Manny was extremely professional, called the day before to follow-up, and was punctual. Manny was able to replace my garbage disposal with much ease, and went above and beyond by running out to Lowe's for additional parts that I needed so that he could finish the job to complete satisfaction. If I needed any additional home maintenance work done, I would most certainly call upon Manny again.

I had several contractors come out. Arijatos impressed me the most and gave me a “these are good people” feeling. They were very knowledgeable and explained in detail what the job would entail. The estimate was well written. The price was fair and scheduling was easy. I am more than happy with the job that was done. They took their time and seemed to care about doing a quality job. I’ve recommended them to friends and I am already in the process of hiring them again for my next project.

Jorge fixed leaks on old existing porch. He did such a great job, i hired him to repair roof at my daughter's house. He is very respectful, knowledgeable, and offers choices when it comes to the repairs. His price was reasonable for the amount of work required. I would definitely recommend Jorge as a roof contractor.

I just wanted to leave few words about the shopping experience we had with Nelson. Our project was a complete repainting and reflooring of our house plus few other minor improvements. While we did not award this project to Nelson and his team I want to say thank you to him for being very thorough with the project, answering all of our question and providing competitive quote. He was very professional and helpful with all of our requirements and he was out first choice out of 4 contractors to do this project. Thank you and good luck. Steve

We have used Gordon a couple of times, and highly recommend him. He has done all sorts of jobs from easy toilet repair, GFCI outlet and breaker repairs, fan assembly/install, sprinkler repair, to moving electrical outlets and fan locations. He is always on time, communicates well, does the job right, and cleans up afterwards. It is nice to have a handyman that is also a licensed electrician, so we can get multiple jobs done in a day or afternoon.

Juan was absolutely fantastic to have. He painted the entire inside of out Home, the garage door, front door, and window shutters for us. All was done with absolute professionalism. Also, we had to move his start date multiple times because of other contractors taking longer than expected and he was always open and willing to be flexible with us. Thanks again!!!

Lou is an amazing handyman. He is very professional, he came in and assessed the project and provided me with a quote, even though he encountered a lot of issues due to the previous contractors work he still maintained his original assessment and completed the project with professionalism. I will be contacting him again for my future projects for sure and i would advise the next client to do the same.

Dave did a good job of getting an awkward roof job done. He did a good job at coordinating some sub-contractors as well. He did it at a fair price.

We had a remodeling job for my home and had 5 contractors bid the project. Sylvester at Blair Millenium Construction had, without a doubt, the best priced and most detailed bid we received and therefor he was hired.   He provided a detailed schedule and the only time we ran over on the schedule was when I had decided to change something. Even with that change, he finished in no time. I was extremely happy with his work and the final product. If I have another project Sylvester will definitely be our first call.

One of the most honest contractors/handymen I have ever dealt with. Was very transparent over his charges and was a pleasure to deal with. The work involved matching travertine tiles to create two wide long mid-steps down to family room which originally had an 8 inch drop down which was too high. Also removed old laundry room sink and replaced with a new one. Repaired some pool enclosure doors and the front door which was cracked at the bottom.

Donato and his team were amazing. They went above and beyond and never said no to our requests. The flooring and bathrooms turned out incredible. We loved his profesionalism and formality. After interviewing numerous contractors, Donato gave us hands down the best price and was always honest about the timing and the work. We would recommend him and his team hands down to anyone and hope to work with him in the future. If you want someone responsible and honest I recommend you hire Arielle Development.

Gustavo from Go Remodelings was amazing! He was responsive from the moment I sent out my project for bid, gave a great value and did a great job. While Gus was at my home I asked him to take a look at some other fans which were installed incorrectly by another contractor months back and he agreed to take a look and identified what was wrong with them. I asked him how much it would be for him to fix it and he said he'd do at no cost. Talk about service! I plan on having Gustavo come back to install some other fixtures and work other home projects in the future. I highly recommend Go Modelings for any home projects.

We just had two exterior doors replaced and Jason did a great job. He was one of the few contractors that returned our call for the job, he came out for the initial bid and for the installation exactly when he said he would. He was prompt, professional, courteous, reasonably priced and did a great job. We would not hesitate to hire this company again.

Mr. George Mitchell is the epitome of an Exceptional Construction and Remodeling company. Undeniably, his family operated business is the utmost reliable and trust worthy company, I have been associated with thus far. I am a real estate investor and a retired 23 year army veteran. He values veteran’s service to our country. He methodically managed the overall essential and tedious arrangement of my electric fireplace, crown molding, painting, carpentry & electrical work, mini-stone, and wall mounted television mounting. Surely, this job was without any mistakes or flaws. I HIGHLY recommend his service and approve of Mitchell Construction & Remodeling “BEST Quality of Work” I had during my 15 years of investing. His company exemplified a keen eye of meticulous detail craftsmanship, knowledge, ethical, competent, and exceptional people friendly as well. I surely have found me a reliable contractor that completes the job with pride and perfection. I had Robert come to my home to give me an estimate on some damage in my restroom. He was very polite and took the time to explain what would need to be done. Everything was completed to my liking and in a timely manner. It's hard to find a business in construction with patience and quality work like Ross Constructions Services! I have recommended to friends and family because I know the job will be done with pride and honesty.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
