Mowses Home Services is so much more than I could have ever hoped for in overall home improvement needs. Daniel is so professional and comes to listen to your needs and then gives you a well thought out written estimate of everything that you would like to have done. My list was long. My house needed power washing, my shubs, roses and trees needed trimming. I also had some outdoor faucets that were in need of repair. My shutters either needed replaced or repainted and he was able to repaint and save me money. I still have some painting to do and a french drain to put in. Daniel is top notch at what he does whether it is yard cleanup, power washing, painting, shrub trimming, plumbing - they do it with pride and you come home to a neat and clean jobs site that extra effort has been given to. My patio and carport were blown out with blower and with the power washing look like new! This is a family owned and operated business and I would recommend them to anyone. Daniel also works in heating and air and electrical issues. I haven't needed that work yet but when I do I have someone to count on. Daniel has incredible work ethic and customer service skills. I am thankful and blessed to have met him and would be extremely happy to encourage you to call him and schedule a time to meet for an estimate. He will work with you on scheduling the work. You will be happy to get your estimate from Daniel. Debra Neal

We initially contacted them to install a water heater, but I was so impressed by them that I hired them to paint the interior of our home. My husband and I are both disabled veterans and started to paint our home but quickly realized it was too big of a job for us to complete. They were able to come in and pick up where we left off and fix the areas that we got sloppy on. Initially we were given an estimate of 3 days and the guy just left (on first day) and most of it is complete! He said he would come back first thing in the morning and complete it. I usually wait until the end of a job to complete a review but I am just so impressed by this company that I just had to write the review right away. They are very nice, clean, prompt, and professional. I am definitely going to keep their number programmed in my phone! I highly recommend them!

My air conditioner was only blowing warm air. I reached out through Thumbtack and received a response almost immediately and they were there within an hour to diagnose the problem. Four hours later the air conditioner was running great! Alex AC did everything they said they would do at a reasonable price and now I'm cool again.

I can't praise this company enough. They were on time, polite, friendly, and went above and beyond what any other company would of done for me. What they at first thought would be a half hour job, turned into a half day job due to my air conditioning unit needing more work than we thought at first. But that didn't matter to them, they worked until it was done. Not only that, but they found a way for me to afford additional parts and really cared for my needs. I have never had a company come in and show real feelings for the customer instead of what they could make off a job. I will definitely recommend this company to anyone. they restored my faith in companies. No pressure on buying what I couldn't afford. they made this experience beyond satisfactory.

I contacted the company to replace the air ducts in my home. Chris showed up on time and was professional. The quote he gave me was lower than two other quotes I had received, but higher than the lowest quote. The company worked with me and we were able to compromise. The ducts were installed as scheduled and they left no mess. I would consider hiring them again.

Robert is hands down the best AC guy around. He educated me on what needed to be done and invited me into Satans Layer under my house, back to where he traced the problem. Wow!! He had me back up and running that same day and even brought out a window unit so my kids were comfortable while they worked. He even gave me an additional Military Discount!! Call Robert right now!! This guy is awesome!

We came home on Sunday evening and our air out leaving us with a very smothering place. That night was miserable so I researched that night and found Thumbtack which recommend two air conditioning companies. Early the next morning I started contacting both companies and both scheduled an appointment with Sun Air Service giving me the earliest time. Richard came out and access the problem and gave me a quote. Both were close in comparison price but Richards company saw our situation and made it happen. He located the part and his service guys came out within a hour and a half with the part worked in the hot atticas well as outside and got our air working. We were so thankful and grateful to all of them for we were finally able to get a good night sleep and enjoy the comfort of our home.

I called Calvary because my air conditioner was making loud noises. Clay cane right over within 30 minutes to look at it. Turns out it was a pretty simple fix. He even threw in a free air filter. He was very helpful with suggestions of how to care for the unit and never pressured me in to buying something that wasn’t in need of immediate repair. I saved his number in my phone and have his card handy in case I’m in need of his help again. I appreciate the quick and friendly service and the honesty. I’d highly recommend this company!! Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
