Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.

This was my first golf lesson I’ve ever had and it was amazing. The way Vince simplified golf, made it easy to understand and had immediate results. These lessons are second to none.

I had my first lesson with Mike and he quickly saw the mistakes in my swing. Not to throw too much at me at once, he gave me four small changes to work on and build the foundation of my swing, including grip, positioning and alignment. I've already noticed a more consistent golf shot in just one lesson and I look forward to seeing what Mike can do for the rest of my golf game in the future.

I have nothing but great things to say about Vince. His responsiveness when I reached out was amazing. His lessons were informative & incredibly helpful. He knew exactly how to solve my push from the moment he saw my first swing. He even went as far as to send me videos after of my swing with captions to tell me what I needed to continue to work on. If you are looking for a golf lesson in the Tampa Bay Area, Vince is the guy you should go with. P.S. if and when you take a lesson with Vince, ask him to hit a drive. This man hits a golf ball further than I have ever seen a human being hit a golf ball. Ha!

I left my first lesson so confident! Vince really is the person you want helping you with your golf game! He is knowledgeable, patient, and fun! Vince had me leaving my first lesson excited for my second one. He was easy to get in touch with, responded in a timely manner and answered any questions I had. He truly is an amazing golfer and someone I now look up to in the sport. If you’re considering golf lessons look no further, you found your guy! I am confident you’ll leave your first session on cloud 9 like I did. Thank you Vince!!!!

Brianne is great- we had an initial 1 hour lesson/consultation and she was able to use that session to identify my needs and based on my goals she came up with a couple options on how to get me there. I also appreciate that my lessons start on the driving range and then we take the lesson to the course for 1-2 holes... no other instructor I have worked with has done this and it is great to put what I am working on to practical use on the course with feedback from an instructor to help maximize teaching and learning opportunities. I feel like I am working on my whole golf game, not just pieces of my swing. I will definitely recommend her to anyone who asks me about golf instruction.

John is a great instructor. He builds you up from what you already do well and tweaks what you need to improve upon. Which makes learning a positive experience. He starts with the basic fundamentals, and individualized his lesson for my needs and my goals. He also has a really great vibe about him. If you want a positive experience during a golf lesson. John is your guy.

Vince was just outstanding. He in a short time recognized a few simple things I was doing that was hurting my performance. He showed me what I needed to do correct them. I was afraid going in he would want to completely rebuild my swing which I wasn’t willing to do. After making these changes we worked on them the rest of the hour. The next day I played a round of golf using the changes we made. I hit every fairway off the tee and as late had really been struggling with my driver. I didn’t score well this day because I was hitting my irons 10-15 yards longer than normal and I never trusted this extra length all day long which caused me to fly most greens. I will continue to work on the changes and schedule a follow up lesson shortly.

I'm glad to have found Mike Riso. I've had only one 90 minute lesson and it has helped me tremendously. I am a 15-20 Handicapper, I play golf once or twice a week and I’m at the range multiple times a week. Mike was quick to diagnose what was wrong with my swing. He gave me simple tips in my swing that used less effort and less thinking about what I was doing. The result was a more efficient swing with less effort. What every golfer is looking for. My initial plan was to go in for my driver only, but Mike knew I had to establish a good foundation and work my way up to the driver. I have used the concepts he taught me with my irons on my driver the next day and I was crushing the ball. Mike’s calm demeanor and personable teaching style is a plus. If you have any issues with your swing at all, he's the man to see.
