I had Mowses Home Services come out to troubleshoot an issue with my A/C. They were prompt in returning calls/messages and came out and diagnosed the problem and were upfront with me about their findings. Along with the great service they did the repairs for what I felt was a very reasonable cost. Not to mention they followed up with me to make sure everything was working. Will absolutely use MHS for all my A/C maintenance and repairs and will be recommending them to my neighbors and friends.

Chad did an excellent job at not only doing a routine system maintenance but also notifying us of an issue with a rusty piece of our outdoor unit that needed to eventually be relocated otherwise would cause a refrigerant leak. Even little things like putting covers on shoes due to coming in and out of house. Will definitely hire them again and refer to all friends and family.

Wow!!! Let me start by saying Alex is absolutely amazing to work with. I am a landlord with a Condo in the Clearwater area, and have had issues with my AC unit every year. My tenants are moving out so I have decided to contact Alex to have him check on the AC unit, because my tenants mentioned that there was a little leak that was damaging the ceiling. Alex was extremely responsive, punctual, and very accommodating to my tenants schedules. He went out to the property and fixed the leak rather quickly. He also inspected the unit and did some diagnostics to make sure nothing else was wrong. He contacted me the very next day letting me know that he was able to fix the leak, and that everything else looked great. I asked Alex what I owed him for the work, and he said "Nothing"... Confused that I misheard him, I repeated myself and he again said "Nothing". He said that it was a very quick and easy fix and that he wouldn't feel right charging me for it...!!!! Wow!!! I have Never, and I mean NEVER, had an HVAC person not charge me for doing "a little work", no matter how small the fix. Needless to say I told Alex that I would like to have him as my go to AC guy for the future, and of course he was very humble and thanked me for contacting him. I've been through a number of different HVAC companies, and this is my first great experience. It is nice to finally feel like I have found someone who is willing to help and be absolutely honest with me, instead of charging me an arm and a leg for a fix that didn't work. Save yourself the trouble and hire Alex to take care of your HVAC issues.

Rite Way contacted me immediately and actually cleaned my entire HVAC duct system that same night. A long-haired dog and several years with no cleaning had my system smelly and clogged. Rite Way was totally professional, prompt, and reasonable! I was surprised at how quickly they responded. I was also shocked at the amount of dog hair that was in my ducts. Very impressed and highly recommend.

I am extremely pleased with this company. Robert was professional, on time, and offered a VERY fair price. He got here and knew exactly what to look for, found the problem right away, and had my house cooling down in less than a half hour. I appreciate most that he seemed very trustworthy. I have zero knowledge of a/c units, and anyone else could have told me I needed an expensive part with a lot of labor work. Robert was honest, and quickly found that I only needed a quick and easy fix. I have scheduled my maintenance services with this company and will use them for anything else I may need in the future. HIGHLY recommended!

Alumni Air called me within 10 minutes of posting a request on Thumbtack and came to my house in an hour. They assessed the problem and had to order parts. They came back when they said they would, installed the new equipment and left my house so neat you never would have known they were there. I would recommend them to anyone for HVAC services. They are prompt, neat and professional. The price was not bad either. They are my go-to guys in the future.

Michael was very professional, courteous, friendly, knowledgeable. He called to let us know he was on his way and when he would be here. He explained everything he was doing while performing maintenance on our dryer. He made sure that everything was corrected and set up the proper way so we could get the best performance out of our dryer. He was a perfectionist, which we really appreciate! We will absolutely be using The Dryer Vent Experts in the future and have an appt already booked for maintenance in 2 years! And I will refer Michael out if anyone needs dryer vent cleaning!

Arnold was very professional and seemed trustworthy. I purchased the $30 tune up and he was suppose to clear the drain. He said he put a product in the line so it can eventually drain. Days later, the drain became completely clogged which caused a part to malfunction and for the unit to freeze. I called Arnold and he sent two guys over later in the afternoon. My AC was not working all day. They spend a little bit of time and charged me $350 to replace the part and clear the drain; a problem that was caused by Arnold. Sadly, I like Arnold and planned on using his company for maintenance but this recent experience was disappointing and Arnold should be ashamed of his company’s shady business practices.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.
