Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

When 2 Men Moving never showed up and Andre would not take our calls, we were pretty desperate to find someone to move us. I reached out to Top Quality Movers and very soon after received a call from Brinson. He indeed was able to come the next day (Sunday). They kept in touch as to when they would arrive, worked swiftly and got the job done!! Most definitely will use them again if another move comes up. Thank you Brinson!

In general, great move. The crew however seemed poorly trained/experienced in moving and certainly in table leg removal and re-assembly. Fair price for what you got. Would recommend with an eye towards watching details.

From the time that I talked to Jose, who gave me a fantastic price for moving my 2200 sq ft home with an additional stop at a storage unit, to the move completion I got exceptional service. Both trucks arrived on time and the team of four guys got to work immediately. They wrapped all the important pieces and had my house loaded within 3 hours. One truck came to the new house, while the other one picked this things we had in storage. The guys were professional and made sure they put the goods where I wanted them. I highly recommend Dynamic Moving Solutions. Great Value and a truly great bunch of guys moving!!

Lenny's crew did an outstanding job moving our 4 bedroom house across town for us. This was our third move in 2 years and this was by far the best move.we have had. Lenny sent twoof his best and they loaded/unloaded same day. We have a lot.of irregular shaped furniture but they were able to get us loaded on one truck and with no damage to any furniture. These guys are amazing and work hard to make sure everything is done right. There is no.doubt that we will use Lenny and his crew for any future moves. Thanks again, Lenny!!

At the beginning, communication with Lisa was excellent. She was always prompt in responding, and The estimate seemed reasonable. After sending her a list of items we would need moved, the estimate she quoted us was approximately $300 (including military discount of 10%). She estimated that it would take probably 3 hours for the move to be done, as the movers would not have to pack anything, since I did tell her we would pack everything. As the move got closer, we ran out of boxes, so I emailed and asked that they bring us more boxes, which they did. When the 2 movers arrived, they taped the 15 or so boxes together for us and we packed the rest of our DVDs and books and some smaller items. Please note that the 2 guys we had moving us were extremely polite and respectful. No complaints there. The issues we had were that the move took over twice as long as was quoted, and when I called to discuss this with Lisa, she was very taken aback, but said she would discuss with the guys. It took over 6 hours to load our belongings onto the truck, including 45 minutes just to get our fridge out of the house and loaded. This also included my husband and I bringing the majority of the boxes outside RIGHT NEXT TO the truck so it would be faster for the guys to load. However, it took only a little over an hour to unload after Lisa talked to them that I complained about the time. When the job (an in-town move 10 minutes from the start location) was completed 7 hours after it started, I again spoke with Lisa to ask if anything could be done regarding the cost since it took them over twice the time estimated, she said, "Well, it seems like you had way more than you told me originally. And you're already at a discounted rate with the military discount. And with any other moving company you would be paying a lot more, so you're already getting a good deal." This upset me because I sent her an actual list of large furniture and appliances we needed moved, and she quoted me based on that. We didn't hide anything, especially because we needed the estimate to be as accurate as possible, as we were short on funds. We ended up paying almost $650 after military discount. I would not recommend working with this company. When complaints are made, even respectfully, it seems Lisa becomes defensive and refuses to work with you and blames us, the customer, when she was accountable as well.

I hired Lenny and his crew to move my parents from the home they had lived in for 36 years to a condo. Lenny and his crew were prompt, professional and very efficient. They treated my parents and their furnishings with respect. Lenny returned all emails and calls in a timely manner and called the day before to confirm all the information I had given him. I would highly recommend using Lenny and would call him again if a family member needed to move.

They were way early, put when I made sat up the move I told Lori that I would need a 26ft truck and when the guys arrived to pick up my living room set from a friends house they were in a 16ft truck so they had to cram my sofa on end and in the process ripped a hole in arm and had to make 2 trips so I had to pay a extra hour because they didn't bring the correct trk. The movers them selfs were great. But I would not recommend them.

june 24, 2015, Great service, terrific crew. On time, willing to extend their courtesy beyond what was necessary. Never a doubt on my mind that they were there to help. At the move in I walked away to take care of some other business, and left them to do their job, with no concerned about anything negative. Great Job Guys.........................Rich

We contacted Lenny through Thumbtack, who responded quickly to our post. After talking with him, then comparing him to other movers we had contacted, we hired his company. We can't praise them highly enough. His crew were professional and worked diligently to complete the job. Lenny's description of the job performed and the quote were honest and accurate. You can't go wrong with Lenny VanGo. And who else has such a creative name!?!

Not enough can be said about how disappointing my experience was with this company.. to the point that 'Professional' isn't even a term I would use to describe them. One of the only things they succeeded in accomplishing is being a real life stereotype of every single moving company horror story you've ever heard. If you want to avoid dealing with the moving crew showing up 20 minutes late to their first appointment of the day, seeing one of them spend the first 20 minutes or so on their cell phone (on your dime) having your new (9 month old $899.00 high capacity clothes dryer originally delivered in perfect condition) appliance scratched on the front corner and dented on the top, having that same machine dragged across a freshly painted garage floor and leaving scratches in the floor paint, having your $3500.00 bed mattress tossed into the back of a dirty truck without being bagged or protected in any way first, having the simplest instructions completely ignored (like 'do NOT lift this $450.00 solid steel 200lb BBQ grill by the side burner') resulting in a bent up side burner, being told by the 'leader' of the moving crew that your 2 year old solid steel $290.00 Mastercraft smoker is 'falling apart' and then being pressured by the salesman over the phone to leave them a tip while you're trying to find resolution for the damages they caused (and tried to deny)... If you want to avoid that? Then I strongly suggest NOT hiring this moving company. They were informed in writing and verbally over the phone that many of these items are heavy. The crew showed up in a truck that only had a loading ramp, no liftgate (unlike the truck pictured in their profile photo). They loaded the truck in such a way that space was completely wasted and items were (apparently) unstable to the point that something landed on top of my dryer and put a dent in the top. When the truck was unloaded, the level of care deteriorated even more. They didn't take the time to document the condition everything was in as they were loading and had absolutely no interest in verifying the condition of everything they moved before they jumped back into their truck and took off as if they were late for a visit to the topless bar. It was right after they left that I discovered the damage to the side burner of my grill from them lifting up on it after I told them several times not to. It took most of the following week to finally be offered a $100 refund onto my credit card. $100. That's all. Because they didn't want to pay the deductible of opening an insurance claim. -They were supposed to call on Monday (day after the move) to talk about the damage to the dryer, I also wanted to address everything else, including the damage to the grill I discovered right after they left. They never called. I called them Tuesday afternoon, left a message which they did not return. Called again Wednesday evening and was in the process of leaving another message when they called me back. They tried to blame me for taking too long to reach out to them about these issues and originally offered me a $40 refund to my card. I refused that and was told that they'd have to speak to the 'boss' and call me back the following day about a better offer of restitution. More than halfway through the next day I called them again and was told that $100 was the best they would do and that they won't utilize their insurance because of the size of their deductible being more than the cost/value of the damages. If I could leave zero stars for this company, I would... I wouldn't recommend them to anyone! From beginning to end they refuse to accept any accountability for a job poorly done, and personal items being left in worse condition than before they touched anything.
