My family and I travelled to Orlando for a Christmas vacation. Chef Maurice came each day for a week and catered to a family of 13 which included 7 adults and 6 children, age 3 to 14. He was able to prepare meals to accommodate finicky children to hungry adults. He was able to meet the demands of our daily changing schedule. Not only was he flexible, he easily meshed with the personalities of our family. This could not have been easy since we were in and out of the kitchen. The food was terrific. Breakfast was made to order as everyone tumbled out of bed to the smell of coffee and the menu of the day. Although I was offered to create a menu with the chef, I chose to tell him our likes and dislikes. Everyday was a wonderful surprise. Everything from steak dinners, grilled meats to wraps. I personally loved the meatballs. Chef Maurice created desserts, including a special birthday cake for us. The spread of appetizers for New Years Eve was spectacular! This was my 1st experience having a personal chef. His expertise, professionalism and service were outstanding. Without a doubt, he enhanced our vacation with his gourmet food. I would highly recommend his company.

Chef Dameon and his team prepared a dinner for 30 at a home in Reunion. It was a very important event for my company and from the get go, he understood there was much riding upon this dinner. From our initial interactions via email and our pre-dinner calls, I knew he was the right chef for this event. We had six passed h'ors d'oeuvres (shrimp skewers, amazing!) as well as a beautiful cheese plate we added at the last minute. Our servers, Dan, Heather and Carlos were attentive to all our guests and responsive when we ran short, finding solutions on the go and generally making our guests feel welcome and cared for. We added two guests at the last minute, but Dameon was seemingly prepared for everything. He went out of his way to accommodate a vegetarian meal at the last minute and his vegetables and potatoes were OUT OF THIS WORLD. The lemon butter sauce that accompanied the fish entree was amazing and the filets were cooked to perfection. Dameon and his team left the kitchen cleaner than they found it (even mopping the floor). I would hire them all in an instant. On a personal note, when I might have freaked out a little about extra guests and whatnot, it was his calm nature and cheerful presence that made it all okay. He's aces in my book.

We are so glad that we chose Chef Corwin as our wedding caterer!! The food was amazing and we know not only because we tasted it ourselves, but because our guests raved about how good it all was. My husband and I felt comfortable with Corwin from the first time we met him. He is very professional, yet he will make you feel like a very important friend as well. We are extremely satisfied with his services, and we plan to use him for any future events as well. Thank you Chef Corwin!!!

If you are looking for delicious Italian food for your next party, we highly recommend Chef Paola Santagati of Italia Cuisine Co. We attended a private dinner party on New Year’s day in the evening where we enjoyed several appetizers, both hot and cold, a twist on caprese salad, cheese ravioli in a fabulous butternut squash sauce, tender lemon chicken with capers, and potatoes. When told of special dietary needs, Paola prepared vegetarian options to replace the chicken. Each course was presented on lovely dinnerware and at a comfortable pace with the Chef’s ever present smile offering second helpings. While we were full there was that little space left for dessert and we were not disappointed. First came tiramisu topped with pomegranate seeds, then home-made snowball cookies, chocolate pops, two kinds of dessert breads and just when we were ready to call out “Enough, I’m done”, she presented us with her delicate truffles on a beautiful miniature spiral staircase. Every aspect of this dinner fed our senses as well as our souls. Chef Paola’s offerings are not just from her kitchen, but truly from her heart.

Everything about my experience was amazing. I used bless by soul food catering & more for my best friend's bridal shower and I swear Antoine single handedly made the day even more special. Not only was she continuously quick to response, she was incredibly flexible, made last minute changes for me the day before and even personalized the table for no extra charge! I am so thankful for her!!!

My experience with Gourmet Crepes Cafe and Catering was delicious! I was having a party with some of my friends and Jean came to help me out making the best crepes I haven't had in a long time... Coming from Bretagne in France (where crepes are originally from), I really fell like home while tasting them. Perfumed perfectly with orange blossom, my guests were delighted and I was really happy I asked Jean to come. His smile and professionalism enchanted me and he really helped to the success of my party.

Our guests raved about how amazing everything was. The Chef personally walked around to each table to make sure the food was great for our guests. Savyor Events are the most professional caterers. On time, helpful with creating a menu in our budget, and then delivering food that is fresh, hot, and delicious. For appetizers, I would highly recommend the bacon wrapped jumbo shrimp and the prosciutto wrapped mozzarella. Main course: My choice = sautéed mushrooms/steak and chicken/pineapple shish-ka-bobs was my favorite. The mushrooms were exquisite! Savyor's serving staff was a pleasure to work with; friendly, prompt, clean, and courteous. Definitely using Savyor Events for the holiday party!

Dear Pebbles Enterprise Inc. It has been seven months since my daughter's birthday party and I just wanted to tell you that the catering of the meal was superb! The food was delicious, the table decorations and arrangements were beautiful, and the staff was a delight to work with. Not only was everything that was promised delivered, there were extras thrown in as well that made the event even more special. I feel for everything you did for us, making sure that a thousand and one details were perfectly executed, made the value of the service you provided more than worth the expense it cost me. Your knowledge of event planning and your professional, friendly approach made the major part of the birthday celebration delightful. The best part of all, was when my daughter told me that the event was even better than she had hoped it would be! Thank you for everything,

I hired DIYM to cater my husbands retirement party. The entire experience was great from selecting the menu to delivery and setup to eating the delicious food. Mathew is professional, punctual ( actually early!), and an amazing chef. Everyone at the event raved about the BBQ and the homemade sauce. Everything needed was included, every detail considered. I highly recommend Mathew and DIYM catering for your next event.

The food was outstanding! All of the guests at our wedding were very pleased and we heard no complaints. The staff was very professional. We were a little disappointed at how quickly they packed up and left. We were also a little disappointed that they didn't leave any food for us to have a plate after everyone was gone as we, the bride and groom, were to busy with our guests to really get a chance to eat. I would definitely recommend Char-Don Catering to anyone and would definitely use them again for any other event!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
