willing to offer a consultation over a phone call or video chat. You can then ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. Make sure to ask what precautions they are taking to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether they are observing social distancing guidelines. You may ask them if it's possible to conduct the appointment virtually or without person-to-person contact.

How can I find out if an exterminator is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Essential service providers during the COVID-19 crisis are defined by individual states, cities and localities. For the most accurate information, visit your official state or city government website to see what is considered an essential service.

CISA is the government agency that defines critical workers on a national level, so you can check its website for more information. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for pest control services?

You may be able to use digital payments such as Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash or Zelle to pay for extermination services. Many businesses accept methods of payment besides cash and credit cards. Check with pest control services in your area to see if they have changed their payment methods as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an exterminator when social distancing?

If you need pest extermination services inside your home, talk to the exterminator first to be sure that you both feel comfortable completing the project. Also, follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing. You can also arrange with the exterminator to take extra steps to stay safe, such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying at least 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing any common spaces before and after the project is complete.

Do exterminators offer remote or virtual services?

Typically, extermination takes place at your home or place of business, but you can ask if the business is offering special accommodations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across a profile that states the exterminator is offering remote services, ask what those services include. But if the job has to be done in person, be sure to follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing or see if you can postpone your appointment.

Does an exterminator need to enter my home?

If you have an outdoor pest infestation, it’s unlikely an exterminator will need to enter your home. But if your pest infestation is inside your home, the exterminator will likely need to enter your home. Check with the exterminator beforehand to explain the extent of the problem, the layout of your house and see if they can complete the job outdoors. You can also ask the exterminator to video chat or set up a phone call to exchange as much information as possible before you begin the project.

What are the signs of pests in your home?

Signs of pest infestations vary by the type of pest. Here are a few signs to watch out for when it comes to some of the most common pests:

  • Ants: Stray ants walking around or large numbers congregating, wood shavings, ants emerging from hidden crevices, ant nests
  • Rats or mice: Droppings, chewed objects and wires, scampering noises, holes in walls and floors
  • Cockroaches: Cylindrical droppings, brown smear marks, live cockroaches
  • Fleas: Small and dark spots on your pet’s skin, your pet starts scratching excessively, pepper-like “flea dirt” in bedding, carpet or furniture
  • Bed bugs: Droppings in the seams of your mattress, rusty/reddish stains on bed sheets, bites on your skin
  • Termites: Mud tubes, wood-scented droppings, small holes in walls, peeling or bubbling paint, wood damage
  • Bees or wasps: Excessive number of bees and wasps, dark patches on the walls or ceilings, and papery nests or hives under roof eaves, behind shutters, on balconies or in garden sheds

If you notice any of these signs in your house, contact the best exterminators near you

How often should pest control be done?

This depends on several factors, including:

  • The type of pest
  • The severity of the invasion
  • Your home’s characteristics
  • The quality of the pest control company’s work

In some cases, you might require pest control services three to four times a year. Or, you might need services monthly or every few months.

Talk to the best exterminators near you to get an idea of what type of service you need — and how many times you’ll need follow-up treatments.

How do you get rid of termites?

The best way to get rid of termites is to act fast. Termites are a problem that will only get worse — and no matter how much you want them to, they usually don’t magically move out on their own. There are three main types of termites: drywood, dampwood and subterranean. Drywood and dampwood termites sneak through cracks in your exterior paint, nail holes, and gaps near windows and other openings and begin to eat through your wood. Subterranean termites enter your house from the ground up by creating mud tunnels. In all cases, they survive by eating the wood of your house. The type of termites you have can steer the treatment plan.

Methods of termite extermination include fumigation, use of pesticides, and use of natural elements that are poisonous to the bugs. The extent of your termite infestation will help determine the treatment method. If you have drywood or dampwood termites that have infiltrated all aspects of the wood in your home, the pest control pro may recommend enclosing the whole house in a tent and gassing the termites via fumigation. If you have subterranean termites, often the entire footprint of the home must be treated by drilling liquid treatments into the slab or foundation of the home to exterminate the colonies. In any case, once you see signs of termites, it’s time to take action and call a pest pro.

How much does it cost to get rid of cockroaches?

