Bottom line: This guy knows what he's talking about and knows what he's doing. I thought my Walker Coon Hound was train- proof. Brian proved me wrong- my dog is getting more and more obedient after every session and he loves it. Clickr training with Brian works. I felt a wave of relief after the first session. Overall great 100 percent positive experience. Highly recommend.

I was looking for a trainer that didn't just teach commands but worked with behavioral issues as well and Cliff provided that. He also wasn't just training my dog but myself included and it was a great learning experience.

I had a great feeling about Franco the first time I talked to him. He came to us for the first time today and I am so excited. My dog is already responding and Franco is a true professional and knows his stuff. Looking forward to a long relationship with Franco training my Maggi.

Wendy is a peach! My "rescued dog" Hunter, a dachshund, is very skitish with people and other dogs, but from the moment Wendy walked into our home, Hunter received her as a friend! That in itself says a lot. After 6 weeks, we have now taken him, with Wendy's guidance, to the local dog park for the first time since we have had him, and maybe the first time in his life, and contrary to my worst fears, he was very well behaved, which I can only credit to Wendy's affectionate and patient dog (and people) training. I would highly recommend Puppy Dog Luv/Wendy Heller for training!

Jane is awesome ! She traveled from Palm Beach Gardens to me in Coral Springs. She gave up two hours on a Sunday to help with my two pitties who are 16 months old and needed some training! I already see results! I would not hesitate to recommend Jane to anyone who needs help with their four-legged child. Jane was early, professional, soft spoken and knew what she was doing. I love Jane!

Brianna did an initial evaluation of our 5 month old corgi, Obi. She is very knowledgeable and observant. She asked a lot of questions and really took her time with listening to our concerns and what we ultimately are looking for. She explained that a “one size fits all” approach to dog training doesn’t work.....it’s very individualistic. We look forward to working with her in the future!

Puppy Training for my 14 week old Siberian Husky was simple and easy with Carol. Her laid back, loving personality worked well with our home. It amazed me how fast she trained my puppy and the simple things she taught me that trained ME to be a better pet owner. I HIGHLY recommend Carol Harris!

Dogs and training are in Erinn's DNA and you will see that when you and your dog meet her. Our puppy Vizsla was more than we could handle. A bundle of well intentioned energy that needed some software rewrites. An athlete that needed coaching badly. Erinn is that coach. Our dog is hard wired to hunt and pursue anything that moves (lizards, leaves, balls) but gets in the zone. Erinn now helps us control the zone and all behavior. We didn't want to train that away, just channel it. Also other indoor vs outdoor behavior including proper house breaking. All the usual commands, plus where and how to sit, come, down, up, fetch. Drop it....all of the must have commands into the head of our stubborn puppy! It's clear Erinn loves doing this. The puppy also loves Erinn. Thats not to say she isn't serious, she is. But the manner is terrific as you'll see. She sends us videos of the progress which helps when you board your pup and miss her. She works with the owners to train them too if needed. Just terrific.

Jillian has been such a gift for us! When we rescued Laika and brought her home she was so gentle and so sweet in the beginning, but she was very stubborn and she quickly became very attached to us, which caused her to become possessive. We thought doing obedience classes with her would be enough, but it simply wasn't. The trauma she went through from being abandoned and having to survive on her own left her with anxiety that we weren't equipped to deal with. Her anxiety paired with her possessiveness led her to start having aggressive tendencies. We knew we needed help and started searching for a training program that fit our needs. The moment we met Jillian we immediately felt confident that we were in good hands. Laika felt comfortable with her from the beginning, which was important to us since we decided to do the boarding and training. Jillian was very informative and immediately saw the potential Laika had and took her in and treated her as though Laika was part of her family. Jillian sent us regular updates via text with pictures and videos, which was wonderful. I loved seeing the progress Laika made throughout the month. At the end of one month we got to visit Laika and we could see a remarkable difference. We decided to do a second month of boarding and training with Jillian and it was during this second month that Laika made leaps and bounds with her training as everything became reinforced. She became much more confident, calm, and learned to stop herself before exhibiting bad behavior. We had an easy transition bringing her home and she's been so good ever since. She listens really well, she loves to continue practicing her training, she aims to please us, and the greatest of all for us is we can now pick up our cats without Laika getting jealous, possessive, and aggressive. We had concerns about her behavior for when we have kids in the future and now we feel comfortable and confident that introducing a baby to our family down the road will be possible. We can't thank Jillian enough for the wonderful job she did with rehabilitating Laika. She helped Laika to heal from her past trauma and guided her to step into her true potential that she continues to grow into each day.

