I will admit, I am/was probably a more difficult case. I thought I was doomed to a life of panic in social situations and forever longing to be couch bound away from the stress of daily life. I have tried medications, supplements, regular therapy, special diets... After my second session with Sarah (yes, sometimes it takes more than one so one must be patient with one's own healing), I can not describe the amount of love and calm I feel moving about day to day life. I finally feel free.

I worked with Kirsten from Swasdi Yoga for a private yoga session to help with my stress management.  Kirsten contacted me right away to set up a time and date that worked with my schedule.  She arrived at my home on time and was very professional, friendly and adapted the session to meet any physical limitation I had.  After our session, I felt calm, peaceful and energized.  I will be continuing with Swasdi Yoga and will recommend Kirsten to my friends and family as it was a very satisfying experience.

Davita is a truly remarkable therapist. No words can describe the amount of gratitude I have for her. She is a gifted therapist that has watched me transition from a disempowered state to that of an empowered one. With her intensive knowledge of hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, I was able to transition into the person I've always dreamt of personally, professionally, and financially. She has a spirit about her, that is inviting, encouraging and supportive that you need in a therapist and support system. She allowed me to understand and recognize my limiting beliefs and negative patterns to transform them into empowering thought and patterns, that has given me life long success and effective coping mechanisms. One of the best experts I've known, and had the pleasure of working with.

This place was amazing! The staff was so nice! I called and asked several questions before scheduling my appointment. They took the time to answer each one. If you are trying to get pregnant please give them a call. I'm 35 years old and going through my second round of IVF. I wanted to incorporate acupuncture in hopes of a better outcome. Dr. Tynes was wonderful. She took the time to listen, ask questions, and explain what my treatment plan would look like in order to increase my chances of getting pregnant. The atmosphere of the office was so relaxing and inviting. They offered me alkaline water and an assortment of organic teas. During my treatment I was offered aromatherapy and fertility guided imagery music. I've never experienced anything like this before. I will definitely stick to my treatment plan. I feel so optimistic about getting pregnant. Oh, and the price was unbeatable for all that you receive.

It was my first time doing a therapy off this sort. I was a bit doubtful and didn't know what to expect. However, Salome kindness and commitment was wonderful. I truly enjoyed.

My family and I have been clients of Jeane's for over 7 years. Her healing touch and oil therapy has helped us with everything from sprained ankles to the latest flu and even depression. Jeane is the only person I know whom I can honestly say is a genuine HEALER. She is gifted beyond words. Medical school can teach HOW to heal, but only a few special people like Jeane blend those cures with the most important ingredient: positive empathy. It is always an honor for me to work with Jeane, either as a patient or business partner.

When I made the decision to seek help again. I honestly didn't believe there was any for me. In that moment of desperation, all I knew was I needed to get somewhere safe. My addiction had me believing I wanted to die. Any addict reading this will understand that feeling. I had pretty much given up trying to find an open bed in a detox center. That's when Steven from Sunspire called and within a couple days I was admitted into Sunspire's 3rd party detox facility in Tampa. When I entered treatment at Sunspire Health Hyde Park on October , 2017 it was to save my life. However, being my third treatment center. I just expected more of the same. Do this, don't do that, chant the serenity prayer, do a 12 step program, and be on your way. What I got was more than this addict could have ever dreamt for; a new perspective on life. After a brief adjustment period of me wanting to control and run every aspect of Sunspire and my treatment program. Yes, me the addict who weeks before was on the edge of death knew what was best for me. Thank God for the amazing operational and clinical staff who maneuvered me through and convinced me to stay on the numerous occasions I wanted to leave because it was too much. I opened up and allowed myself to receive the treatment/services Sunspire offered. The individualized one on one therapy was eye opening and has honestly changed my life. After thirty years of using drugs to cope. I've finally come to realize that my issue isn't with drugs and alcohol; the issue is ME. My therapist individualized a treatment plan to my specific needs and with my input. This allowed me to dig deep into those things that plagued me from childhood into adulthood. The cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, psychodrama, relapse prevention, codependence, spirituality, relationships and family dynamics groups provided the knowledge, skills and tools I need to piece my life back together. Along with that they put great emphasis on NA/AA sponsorship and building a network of people outside of treatment. The outside meetings were a reintroduction to life and people clean. Reaching out and asking for help was something I just didn't do before Sunspire. I have a lot of work still to do. I am open and accepting to do that work. I have never felt so confident and as prepared to "live life on life's terms" as I do today after spending 90 days at Sunspire Health Hyde Park. For the first time in my life, I am looking forward to the future and a life in long term recovery. I finally got it and it's so simple, I never have to use again!

I offer live therapeutic music played by me on my Native American flute as well as alto silver flute. I am a cert. music practitioner, educator and cert. chromotherapist (unique form of color therapy). I combine live flute music played by me, with the addition of carefully selected, illuminated color. A therapeutic color gel is supported by a safe L.E.D. lamp, which is bathed on the client in a private session. The benefits are many and varied. Stress-related health imbalances, like insomnia, depression, ADD, sensory imbalances, menopause, PMS, and pain can be alleviated for various health imbalances based on stress. This is "Music as wellness." For youth groups, I offer recreational music making using drums, flute and of course laughter exercises. There, I emphasize the rhythms of courage, character building, integrity and self-control. This is educational in that I use phonics, counting, drum sounds and word rhythms to remember the beats. The heartbeat is emphasized for grounding and relaxation, helping the brain waves to balance. I use wellness exercises like brain gym to help stimulate and balance both sides of the brain. We provide happy hour without a hangover.

First and foremost, I work to create a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust, empowerment, and authenticity. If those variables are not present, how can we feel safe to change? I am trained in advanced counseling skills and techniques that are shown in research to be fast and effective at creating change on the brain level. My practice does not use a cookie cutter approach. Each client is evaluated on their unique needs, preferences for treatment, and communication and relational style. I use only evidence based practices and strive to create fast and lasting change. My job is to put myself out of a job! I am an Iraq veteran and specialize in trauma, anxiety, chronic health concerns, and relationship counseling. My experiences lend a unique perspective to the work I do and my clients often say that I seem to truly understand and empathize with their experiences. It is an absolute joy to watch people grow and change every day. Seeing someone find the happiness in their life, make a meaningful connection, feel more whole, and have their "why" to get up each day is the most amazing experience. My work is not a job, it's my "why". I don't just "do" counseling, I am a counselor. The world needs more compassion, kindness, joy, and support. Creating that in my little space, in each interaction, is my way of making the world a better place.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
