Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Reviews for Saint Petersburg piano movers

I moved to Florida from Maryland using another mover last month. It was a disaster. They left my piano outside saying they could not move it up the stairs even though both the piano and the stairs were included in the contract. I called Alex moving service and they moved my piano up the stairs the next day. They are the best. I will definitely use Alex moving for my next move!!!

Very professional movers and great care was taken moving my baby grand piano and antique dresser. And they were able to move up my scheduled appointment which I greatly appreciated. I would use Fast Moves again.

Excellent customer service. They were flexible with reserving a time for the move and arrived earlier than scheduled. They moved a 527-pound piano down a set of stairs without any issues what so ever. I would hire them again for my next move.

Stephen Embrey got in touch with me very quickly and was professional and pleasantly brief during the hiring process. The 2 gentlemen that came to move the piano were also courteous, professional and clearly experienced. The only reason I'm putting a 4 star rating instead of 5 is that someone forgot to put the lift they usually use in the truck. Regardless of fault, it would be a good thing to check for in the future. Not only did they risk injury to themselves, but also to the piano, which they had to move with moving straps (basically by hand). This was a very unfortunate oversight, however, the crew got the job done quickly, skillfully and professionally (despite the fact I'm quite certain they were grossly unhappy about moving a piano by hand). I would definitely recommend this company in the future.

I was quoted $225 for moving a baby grand and explained that the seller was moving and that it would be a tad tricky getting it out if her house, but not unreasonable by any means. The owner confirmed the price saying that it would not be a problem and would oblige as it was a slow time and they appreciated the business. However, after the piano had been delivered and I gave my credit card to pay, one of the delivery guys handed me the phone and the owner proceeded to tell me that it had taken longer than expected due to the fact that the seller was moving and had a POD in her front yard, which supposedly impeded the progress and that he would be charging me $250 instead, which was what I had been quoted by several other moving companies. I went to the seller's house before I bought the piano and by no means did the storage unit block the entrance to the point of impeding the pathway. The gentlemen who delivered the piano were friendly, yet proceeded to reattach the legs in the wrong positions among other missteps, which prolonged the delivery process. The entire procedure took 3 hours from door to door which included a 30 minute drive. I don't feel that this was an excessive amount of time, given disassembly and reassembly, and thus consider the additional charge unwarranted, especially since it was added after the fact instead of being addressed when the purported problem had been encountered. Satisfactory at best. I mentioned the 2 steps as well as the storage POD when I described the move before booking. After I was told that the pod presented a problem, I contacted the seller who said that the movers said quite the contrary; that she was told that the pod was not in the way at all. The only concern were some low tree branches that they were able to maneuver the truck around. As far as the tip, it was on top of the cell phone when I handed it back to the mover after I spoke with the owner and was subsequently charged more. Perhaps he should be questioned as to what became of it.
