I hired Scoa remodeling to work on a house built in 1953 that I am about to sell. There was rotten wood all along the exterior facia which needed replacing and painting. Mr. Wilkins proposed a plan to repair the wood, and pressure wash and paint the exterior. His work was quick and very professional so I hired Scoa to paint the interior and fix some buckled dry wall. Mr. Wilkins repaired dry wall, fixed a minor mold problem and painted the interior of the house. The work took about 1 1/2 months and was very professional. He gave me a fair price on all the work. I will hire him again at my next place. Also, I hired Jimmy for an entire home remodel and he handled the entire renovation for me. He painted the interior and exterior and painted the kitchen cabinets so now they look brand new. He installed brand new hardwoods in the kitchen and sanded and polished the existing hardwoods so they look brand new also. He renovated two bathrooms with new tile and glaze to the existing tub so that looks brand new as well. He installed all the new fixtures and appliances in the kitchen. You can hire Jimmy for small jobs or very large jobs. His prices are very good and his quality is excellent. I highly recommend him and I will call him my self for future jobs.

Charles was great to work with. His work quality was fantastic and he was very accommodating with our crazy schedules. We are very happy with the finished product. He custom built a hall tree/storage for our front entrance and made it look as though it was part of the house. We would definitely recommend Charles.

Look no further for a trustworthy, hardworking and professional contractor. Michael and his team pulled an all nighter in custom building our shelves as well as laying out tiles around our fireplace. The result? The place looks fantastic and they did it all before we moved in! We are hiring him again to put up custom cabinets. They were able to save us time, hassle and money vs. going through a big box chain. I highly recommend them.

Douglas Painting provided great value for the price. I selected Douglas over several other bids due to their responsiveness and estimate. The estimate was about average after I rejected a couple bids that were about twice as high. I needed this project completed by Thanksgiving, and Douglas and his crew scheduled their work on the weekend to get it completed on time. I removed wall hangings and electrical wall plates. They moved furniture, repaired minor defects on the surfaces and taped and covered before painting. I was concerned about paint drips, especially from the ceilings, but there were none. The cut line between the ceilings and the walls were very precise and clean. They completed the job (five rooms) in about eight hours. Walk through after the job was easy because there were no discrepancies! They were courteous and diligent throughout the project. Douglas painting is definitely on my re-hire list for future projects.

If I had to sum up my experience with Mr. Pernell in two words: professional and trustworthy. Mr. Pernell demonstrated a level of quality, communication, and professionalism that exceeded my expectations and spoke volumes of his value as a contractor. He wrote an initial email response to a quote request with a professional candor while addressing my specific repair needs. Mr. Pernell arrived appropriately early and assessed the drywall repair, including a specific plan of action and cost. After we approved the amount, he set to work right away and completed the repair quickly, efficiently, and with utmost attention to detail. I have hired many handymen and contractors in the past, and without question, Mr. Pernell is the best I have encountered or hired. It is not often that you find an honest contractor who delivers quality and timely work on budget. I encourage you to consider this company for future projects. You will be just as impressed as I am. Feel free to contact me for a reference anytime.

Couldn’t be any happier with my selection! Josh came out and thoroughly inspected the attic and roof. Took pics and videos of problem areas. He immediately noticed 3 squirrels in my attic and set traps. Explained my options for sealing gaps/entry points and quoted me a very reasonable price. I decided to go with whole home shielding to prevent any potential new entry points. Josh and his brother came out as scheduled and completed project as promised. I especially liked that he took pics along the way. The workmanship was top-notch and I was very pleased. These guys were professional yet personable and a pleasure to interact with. I would definitely use them again in the future and recommend to family and friends.

Tom tiled three bathrooms, one laundry room and replaced my old back splash in my kitchen. He did outstanding work! He had to custom cut every singel tile for the backsplash - 60 square feet of tile. He really improved the appearance of our kitchen. He also remodeled our guest bathroom. He was going to tear out the existing outdated tile shower. However, since the shower was in such good shape, he recommended keeping it and just tile the floor and stoop of the shower. He painted the bathroom with two colors that tiled it all together. In addition, he installed bead board and trimmed it out. Excellent wood worker and painter too. I would highly recommend him!

Fernando & Gabriella were wonderful to work with. I'm very pleased with my sewing table. They custom built it from the measurements I gave them so it would fit perfectly in a modular Ikea system I had designed. They cut the whole in the top of the sewing table and installed the sewing machine lift as well.

Zoltan made five pieces of bedroom furniture for me - two night stands, two wardrobes, and a chest. These were intended to compliment an Indian antique headboard. The pieces were made from my drawings and some pictures. The furniture is exactly as I described, the workmanship was outstanding, and I could not be happier! What is more, Zoltan told me exactly when he could do the work, brought me samples of finishes so that we could be sure they would compliment the headboard, and kept me updated throughout the process. The delivery was as careful and thoughtful as the rest of the experience and exactly when he said he would deliver. I knew exactly what I wanted both in size and workmanship, and it just is not available in stores at any price. Thankfully, I found Torteli Custom Woodworks. Now, I have heirloom quality real wood furniture, of my design, made by a true craftsman. I highly recommend this shop.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
