He was honest with me. He told me what stains he could remove and what stains he would do his best to get up. The carpet looks beautiful. Unfortunately I have not been good at maintaining it so the padding has stains in it. He was very professional and I would definitely refer him to my friends and family. When I am able to financially, I will be having him come back to clean the grout and tile floors in the lower level of my town home.

I would recommend Keagan and Enriched carpet to anyone looking to have a professional job well done. I recently purchased a new apartment and went shopping immediately for a new carpet ( $800) for the master bedroom. The old (off) white carpet was very stained especially around the doorway. I later thought it worth a try to have the have the carpet cleaned as the potential saving was over 90%. Keagen arrived the next day on time at 3pm and cleaned the carpet. I was very satisfied with the result and now I have a clean carpet and big saving in my pocket. Thanks. Robert Mc

I spoke to F & S Carpet Cleaning, explaining that due to a leaking side wall on the enclosed patio, my wool carpet 8 x 10 was soaking wet. Chris explained what needed to be done to do a proper steam cleaning process. Within an hour two men came to pick up the carpet. I was very impressed with Andrew and Jean who came to pick up the carpet. Andrew again assured me and explained the process, cleaning, drying, etc. Within four days my carpet was returned looking new after the process of cleaning and taking out the mold was completed. I would definitely recommend them to a friend. Josephine Tierney

Manny is the most honest guy I have ever met. I base this opinion on the following true story. I was sure I had mold in my home due to a leak in the roof and a serious odor in the house. When the roof leak was repairedI asked the roofer if he smelled the odor in my home and he stated that he did smell it and it was obviously mold and that I should call a professional as soon as possible because the mold could spread throughout the house. The roofer also told me to be prepared to spend upwards of $10,000 for remediation. After the initial shock, I accepted the inevitable and checked Thumbtack for companies that remediated mold. Within 10 minutes 3 companies responded and after checking which company had the best reviews, I chose to call Advanced Microclean, and spoke with Manny. I explained that I needed someone to come and remediate my mold. He asked me why I thought I had mold. I explained my situation, leak in roof, bad odor, roofers professional opinion. I was taken aback when Manny told me "From what you are describing I don't think you have mold". Huh!! As bizarre as it sounds, I spent the few minutes trying to convince Manny to come and rid my house of mold, all the while fully realizing what the expected cost would be. After a few more minutes of me urging Manny to come and take my money, he asked for my address and said he would be there in about 15/20 minutes. As I waited for Manny to arrive, I called my BFF and explained the phone call I had with Manny and we both decided that this guy had some racket going on, he first feigns not believing I need remediation and then when he comes to my house he hits me with a telephone number estimate. I was ready and waiting for him so I could tell him I was onto his racket. Manny arrives promptly. First impression.... friendly honest looking guy. Hmmmm!... I then proceed to show him where the leak in the roof was and ask him if he can smell "the quite obvious mold odor." He looks me square in the face and states, "I do smell an odor"[I say to myself OK, here comes the pitch]... Manny continues..."but that odor is not mold!" Huh? Manny asks "where else do you smell this odor?" He then proceeds to check my master bath, master closets and checks any leather goods I have in the house. Spends about 30 minutes checking. He states, "Nope, as I first suspected, NO MOLD! "Still believing there had to be mold, I then called a company to come and check the air in my home for mold spores and have it sent out for analysis. The next day the company called with results...No mold in the house. I now finally realize what racket Manny from Advanced Microclean has going on...it's called HONESTY! Quite rare in south Florida! Thanks Manny.

I was fortunate to find John's company (ATP Environmental Solns) after not being satisfied with other mold remediation companies. John actually helped me out before any work was done, giving me very good advice on dealing with the insurance company and other suggestions. His company was more economical and timely than the quotes I received for my mold situation from some other competitors. He and his brother are true professionals, very honest and ethical. I cannot recommend highly enough.

The best. MRT's expertise and professionalism helped give me peace of mind. They offered options and solutions and was responsive through every step of the process, from deciding which course of action was best to find the source of the mold, to remediating mold, to helping me find the source of water and preventing future damage. As a first time homeowner, I couldn't have asked for a better a team. They've even offered to come back to dry and clean any future water spots as part of the service. A sign of how thorough and trustworthy they are. If you suspect mold or know that you have water damage and mold in your house, I highly recommend the Mold Response Team!

A friend of mine recommend International Mold company to me for mold testing after I mentioned I saw some dark growth under my kitchen sink. I called the company and Ed (owner) came to Orlando, on time as promised, and did an inspection and testing. The lab results came back with a small amount of mold that he could take care of. While working he noticed a small leak from the garbage disposal and he had that repaired as well. The whole operation took about 3 days. Ed did a good job and explained everything he was doing along the way. I would highly recommend his services to others.

As the initial project has wrapped up, there were a number of small details which left me a bit underwhelmed. - The cleanliness and care of Josh's crew was a concern as items surrounding the construction area were not well protected and required more cleanup/repair than I anticipated having to do, especially considering they were hired to repair my home. Some examples: paint removal from surrounding surfaces, spot cleaning tracked-in grease, patching "banged" trim from appliance relocating, replacing warped bathroom door - Missed details like insufficient paint coverage in areas, missing grout joints, not planning the order of the installation caused some areas to be left unpolished or unfinished entirely. - Despite some personal requests and upgrades, the final cost ended up being 30% more. I know to expect some margin of error for surprises. The original estimate was $4572.50 and the final cost was $6547.19. Overall, they completed the job and it's functional. I did not complain or haggle over additional expenses and paid as agreed. The transaction was average. I might consider using them again for projects where being "rough around the edges" is acceptable and mentally add extra margin for error in estimate price.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

How do you get rid of mold?

Mold is a naturally occurring and important part of our ecosystem. That said, excessive mold can actually be hazardous to your health. Mold remediation is usually the best strategy to get rid of unhealthy levels of mold in your home or office. If you’re not comfortable working with mold or the area is larger than 10 square feet (3 feet by 3 feet), it is highly recommended to hire a mold remediation professional to resolve the problem. However, if you’re DIY-savvy, don’t have any health risks, and are not freaked out by mold, the EPA gives homeowners the greenlight to clean mold areas that are less than 10 square feet. Here are some EPA-recommended DIY cleaning tips:

  • Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible. Dry all items completely.
  • Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.
  • Throw away absorbent or porous materials (like ceiling tiles and carpet) if they become moldy.
  • Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold.
  • Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
  • If you are unsure about how to clean an item (art, fine furniture, etc.) consult a reputable specialist affiliated with a professional organization in their field.

Is mold damage covered by insurance?

Mold damage may or may not be covered by your homeowner's insurance. Mold damage is caused by standing water and excess moisture. Mold damage can be covered by insurance when an item already covered under your homeowners insurance breaks accidentally — for example, if your plumbing suddenly ruptures and water floods your house, the homeowners insurance will cover part or all of the costs for the plumbing repair and any mold remediation costs necessary as a direct result of the water damage.

But you may not be able to get insurance to pay for your mold remediation costs if the damage is a result of your neglect — for example, if you’ve had a slow leak under your bathroom sink for years and have ignored the issue. If the insurer can determine that the mold damage is a result of your negligence, they likely won’t cover mold remediation costs. Also, most homeowners insurance will usually not cover mold remediation costs after a flood unless you have a special insurance rider covering your home in case of a flood. To help prevent mold damage, always keep humidity levels in your house between 30 percent and 60 percent, clean up water spills and damp areas right away, and ensure you have exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom.
