I highly recommend using Francis for help with training your dog. He was knowledgable, patient, and great with my dog. We had 6 classes with him and he got my stubborn dog to do things I never thought she could do!!! I am so happy with the results. I have worked with many dog trainers in the past and he is one of my favorite!!!

I reached out on Thumbtack for a dog trainer and Dawn responded within 15 minutes. She patiently explained the process involved to train my 7-year old Dachshund, who - shame on me - previously had no obedience training. Then Dawn came to my house to meet Max and give her assessment. At the appointed day/time, Dawn arrived and led Max away for a couple of weeks of off-leash training. He's still "at camp" and I'm getting periodic progress reports from Dawn, laced with a little humor. I miss the little guy and am really looking forward to seeing the results! Mark Baker

Ann Lewis, of Pups to Pooches, is one of the best dog trainers I've ever worked with. She is very knowledgeable about breed temperaments and what motivates individual animals. She is a great person to work with, especially if you have kids and a new dog or puppy because she will work with the entire family and teach kids how to interact with your new pup so there are no conflicts. I can't recommend Pups to Pooches highly enough. I plan to continue doing routine maintenance work to keep my dog challenged.

Jan is a truly gifted trainer. My dog was abused as a puppy and he had difficulty being around anyone but family, refused to go for walks away from home and hated getting out of the car. Jan has helped me introduce positive reinforcement techniques to train my dog to see the world differently and gave me the confidence to work with my dog on several other problems we were having. She uses several techniques, including training the owner to react appropriately to the dog's behavior, obedience training to work on regularly with the dog as well as good tips to build a stronger bond with my dog so we can enjoy each others company and the company of newcomers in a safe manner. Having Jan as my trainer has been a great experience and I highly recommend her! She is devoted to helping my dog and I build a happy and safe home environment. With a persistent, positive outlook that any dog can be trained with a little love and some yummy treats, Jan has changed my dog's life and mine.

Loved that they worked with me in putting a custom program together to work with my budget. That was my biggest set back to get her trained. Getting the training my dog needs with a budget I can afford. I will do more training for advanced later on.

Cris is a great trainer. My Weim 80lb puppy (1 year 9 months) spent 3 weeks with Cris, and it returned a changed puppy. Obedient, less anxious, with better manners. Cris was aware that I was very emotional about the whole separation from my puppy, he also knew that I needed help urgently, we were having problems adjusting to living in an apartment, Cris was amazing and he picked up my dog that same weekend, I am so thankful to him. He sent pictures, videos and updates every day. He is very professional, compassionate and caring for both the dogs he's training and the dog's owners. Thank you Cris, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you did for us. Bono is a better dog thanks to you :)

Kate is a great choice for dog training and behavior. She is very personable, easy to talk to, listens well to your situation and makes recommendations. I noticed immediate behavior improvement with my pit bull mix. By changing his routine and following Kate's suggestions we are well on our way to a better behaved, happy, less stressed relationship. I'm addition, Kate educates you on dog behavior and gives great insight into their world, this is invaluable information for pet owners.

Our family recently worked with Sonja to help us teach our new rescue dog (1.5 years old) some manners. He is the most friendliest dog but would jump on people, play bite things and people, and was extremely hard to take for walks. We have learned so much with Sonja's help and encouragement. Sonja knows her stuff, she is upfront, reliable and always makes herself available for questions. No doubt that Sonja is one of the Best dog trainers around. The whole experience was worth every single penny. Now when friends come over to our home, we hear comments like, "Oh! Your dog is so well behaved." Even during a dinner party, he stayed in his "place" when told to do so. We are so proud of our rescue's accomplishments. He is the best dog ever and thanks to Sonja, everyone can see that when they come into our home or when we are out for a walk.

They were able to train my dog in a way that I can now effectively communicate to him. Previously he would bark at strangers but now he is obedient. I highly recommend them and will consider putting my other dog too.

My wife and I rescued a puppy back in January, and we were really happy about it! However, we did not know what we had gotten ourselves into. Bo, our puppy, was very calm the first few days we got him, but as time progressed, he started to become a little bit of a hassle. At first we thought it was because he was a puppy that he always wanted to play, but it just seemed that he never rested. We had trouble with potty training him, and we could not have him on a leash. We were seriously considering giving him up because it was getting too much to handle. Thankfully, a good friend of ours recommended ADZK9s. I gave Doron a call, and he quickly put us on his schedule. Bo and I met him at their facilities, and he treated Bo immediately by giving him all shots he needed. We decided to enroll him in the 1-Month boarding and training program they provide, and it is the best thing we did for Bo and us. Bo was another puppy when he completed the program. He was obedient and calmer while still being the joyful and playful little puppy we first got. We were amazed at the results. He was completely potty trained, and he enjoyed his leash among many other things. Doron and Arlene explained that Bo was a special case. During his training they learned that Bo has tremendous amounts of energy, and that is why we were having such a hard time with him. At the beginning they had a tough time with Bo because of that same reason, but they didn't give up and were able to find a successful way to train him. We are grateful to them for that. They are great people, and they go above and beyond in what they do. They took their time to explain the process and share their knowledge with us we can be the best owners to Bo. We 110% recommend them for anyone who is looking to have their dog trained.

It's been an awesome experience working with Puppy Training 1 on 1 so far, we've done two private lessons with Jake and our golden retriever and couldn't be happier with the level of service we've gotten. Jake has been amazing, and we're seeing significant improvement in our puppy!

Working in Alpharetta and living in Midtown makes it difficult for me to give my 60 lb. dog the time and attention he needs throughout the day. Anita has been a great resource for our family. She makes sure Liam gets to burn off pent up energy, as well as provides affection before she leaves. I always get a picture of his smiling face, and that gives me the peace of mind that my furbaby is happy. I highly recommend her.

I've only had my first lesson and I am already seeing significant results. My male German Shepherd was very hard to handle even with a gentle leader. He would bark and lunge aggressively at other dogs and people while on our walks and would continuously bark at neighborhood walkers from my window. They explain everything and are very informative and know what they are doing. I've felt like I've been walking on thin ice because my dog has gotten in trouble with animal control with his aggression. Now I have the confidence to take him on walks and to public places. I don't even use the gentle leader now because the e-collar has him under control. I'm feeling very optimistic and look forward to the rest of my classes.

After seeing all of the five star reviews on Facebook and kudzu I decided to give Mountain Pet Resort a try. Paula is amazing, and now that my dog is trained, I fully intend to use them for boarding in the future. The kennel is the cleanest I’ve ever seen.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
