What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I am a bake-to-order baker and not only provide custom cakes, but also traditional ones as well as bake cookies and pastries, specializing in Italian baked goods. My basic cake prices start at less than $2.00 a serving. More detailed information about my pricing can be found on my website, annabellescookiesandmore.com.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
They provide me with pictures and/or ideas of what it is they are wanting so that I can get a feel for the design they want. We talk about flavor combinations and then they generally, will schedule a cake tasting so they can decide which flavors they want. At that time we review design, finalizing details and I am then able to provide them with an exact quote.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am mostly self-taught, although more recently, I have taken some informal classes and workshops to hone my decorating skills.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
As a small child, I would watch my mother and grandmother bake delectable treats. My mother was a cake decorator and often, I would help her decorate cakes. I made my first wedding cake for a friend more than 25 years ago and throughout the years made cakes for family and friends. Six years ago, I turned this little hobby of mine into a real business and have enjoyed helping people turn their visions into edible realities!
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of customers. Tall, short, young, old. Not sure how to really answer this question! :)
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Recently, I was challenged by having to make fire helmet cake for a client. It took me several hours to bake, carve, and decorate the cake. It is a chocolate cake, with a raspberry filling, chocolate ganache and fondant icing, and is life-sized. It can be viewed in my portfolio.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
That it takes a lot of time and skill to bake and decorate a cake and/or a cookie. That custom designs no matter if you are talking about a car, furniture, clothing or a baked treat, calls for higher prices because of the time involved in creating them. Be careful hiring the "cheapest" baker, it could end up ruining your special day! Read reviews, look at their portfolios, go on their FB profiles and see what is said about them there. Taste their cake before you hire. Lastly, remember it is not simply "cake," and what may look simple, probably took hours to make!
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
How many flavors do I get? Do you charge anything extra for cake stands, boards, ribbons, etc. Do you deliver and if so, what is your delivery charge?
