This is the first time I'm giving someone 5 star review prior to the completion of the job. I have an old/discontinued water heater, an unusual issue. Jontell has been very honest throughout the process and gained my trust. We're still configuring the issue with my heater but I feel comfortable to count on him. He helped me understand that my heater is an old unit and the part has to be on special order. He even came out to my place after hours to ensure hot water is temporarily up and running for me. When it comes to this type of services, I've encountered too many people who just wanted to take the money and not follow through. However, Jontell has been very professional and honest with me. The part to fix my water heater has been ordered and Jontell ensured he will do the installation again at no cost. I understand unusual situation like this happens in this business. We're dealing with electrical and sometimes it's just out of human's hands. However, I'm confident to count on Jontell to complete this job. No wonder he has over 100 positive reviews! He sure will have my future business as well as references to my friends. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, honest plumber who won't scam you and get the job done, you've got the right person here!

He is extremely professional. He had the wrong size since I didn’t give enough information, but he was patient and willing to quickly return with the correct water heater. Also diagnosed another issue and fixed it all together. On time, very responsive.

Kristopher did an amazing job with replacing my water heater. On a short notice, he was able to accommodate my appointment and got the water heater installed within 24 hours of me requesting it to be replaced. He is very reasonable, responsive and polite gentleman. I will definitely recommend him over any other big plumbing companies to get more value for money. He does his job thoroughly, explains everything he is doing and cleans up after he is done.

We woke up to a busted weather heated Saturday morning. We sent out 3 inquiries and we decided to go with this company. So very happy with did. They were at our house within 2 hours and we had our new water heater installed. Clean job with no mess left behind. They were courteous and professional. We had a very minor issue and they came back within the hour and fixed it. We would recommend them to anyone and everyone. We will use them again. Keep up the great work.

Absolutely great to work with! We had a new hot water heater installed same day. We had issues with the heater at no fault of the install and they came back out to try and solve the issue. They have spoken to my husband on a late call trying to troubleshoot and we ended up needing Rheem to send us a new part. We purchased the water heater directly from HD.

Very Honest! Super knowledgeable! Saved me over $700!! I thought, and was told by other plumbers, that I needed a brand new water heater. But after Keith came and did his diagnosis, for FREE I might add, he informed me that I could save money by just replacing some parts (i don't remember what the parts were called) and repairing the water heater instead of replacing it. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to have someone be honest about what you truly need instead of trying to sell you something expensive just to make money!

Fred was the first one to respond to my request for a hot water heater replacement. He took the time to explain what I needed to do to stop the water from continuing to flood the garage. He also explained what I needed to know to purchase the right water heater for replacement (height, width, etc). He gave me information on what causes water heaters to deteriorate and how to minimize that in the future (by draining the water heater at least annually). Fred came over immediately to start the water heater removal process and went to Home Depot with me to assist me in purchasing a new one and all the components that were needed for the install. It is obvious that Fred is a very knowledgeable and skilled plumber. He did a fantastic job from beginning to end. His pricing was more than reasonable. I would definitely hire Fred again and can also highly recommend him as a first choice for your plumbing needs.

Derek was clear and informative with his communication prior to and during the installation of our water heater. He competed the job with exceptional professional and was kind to myself and my family. He explained the installation and detailed recommendations for maintaining the water heater. This was a job that I was concerned about, but Derek was outstanding and I've already recommended him to my next door neighbor in the market for a new water heater. I will be calling him back for any additional plumbing needs that arise!

We had the best experience with Freddrick at Sealed Tight Plumbing from the very beginning, starting with him fitting us in earlier than expected. We had an EXTREMELY difficult clog in our kitchen — he went way above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of, even correcting the installation of the pipes for us. He is so personable and professional, and takes a lot of pride in getting it done right. I have already recommended him to others. A great trustworthy plumber is such a relief.

Camouflage Construction came out to quote us on having a water pipe repaired. We received a great quote and James started immediately. He found a few issues from the previous installation and was very knowledgeable on what the issue was and explained how he would correct it. The repair was all done in half a day which was great. We were very happy with the quality of work and even had better water pressure! Will be calling James again for any work I need done.

Very pleased with the service Louis provided. We recently purchased a 20 yr home with the original a/c units and furnace. During the inspection, we were told that all units would need to be replaced soon, but we were going to wait it out. When it started getting cold, we noticed that there was no heat on the first floor, where my 90yr old mom resides. I got my Thumbtack quotes and contacted Louis. He was here within two hours. He mentioned that he could temporarily fix the system, but eventually we are going to have to update. I asked for a quote to replace all units, and he provided very competitive rates. I did my research, and his prices would be hard to beat. We now have new units, and our home is very comfortable. I highly recommend Louis & G&H heating and Air.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.
