I can’t begin to express my gratitude for this company. I arrived at my rental home on Monday morning to find a disaster left by prior tenants. My usual handyman had bailed 20 minutes prior, and my new tenants were moving in within the week. This company went above and beyond to not only provide me with an electrician but also to provide names and contact information for other service experts to fix all of the damage. The very friendly electrician arrived on time and completed everything I needed- same day. I now have appointments scheduled with the other recommended technicians. Such a rare find and I really couldn’t be happier.

I am very pleased with my ceiling repair. Felipe was punctual, professional, and fair in his pricing. His work area was neat and contained the dust and debris from the sheetrock. I would hire him again and highly recommend him for another project. I could not get photos to upload.

Luis responded to my job posting almost immediately. Communication was very good throughout the project. He showed up on time. Then he diagnosed and methodically narrowed down the problem, which turned out to be a pretty simple fix, but one I never would have known. Because I was so happy with his work, I asked him if he had time to look at two other nagging electrical problems that I had put off for some time. He fixed both quickly. I am very handy and enjoy performing minor home repairs myself. But I respect electricity. Although I paid Luis more than the quote that he initially gave me, it was well worth it to me considering his communication, skill, performance, and demeanor. I'm keeping his number on speed dial!

He exceeded our expectations, we were prepared for replacement of water heater but he came and repaired it at much lower cost and warrantied his repair. He also took care of 3 toilets and replaced the garbage disposal. Repairs we thought we would have to schedule for a later time based on the expected cost of the water heater. I am running upstairs now to take a HOT shower. I highly recommend his services.

Three guys came and worked swiftly to clean our gutters and do a few small repairs around the house. I wanted to give 5 stars because they were so friendly and fast, but they did leave some shingles that blew off the roof laying in the yard for us to pick up and couldn't fix a couple of the items they included in our quote. All in all we were pleased though and would hire them again.

First of all Miguel is very kind person to work with. Miguel has done excellent job in repairing my roof. During heavy rain I could see water on my master bed room ceiling. First day he came to get all the details. Depanding on my availablity he scehduled the repair. He is very quick in his replies either via text or phone. He came on time and finished the repair. One good thing about him is he does not over charges like other contractors do. He will give you very optimum quote. He belives in quality work. I had to delay the schedule in 2 hrs and he re-scheduled it without any problem. Talking to him came to know that he has been doing this for last 15 years. You won't see lots of reviews for him unlike others but I would suggest to try him once for your job and you will know what I am saying...Thanks Miguel for all your hard work. Keep up the good work.

Upon my initial contact with Cory, I wanted to install laminate wood flooring throughout my home. He thoroughly explained the process of removing the existing wood and carpet and the time-frame to get it all done. He was always prompt (working nonstop on some days) and delivered beyond my expectations. In the process, I added painting some rooms and repairs to some of the walls. Cory helped me to envision some additional changes to my home and I will definitely be using him for those projects in the near future.

Julian came to our home to give us an estimate, which we found very reasonably priced. He explained to us his findings and how he would correct them. He worked us in his schedule the next day to replace a broken air conditioner disconnect and other electric switches. He was on time and completed our electrical repairs promptly and professionally. We are very pleased with his work and greatly recommend him.

Shane and his assistant repaired by deck to the specifications that we wanted. All the repair work was completed in one day and a few weeks later he completed the job by spraying my deck with clear waterproof. Overall, I'm happy with the work he and his assistant did.

Tom and his crew were awesome. His communication with us about start date and estimated finish was seamless. He is very professional, skilled, and meticulous with his work. He started by quoting us for backsplash, then paint, then deck repair, then tile repair...We let him do all of it!!!! Everything looks amazing and his pricing is very reasonable. We are about to hire him again to build a stand alone deck for our yard. You will not be disappointed with Tom!

Keith did a great job with the rebuilding of my patio deck. I was very happy with the service I got and the final product. I was also impressed by his professionalism he and Brandon displayed and they explained what they were doing and also came up with ideas to complete the job that really help exceed my expectations. The deck was repaired and they cleaned up all the debris that they left behind. I have other projects that I will be doing in the next couple of months and I will be definitely using Keith and his crew! I also recommend him for any home repairs you may have.

I had some old pipes burst behind the wall in my kitchen and he came and cut open the wall and fixed everything. I was so worried about the price because it was an emergency because I've heard stories about plumbers charging a lot for emergencies but he didn't! I was pleased with his prices. We bought this house as a fixer upper and I knew I needed a few more things done so we talked replacing the hot water heater and repiping some of the house. Drew fixed everything and was so easy to work with and cleaned up after himself. We ended up using him on our entire remodel (kitchen, laundry, 2 bathrooms). I highly recommend him to anyone who needs any sort of plumbing work done to their home.

David Duke installed a new electrical panel at my mother's house in Tucker, GA to get it ready to sale. He also repaired two ceiling fans with lights, installed 2 bath light fixtures, repaired garage opener, ran wiring in basement for portable heat/a/c unit, and installed new fixtures on outside of house we owned in Gwinnett County, GA. He is currently wiring the basement in our new home in Hull, GA. David Duke was on time, fast, efficient, honest, priced fairly and made constructive suggestions.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
