A real pleasure to work with Jontell. He was on time the same day we requested service. He was knowledgeable in handling some problems that cropped up during installation of our faucets and drain. He price was more than fair. I would definitely use him again. He does electrical, HVAC and carpentry.

Todd's crew demoed and built a new wall for me with closets in four long days. He underpromised and over-delivered. I need my home back before my family returned from a year abroad. They worked with two vintage doors, non-standard lighting, custom trim and framing without complaints. My 95 year old house has a ton of charter but not many right angles. But Shad, the mill worker handled it all with Grace and attention to detail. It came off better than I hoped. Would work with them in future.

This is my first time sharing a view on a public site. However, I had to share my experience. My husband and I decided to have our home painted, (after 11 years). We decided we'd also like to have the roof replaced, and we wanted 1 company to do it all. I received several estimates. However, I decided to go with Ray at The Art of Home Improvement because he was so reassuring and knowledgeable about the entire process. He and his team did an EXCELLENT job, and I am quite picky. They were totally professional and their price included pressure washing, sealing all of the cracks, hauling away. Ray was so meticulous and detailed with the painting. My home is beautiful and so many stop by to compliment us on the color. The team left no stone unturned. Spring is such a perfect time to schedule a new paint job. I am so grateful that we found a trustworthy and efficient company to get the work done. I highly recommend this company. Integrity and excellence are priceless. I must add that his prices were quite competitive and you will love working with him. I know that there are a lot of painters and roofers out there, but include his company in on the bidding process. You will not be disappointed!

Wow, let the photos speak! Sean and his crew of painters are professional, move fast, and have unbeatable pricing. My 2200sqft home interior was painted in 2 days. Team painted walls, ceilings, baseboards, and molding. As a first time homebuyer working with SnJ was mind easing because he doesn't mind sharing progression and status of the home improvement project.

If I had to sum up my experience with Mr. Pernell in two words: professional and trustworthy. Mr. Pernell demonstrated a level of quality, communication, and professionalism that exceeded my expectations and spoke volumes of his value as a contractor. He wrote an initial email response to a quote request with a professional candor while addressing my specific repair needs. Mr. Pernell arrived appropriately early and assessed the drywall repair, including a specific plan of action and cost. After we approved the amount, he set to work right away and completed the repair quickly, efficiently, and with utmost attention to detail. I have hired many handymen and contractors in the past, and without question, Mr. Pernell is the best I have encountered or hired. It is not often that you find an honest contractor who delivers quality and timely work on budget. I encourage you to consider this company for future projects. You will be just as impressed as I am. Feel free to contact me for a reference anytime.

excellent experience!!! As a first time home owner I was a bit nervous about getting stone worl done but they did the tuck-pointing job seamlessly. Communication was excellent, the work looks GREAT and the Mason was super friendly and informative. He even left me some extra mortar and told me how to use it in case I ever needed to do any minor work myslef. He even took a look at my garage door jamb and told me how I could cheaply fix the gap there. A company that doesn't try to nickle and dime you and is helpful AND sticks to their original quote is a gem. I will be using them for years to come for any work I need done.

Mr. Baynes has been a contractor for me for numerous projects in my home. The scope and nature of the project work included entire interior and exterior painting of a 6800 sq. ft. home, deck restoration and painting, siding replacement, new construction of sunroom, power washing of house exterior and driveways, new appliance installations, wall and ceiling replacement after major water damage, carpet installation, tile refinishing in the bath area, painting of exterior rod iron fence and gates and widow re-sealing and re-glazing. While home improvement projects are inherently stressful for almost any homeowner, Mr. Baynes’s services as a contractor were invaluable, and I have been extremely pleased with the final result. Specifically, I would give Mr. Baynes top marks in the following areas: 1. Quality of work performed. The quality of work done was consistently. Mr. Baynes was knowledgeable, skilled, and competent in his respective trades. He was conscientious about all of the project specifications, and his work product rarely needed improvement or revision. 2. Quality of work. Mr. Baynes was professional, reliable, courteous, and respectful of my property and privacy. He had an old school work ethic (often 10-hour days, some Saturdays), good work habits, strong safety orientation, and emphasized getting the job done right rather than doing it fast. His pride in his work was evident. He tidied up at the end of each workday. I also found him to be trustworthy, and felt comfortable with allowing him access inside my home. 3. Project management and coordination. Mr. Baynes’s prior experience working in construction really paid off. He was knowledgeable about all aspects of my projects, and was able to plan, coordinate and manage the activities, effectively. 4. Integrity and professionalism. Throughout the projects, I was impressed with Mr. Baynes’s commitment to generating a top quality product, rather than maximizing his profit margin. 5. Effective communication. Mr. Baynes kept me closely informed of work schedules, delivery dates, and projected completion dates of different phases of the projects. His communication was always clear, informative, and helpful. 6. Flexibility and effectiveness in dealing with unexpected developments. When unforeseen problems surfaced (e.g., water damage behind a wall; he worked diligently with me to identify solutions that was acceptable to me. 7. Responsiveness to my needs and concerns. Mr. Baynes’s commitment to my satisfaction was evident in his actions. 8. Truth in advertising. In his proposal, Mr. Baynes gave a clear breakdown of costs for each facet of the projects. His contract was just as detailed in describing the work to be done and the itemized costs. When the project was completed, all the work was done as described and agreed upon, and there were no hidden costs, extra expenses or unpleasant surprises. As a homeowner and customer, I felt Ms. Baynes delivered exactly what he had promised, at the agreed upon price.

Tom tiled three bathrooms, one laundry room and replaced my old back splash in my kitchen. He did outstanding work! He had to custom cut every singel tile for the backsplash - 60 square feet of tile. He really improved the appearance of our kitchen. He also remodeled our guest bathroom. He was going to tear out the existing outdated tile shower. However, since the shower was in such good shape, he recommended keeping it and just tile the floor and stoop of the shower. He painted the bathroom with two colors that tiled it all together. In addition, he installed bead board and trimmed it out. Excellent wood worker and painter too. I would highly recommend him!

Jammie came in after another installer said he could not do the job (tried talking us into a more expense material). Jammie took a look and said "no problem". He fit us in to his schedule and finished the job with no issues. Jammie took the time to pay attention to the details and charged us less than the original installer. The floors look great and we are already planning on using Jammie again for additional projects.

Hired Affordable Remodeling and Handyman to do some odd jobs around my house (replace an old ceiling fan, replace some ceiling tiles in a drop ceiling, change some light bulbs that required a tall ladder, and switch out some electrical outlet/light switch plates throughout my house). He even went above and beyond by going to Home Depot and buying a part that I needed for the drop ceiling without me telling him to do so. Keith was very responsive, and was able to accommodate my tight timeline. Would definitely hire again.

We had a white, multi-level kitchen island that we wanted to take down to one flat surface. After the original top was removed, Zoltan came and cut the island down to size. He then removed all the doors, sanded everything down to the bare wood, and repainted the island an espresso color of my choice. It looks FANTASTIC. He also attached new cabinet hardware. The island was originally a stumbling block, but now shines like new and is a true centerpiece of our kitchen. The entire project was done quickly and efficiently. He took great care to minimize the amount of dust created and covered all other exposed surfaces. Thank you Torteli Custom Woodworks!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