Cockroaches are not only ugly, they are difficult to get rid of. Quick and resilient, they can be hard to get rid of without professional help once they have inhabited a house. Nationally, the average range for cockroach pest control cost is $80-$130. Extermination professionals typically provide a free estimate to determine the extent of the infestation. They’ll check for the main sources of the bugs, identify bug access and entry points into your home, and determine the best method for elimination. There are a variety of cockroach extermination tools including gel baits and traps, pesticide foggers, desiccants (which dry out the cockroaches), neurotoxins, and other pesticides. Pest control costs can also cover preventive measures like regular spraying and trap maintenance. Some regions of the country are much more prone to cockroach problems than others, so pest control costs may need to be part of your quarterly budget. Cockroaches love dark, humid, and warm areas and water sources, so place traps near your washer and dryer and under your sinks.

Tyler was extremely knowledgeable, professional and thorough. He took the time to listen to our concerns and discussed the best options of what needed to be done. With all the options out there for exterminators...we feel very confident in having selected Tyler as ours. We definitely, with highest regards, recommend him.

Jonathan was great, communicated all information to me ahead of time and didn't pressure me at all regarding a quick decision. This was the very opposite experience I had with another well known extermination provider. The annual fee is slightly higher than others but the upfront cost was SO MUCH LOWER and the service is top notch so I don't mind. Another great find on Thumbtack!

I originally gave them a 5 star review. They were very responsive when I reached out and showed up on time for the job. They were professional and nice when they were here and that's what I based my review on. However a month later and it seems as though the problem we were having has gotten worse. Prior to their visit we would see 1 or 2 roaches a month. With our previous exterminator we wouldn't see any roaches for months after his visit and we would have him come every 3 months (he has since retired, thus the need for a new exterminator). Since Kurt's visit however, there has been more roaches than before. In the past week we've seen/killed at least 6 roaches. I don't want to take away from their professionalism, however the quality and effectiveness of the job they did leave much to be desired.

Thank you kurt for sending ron, he was very pleasant and professional, he also explained to me what his spray did to the spiders and ants in my house. He also explained that its normal for bugs to appear after an extermination, but reassured me that the spiders will eventually die and i hope so soon! If i see less ants and spiders in the next week, will definitely rehire you guys in the future, thank you both!!

Eddie the owner is responsive, professional and took a lot of time explaining different solutions to me. Guaranteed their work, and we’re punctual and receptive. They Went the extra mile to work around my work schedule. Very impressed with the attentiveness and professionalism! Matt the service tech was polite, kind and punctual. I would highly recommend Hero Pest control. I hired them for a problem by exterminator wasn’t eliminating and I will probably switch to them on a regular basis.

Gregory’s Pest Control was such a great experience. First off, they responded quickly to my message and setup was really quick and easy. I spoke directly with the owners son Paul, and he was very knowledgeable. The service reps were also wonderful and very pleasant. Next, I met with the exterminator, Jeff, who was a very professional and nice person. He was also very knowledgeable and explained all the projects that he had to do with my new home. I am very satisfied with Gregory’s pest control and plan to use them on a bi-monthly basis. They definitely deserve 5 stars! Great company

I only have one thing to say & that is " outstanding" in every sense of the word! I did not know how bad of a rat infestation I had in my upper attic until mike & Craig came to my rescue! It seems I had a family of rats, that made their home my upper attic! Mike, who came more than once insured me not to worry & that he promised, that he would get rid of my rat infestation, which he did after a week! He made more than one visit & removed some floor insulation , which was infected with rat urine & poop that caused an awful odor, even after exterminating & eliminating the rodents! Once he was sure their were no more, he sealed and closed up all the vents with a commercial grade of wire! As of today, I have very little odor remaining of the rodents & best of all, I have a 5yr warranty knowing I have peace of mind! I would highly, recommend this company all of my neighbors & friends in the South Florida" I want to say mike's knowledge was unbelievable, but most of all he was very understanding & explained in detail the steps that he was going to take to eliminate the problem! I was vey fortunate in finding such a reliable & trust worthy company! Thanks again to mike/Craig ! Don CAPPIELLO DAVIE !
