I am the owner of a very energetic Black Labrador. I knew that I had a dog with high energy and needed professional help with training my puppy. I found Martha Bernal through a friend at work who was happy with her dog training. Martha guided my puppy through ten sessions of puppy training (basic puppy obedience). I was very pleased with her obvious love of dogs and immediate results with each lesson. Martha has a gentle, effective approach to training dogs and my dog responded very well to her training sessions. The end result for me was that my Labrador became a lot more easy to manage because he understood the commands (requests) that I made such as "Come" "Sit" "Stay" "Leave it" and he also stopped jumping up on people. I enjoyed seeing my dog learn and am very happy with the dog training that Martha provided to my dog. He remembers everything she taught him and it makes our family happy to have a well trained big dog. I would recommend her highly to anyone considering a dog trainer.

Christine is awesome! She did a great job helping us train our 10 week old Brittany Spaniel puppy, Lola. She listened to what we wanted to work on each week and incorporated it into our training session. Rather than training your dog for you, Christine teaches you what to do so your dog will listen and follow your directions. She uses positive reinforcement so your dog is always happy. Lola is our pet but also a hunting dog every now and then. So, Christine learned how to train her for hunting purposes. She is incredibly knowledgeable and made the training sessions easy to understand, fun and enjoyable for Lola and us. She also followed up with additional information and tips after each session. Christine has also helped us during the day by coming over and taking Lola for walks. We always get cute pictures and an update when she leaves on how the walk went. I would highly recommend Christine to anyone looking for training, walking or sitting. We love Christine and so does Lola!

Sue was great to work with and immediately put our minds at ease from the first phone call. We are currently vacationing in the Bradenton area for the month of January and required a dog sitter during a day trip to Miami. Sue responded to our request on Thumbtack and the rest is history. She took great care of our Miniature Schnauzer while we were away for the day. He was walked, fed and given lots of love and attention. The photos and texts with updates was reassuring and a real bonus. We would highly recommend Sue and would definitely reach out to her again if we need a dog sitter in the future.

I am new to Tampa and was looking for someone to take care of my dog while on a trip. He has never been boarded so I was looking for an in home sitter. I can not say enough positive things about Laurie. I had a very positive experience. She is very nice and treated my dog like he was part of her family. She also sent many photo updates to keep my mind at ease and I could tell he had a great time with the other dogs because he was exhausted when I brought him home. I would definitely recommend Laurie and I will be using her again.

It has been a wonderful experience. Shana comes to my home and works with my dog and then I work with him. She is very calm, doesn't raise her voice and he loves her and responds to her commands. I have the idea now and and so does my puppy. I am not finished yet but Sebastian is such a good boy now. I would definitely recommend Dog Rules.

With five dogs in our house, it took us a long time to decide on a mobile pet care company who could truly listen and mold themselves to our situation. Other companies would try to 'take charge' and tell us how they will only work. Bruce listened to what we wanted and needed and gave us just that. In the end, there are many passionate pet care companies but they aren't thorough. With Bruce, he got the job and kept us up with his truly amazing text messages about our animals and how excited he was to be working with us to care for our dogs. That's the key, "working with us", not so much for us. Bruce makes you feel like he's a friend, and after he was done with our sessions for the week, my wife and I spoke in great detail about that. In the end, you can leave your animal with anyone... I won't. I'm not an easy sell. I trust very few people with my dogs, I'm one of those dog people with no kids... (by choice). What matters in the end is TRUST. Period. You will get that with Bruce... and some really great, in-depth text updates! haha... believe it or not, when you're hundreds of miles away, it helps you sleep by putting a smile on your face, and an ease to your worry. Thanks Groovy Dogs!

Our dog has severe fear aggression, he will attack anything that is strange to him including people and other dogs. We tried PetCo and another trainer and had no luck. Von Asgard helped our dog. It took a lot of hard work and time but he is much more controlled and confident. He still has much work ahead of him, but the improvement is promising. The location is outdoor cages with indoors at night. When we dropped our dog off at first, I was very skeptical and concerned that it wasn't going to help. I am proud to say they were wonderful, did what they promised, and kept us up to date on his progress.

Lane has a true understanding of dogs. I Met lane walking around downtown Dunedin when my GSD (German Shepherd dog) was about 4 months old(about a year ago). We spoke of a mutual love for the breed and how both of our grandparents were involved in K9 training (my grandfather was a k9 judge). Lane never pushed a service our a sales pitch on me he asked me some questions about my GSD. I let him know I was working with a trainer but at times my puppy seemed to rule us. He then told me he moved to the area and is training dogs here and if i ever needed help to call him (His expertise includes guard dogs, behaviors, advance training). During the past year we still were working with the original trainer who was very good as well. Something was missing though and we both felt that we taught my GSD everything we could but, he had a hurdle. You see my GSD would see other dogs and become over stimulated and hard to control and this started at about 7 months old ( He is a very intelligent and high drive GSD who's a sweetheart but stubborn.). He would jump on everybody not listen and tend to be just a brat. With dogs though he would bark aggressively and scare other people even though he just wanted to play he also seemed to be scared of them. So my trainer said let's take some time off and figure out something later. My wife and I talked about how he just needed to age and mellow but I felt this could not wait. I also mentioned how we met Lane and we should call him, but we were feeling a little discouraged and felt it may be better to wait. The next afternoon on the way to the beach I saw Lane walking two dogs and told my wife it's a sign let's just call him and try it. Lane gave us a free consultation that was over an hour. He then gave us his feedback and gave us pricing that was very competitive to any big box store but his is one on one. The difference with Lane though has been dramatic already, he truly has a passion and love for his career. After just a few weeks my GSD has improved with not only his old training but new training as well. My GSD is walking better on leash, reacting less and learning to be a companion and not pushing to be an alpha. Lanes knowledge of reading a dog has been honed since a young age and it shows. My GSD not only loves to go to training but now acts as if Lane is part of the family. My GSD is calmer and now looks for me to command him. We are not perfect by any means (its only been 4 weeks) but I truly believe with Carters k9s my GSD will be perfect and a dog that my grandfather would adore. Ask about the tree stump!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