Yes Dog Training has been a God-send. Stuart is great with our dog, Molly, and knew just how to address some dominant behaviors we wanted to correct. He also came very last minute to take care of her when we went out of town for a couple of days. Molly loves him and we love that he is trustworthy and responsible.

I adopted a one year old Boston Terrier mix who is extremely energetic. I forgot what it was like to have a young dog. Needless to say, I hired Kelly and have been so impressed. First of all, she is extremely professional, enjoyable, no nonsense and always punctual. She has a common sense approach to dog training and the results have been great. I would recommend her to anyone, as she has only proven to provide more than I ever thought I could get.

Our experience with Cindy was amazing. We learned not only how to train our dog but how to train ourselves!! So many things we had no idea we were doing were actually interferring with our dog training! Our Moe went from having no idea how to follow any commands to being able to follow all the basic and not so basic commands. We always get comments while on walks as to how well behaved he is!! We have all come a long way thanks to Cindy at KK's K9. We highly reccomend this company ..... kathy & erwin (and moe!)

We have a 5 month old Goldendoodle that is a bundle of energy. Needed help with housebreaking, obedience, crating and leash walking. Marti assessed our dogs behavior and was confident she could work with her. We opted to send our dog with Marti for a 10 day boot camp and board her at her home. When our dog Harley came home Marti discussed all facets of her training and took the time to teach us hand commands and the proper cue technique to continue reinforcing what she has learned. Harley is 10 times more obedient, is a pleasure to walk, sits, stays and lays down on command. I highly recommend Marti for her knowledge and training skills. If you want a dog that you can be proud of give Marti a try you'll be glad you did!

Kaitlyn with Canine Concepts is the best! We brought our 7 month old black lab, Molly, to her looking for obedience training. Kaitlyn responded to our request within minutes and after our initial text on a Sat, meeting on Sun, we dropped off Molly for training on Monday. The process was super quick and we knew immediately she was the trainer for us. She is extremely knowledgable, friendly, and great with our dog. She had Molly for 3 weeks and sent us video updates all the time. She treated Molly like one of her own. When we got Molly back she went over everything we needed to do to continue the training at home, and even came to our house for another training session after we were home for a couple weeks. Molly is a much better, and obedient dog now. She will sit, stay, down, here, place, kennel, drop it, leave it, etc. She walks on a leash without pulling, and doesn't go crazy when people and dogs walk by. She also trained Molly with an e-collar so we can have her off leash at times. We are extremely happy with Molly's progress. Kaitlyn is also available anytime for us to ask her questions, and we also board Molly with Kaitlyn anytime we are away.

The entire experience was excellent. Our Lab Rasta is no longer pulling or jumping. Mike and Crystal were incredible, they provided daily feedback and videos. They also spent time with both my husband and myself on renforcing the training. We are ecstatic with the outcome and would highly recommend Canine Calypso. Rasta has already gone back for boarding while we went on a short trip, he loves it as well. Very happy with the entire experience.

Steven just left and I am really impressed. He is obviously very passionate about what he does and certainly understands my dog. He got to understand him very quickly and did lots of work from the moment he arrived. I have a lot to learn and look forward to working with him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
