Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best fence professional in Atlanta?

To hire the best fence professional in Atlanta, perform an online search for pros in the area. Using an online service streamlines the selection process by providing you with a list of top-rated contractors. Compare these pros’ ratings and customer reviews, and look for photos of fences uploaded by clients. This lets you gauge the quality of the contractors' work.

Georgia regulates contractors through the State Construction Industry Licensing Board, so make sure the fencing pro you choose can present a valid license. Finally, compare estimates and quotes from several fencing contractors in Atlanta before making a decision on who to hire.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The first step to setting up a consultation with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic is sending the pro a message, which you can easily do online. Ask potential pros if you can set up a phone call or video chat to explain what fencing services you need. A video chat is useful because it allows the fence installer to guide you so they can get the necessary information. During the consultation, discuss virtual payments, the timeline of the project and any precautions you’ll both take to ensure safety.

How can I find out if a fence professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a fence professional can be considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, check the website of your city or state government. Another useful resource is CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19, which provides information in a nationwide context.

Within it are 16 different categories of infrastructure sectors that are considered essential. But keep in mind that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Does a fence professional need to enter my home?

Fencing jobs are done outdoors, so a fence professional or contractor will most likely not need to enter your home during the project. The exception to this may be any electrical work.

However, you may be able to work with fence professional to give them the information they need ahead of time through video chats, emails and photos sent digitally. Avoid all contact and practice social distancing guidelines set forth by the CDC and your local government. Discuss the best approach with local fence pros before they arrive at your home.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Do fence installers offer remote or virtual services?

Because fence installation needs to be done in person, fence professionals usually cannot offer remote services. If you come across profiles that state they offer remote services, message the fence installer to see what those services include.

For consultations and meetings, ask the fence professional if you can coordinate a virtual consultation in which you explain the project to them through video, photos and drawings transferred online. If not, it may be wise to postpone the project and book an appointment at a later date

I'm having to hire a fence repair company to redo the gate installation and other fence panels that were not properly installed. I'm having to pay an additional $450 in addition to what I previously paid Quality Lawn Care! I've learned an expensive lesson! My gate has nails sticking out and can't be opened from inside the yard. The latch is on the outside of the gate; improperly installed! Never again!

Andrew and his team did a wonderful job on my 2-day fence install project! He was easy to communicate with, timely in his responses and his quote was fair and honest. We have other projects we plan on getting Fence Atlanta to complete for us as well. Can't say enough about how much we love our fence!

Leonard was responsive and professional during the quote process. Scheduled the fence install and showed up on time. The fence is sturdy and crafted with precision and care. I didn't take a photo yet but the lines are perfect. Leonard and his crew worked expertly with the odd terrain of the property and some trees and old concrete that were existing. The guys that came to work with Leonard were presentable, well mannered and made sure the the site was cleaned up after completion of the fence. I will hire them again if I need fencing at another property.

Great job! They did take a little while to get things scheduled once we had paid the down payment, but our fence is beautiful and we love it! We sent them a picture we found on Pinterest and they made it to our specifications. Luis was the guy who actually built the fence and he was very sure to make sure we were aligned on all major decisions. We have a huge rock in our back yard and they had no problems installing the fence into the rock. They worked fast, once they started, and the fence is perfect! We are very satisfied.

After obtaining several estimates for old fence removal and installing a new privacy fence for my backyard, I decided to use Andre with Quality Lawn Care Cares. Andre was always very prompt beginning with coming out to give an estimate, advising contact with county dig disaster prevention, arrival on the date stated for construction, and completing the fence project in one day. My wife and I are very pleased with the results and will recommend him to friends and family if needed.

Andre is extremely knowledgeable and detail-oriented. He was very flexible during the entire process. My fence plans changed from the original plan and he came back out no charge to adjust the quote. He is careful to dig only where it is safe to do so according to 811Dig. Some contractors will just throw up a fence regardless of knowing where power and communication lines are buried (My builder's contractor did this). He created an order for materials so that there was no markup. I was even able to get some of the materials cheaper since they had gone on sale. Andre had two additional workers on site the day of the job. They were all polite and patient even when dealing with one of my aggressive neighbors. The team removed my old fencing in a matter of 30 minutes! About 6 hours later, I had a brand new better quality nicer looking 6ft privacy fence along my property line and much larger yard. I would definitely recommend his services to others looking for fence installation or repair.

Thomas and his crew completed backyard clean up and installed a 300 ft farm style four rail fence for us... we feel like we just purchased an entirely new home. Outstanding work, completed the job in two days and fought through the rain to get it completed. The dog loves it!

While Dee and team did a great job with the actual fence/wood repairs and installation, there were some issues with the sprayers and paint splattered on the side of my neighbor’s house and mine. Dee and I worked out a plan where he paid me back for the expenses needed to clean up/repaint. He owned up to the problem and kept his word!

I have mixed feelings about my experience. Everyone was professional, respectful, and nice. However the quality of the fence I had installed is mediocre and the process with this company is kind of confusing. First you have someone come out and give you an estimate and take a down payment (1/2). This person records everything you want done and you agree on the job to be done. Next, materials are dropped off. Then soon after that, a contractor arrives and starts installing the fence. This is where things get weird. My particular contractor took over a week to finish 100ft of fence and he seemed to do it at his leisure. He also called me a few times during the process to help him pay for additional materials at Home Depot (I already paid the company for all materials up front.) He also called a few times and asked a lot of questions about what I wanted done. There seems to be a breakdown of communication between the person who you sign a contract with, and the contractor. Once the fence was finished, the remaining amount was to be paid directly to the contractor. I paid via check and the contractor called me the next day asking for another form of payment because his bank was going to take 3-5 days to deposit the check. For a moment I considered meeting with him and giving him cash, but I ultimately decided against this because I wanted a paper trail. Again, everyone was nice and professional up front. But the experience left me with a little bit of buyers remorse.

Mr. Kemaal was really a blessing to me. Thank you! My story: I was on the verge of being fine because my fence was encroaching on the community common property. He came out to evacuate exactly what had to be done. I had just lost my mom and 3 months prior my jod🤦‍♀️. My HOH wanted $1500 to remove and replace. Another company wanted $1200. Well needless to say I didn't have that kind of cash. Kemaal took the illegally portion of the fence and move to it my property line. All while using the same wood. He did an amazing job! I would highly recommend this company to my friends and family. With a grand total of $650. 🥳 I can not thank them enough. BTW Because he's such a stand up guy he installed a towel rack that I had been struggling with for months on gp!🖐 Thanks again!

Mr. Klecky showed up the day of my installation with a quote that was $500 more than what he originally quoted me. After some time he brought the price down by $100 but this was still $400 more than what he initially told me. He didn't fill out the building permit as I asked him ahead of time. I showed him messages of our exchange regarding the permit. He also did not come back and complete the work he agreed to. The team did a good job with the fence, but customer service ended up being horrible.
