Fred and his son provided a second opinion inspection on my mother's home A/C system. There are two units; one on the ground and one on the roof. The current HVAC company tech inspected the system recently and informed her that the system needed a complete cleaning, several repairs, a new wall thermostat and a new UV light bulb. The estimate was over $3200. Fred and his son spent nearly a hour inspecting the entire system. They reported that the system was working within factory specs and did not need to be cleaned or need the UV bulb replaced at this time. Their recommendation was to schedule a maintenance inspection in a year. The second opinion inspection was free. Fred Smith and his son were prompt, competent and honest. I have advised my mother to fire the current HVAC company and schedule her next HVAC maintenance with the Smith's A/C & Heating Company. I am beyond disgusted with her current HVAC company and all of the other incompetent, dishonest and predatory home service providers. Fred and his son are a rare find. I would give them 10 stars if that choice were available.

Chad, was distinctly professional, clearly knowledgeable, and, most important to me, HONEST!! In my personal experience within this industry, I can attest that this is a rarity. I prefer to do business with people who have integrity, so finding a sincere person in Chad was very refreshing. Additionally, I place great value on training and experience, and it's evident so does OEL. For all of these reasons, HIGHLY RECOMMEND OEL -- I'll certainly be using them for all of my future HVAC needs.

My HVAC unit coils were freezing for about 2wks and then it completely stopped blowing cold air all together. Alex came to the rescue and took his time checking everything indoors 1st, invited me to join him outside to explain to me what he was doing, he checked the round capacitor 1st and that was the problem, it was bad and it burned out. He also checked the levels of freon and it was low so he filled it up. He explained everything thoroughly and answered all my questions. Very, very professional and competitive rates. I highly recommend Alex A/C!

This is a phenomenal, local company, ran by two guys I completely trust. Rob and Danny are both really good at explaining what is going on, and they even asked me to climb onto the roof where the compressor is and showed me what was happening. Can't get better service than these guys, and they have definitely gained my trust. Also they will beat anybody's prices. They gave me a quote nearly half the amount of another company (but that company was definitely trying to rip me off). If you have any issues with HVAC, these are the guys to go to! Thanks Rob and Danny, it was a pleasure getting to know you guys.

Alumni Air called me within 10 minutes of posting a request on Thumbtack and came to my house in an hour. They assessed the problem and had to order parts. They came back when they said they would, installed the new equipment and left my house so neat you never would have known they were there. I would recommend them to anyone for HVAC services. They are prompt, neat and professional. The price was not bad either. They are my go-to guys in the future.

We hired this company to fix the shoddy work and damage done by another contractor. They were able to identify what needed to be done, address some other issues that were discovered, and performed the work quickly and at a fair price. What most impressed me was the knowledge of HVAC and construction; they took pictures and explained their recommendations carefully and thoroughly. Our system now runs the way it is supposed to, quietly, and efficiently. More importantly, we have piece of mind that the job was done correctly.

My technician, Eric, was probably the best technician I have ever had look at my AC. He came out quicker than expected by 2 hours and had everything fixed up and working tip top in less than 30 minutes. The charges were half of what Ive been quoted from other companies! Eric is an AC master and I will use this company anytime I have any HVAC problems! Will definitely be a customer for life! Thank You Eric!

We contacted Luke at Viking Air to investigate the foul odor coming from our HVAC system. He inspected both upstairs and downstairs, cleaned the coils, emptied the drains, and diagnosed a little bit of mold that was creating the odor (all for just $39). He installed a UV-C light in the handler and ultimately eliminated the foul, moist odor from our upstairs HVAC. Luke was courteous, thorough, and a true professional. Will not hesitate to contact him should we have any future HVAC issues.

I got several quotes and not only was his the best, but also he was the most confident and knowledgeable about installation. He was easy to reach by phone and text. He and his team arrived on time and worked efficiently. Jaime made sure every aspect of the project was complete and quality work. I cannot say enough good things about him. I was having some electrical issues in my home with lights flickering and breakers continuosly tripping, so i decided to have an electrician come take a look, i stumbled upon diversified and gave alex the owner a call, he was out within minutes and explained the problem and got everything up and running correctly the same day, since i had noticed he is also an hvac certified technician i had him take a look at my ac unit because it too would make a weird noise, he suggested a regular tune up and didnt even hesitate to make sure everything was running smoothely, if your ever in need of electrical or air conditioning services my recomendation would be diversified air solutions.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
