Johnny B and his team (Tim, Regis and others) are the BEST! Don’t be fooled by the name of this company they are a general contractor and they do so much more than floors. I’ve used them to do several jobs since Sept and have more work in the near future to have them do. I found Johnny on Thumbtack and happy I did. I was moving back to the tampa bay and wanted work on my property before we moved back down. Knowing we wanted to remodel most of our house I gave him a laundry list of things I wanted done and asked for prices. He came in a reasonable prices and made a few great suggestions/ideas on what to improve. They’ve remove popcorn ceiling, painted entire ceiling, painted bedrooms, added new floors for entire villa, replaced new vanity and granite for all bathrooms, installed new cabinets and granite to kitchen, and knocked down a part of a wall to open up the space. They even repaired part of a ceiling that an electrician (I hired) ruined while they were at my house. When we arrived in Florida the floors looked AMAZING, but there was a few areas that needed to be repainted. NOTE: when they painted my house it was before I moved down and the AC was broken. They came out the next day to fix the job. It’s apparent that Johnny 100% cares about customer service and he wants to make sure they do a great job and that his customers are happy with results. I’m so impressed with the professionalism with him and his team and will be a repeat customer.

I have used cleaning services before but this one is an excellent honest no-nonsense one. I check with neighbors who like me, found them thorough, meticulous with attention to detail. They service condos and homes in Ashford Sound, Belleair Bluffs, Belleair Beach and Tampa. I also like they have access to licensed contractors for quoting upgrades, remodeling, etc. My friends and neighbors love their work and I personally gladly recommend them. They're the real deal and proud of their work.

Ray was extremely pleasant to work with. He arrived on the agreed too start time and performed the work in a very professional manner. Ray was very knowledgeable and answered any and all questions that I had about the job, as well as other potential jobs that I may have. Ray removed my broken back door and replaced it with the new one that I had already chosen from Lowes. Ray picked up the door for me and hauled off the old door as well as the accompanying debris from the install and he was able to provided all this service and work at the estimated price that he quote me online. The door installation looks great, functions as it should. I will be using ASB Construction, and specifically Ray in the very near future for additional work I need, including replacing the front door as well. If you are having a hard time finding a trusted professional that knows what he is doing and willing to do it at a very fair price, then you would be derelict in your research if you don't consider ABS Construction for your carpentry needs!

It's a pleasure having Jim do work for us. He's polite, punctual and does a great job. We can always depend on him to get the work done in the time he says it will take. When he's finished he leaves everything as clean as it was before he started. If there's a better way to do the work, Jim will think of it. His prices are always very reasonable. He has done many jobs for us, including repairing a ceiling that had been badly damaged from a major leak. He also disassembled a defective 15 foot built in wall unit, sanded, repainted and reinstalled it. It looks better than it did when it was new! While other contractors told us the whole unit had to be replaced, Jim found a better, less expensive way to fix it.

We are new to the Sarasota area and did not have any reliable way to find good dependable contractors. I used Thumbtack to contact Kimball and Sons.Ryan Kimball and all of his crew were very professionall, punctual and did high quality work. he made sure that the subcontractors he called were also responsive to our needs. If you are looking for an excellent and trustworthy contractor...I would highly recommend Kimball and dons...

Freeman Enmeier is a complete professional. He came in to our commercial construction (church building) after having to fire a previous general contractor. We had lost over 7 months and thousands of dollars. The church was desparate. In came Freeman, fixed the mess and went above and beyond the call of duty. He tirelessly worked with myself, our architect, the city, and all our subcontractors with excellence in mind. Because of his diligence we received a grant award for coming in on schedule. At the end of the project he not only came in on time, but to our surprise UNDER budget. He actually passed on his savings to us. What a class act. We not only got a building but gained a friend. I have already asked him to be my personal contractor for my new home. I would recommend Freeman Enmeier for any project large of small. As he says... He bids the job, he DOES the job.

Robert and his associate worked to redo my entire master bathroom as well as installed a new outside door and frame and built me a new deck. His attention to detail and explanation of work needed along the way gave me a feeling of involvement all through the jobs. I would definitely hire him again - he did what he said he would do (plus more as necessary) and was finished when he said he would be ( a rarity among contractors!) A pleasure to work with and a professional who truly aims to please

We are part of a 6 unit condo complex. George Sanders Construction repaired and replaced the decking and rails on all 6 units. I also had a few small things done on my unit . Was one of the only contractors who actually responded when questioned. Any issues were handled immediately. Also, reasonable compared to some of the quotes we received. Very satisfied.

I simply cannot say enough good things about Rob Prine and his business. This is one contractor that still does it "Old School" and by that I mean, hard work, not leaving until the job is completely done, and the customer is completely happy. He is as savvy a contractor as there is out there, and you would be foolish to even consider hiring anyone else. Folks, you get what you pay for, and Rob is worth many times more than what you are paying him, because of his many decades of experience. Don't waste your time and precious money, hire the best first, R.E. Prine Construction and Consulting.

I would highly recommend Phoenix Electrical & Mechanical Contractors! They installed a whole house generator for my dad. When the gas company flaked, Phoenix Electrical stepped in when they didn’t have to and solved the problem. They are professional, honest, they clean up after themselves, and the quality of work they provide is superior to anything I have seen lately.

TerBras performed a truly exceptional job renovating and updating our house. He updated our kitchen, renovated our master bath, and added special custom, one of a kind, decorative privacy walls around our pool. I have extensive construction experience and can honestly tell you that you will NOT find any contractor that provides the level of craftsmanship and professional conduct as TerBras. Use them on your project, you will be very happy.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
