Top notch carpet cleaning and air duct service. Very kind and dependable. I even asked for a bit of help hanging a decoration outside as we are moved in, Jerome had no problem taking his ladder out to give me a hand for the 30 second favor. I have no hesitation in hiring them again for my next cleaning in the fall.

We could not properly program the thermostat so we called Mr, Clarence. He had installed a new furnance and air conditioning units at our home a few days earlier. Mr. Clarence he said he would be right over and he was here within 10 minutes. He promptly programmed the thermostat and the heat was flowing shortly after that. If anyone reading this review needs his services don't hesitate to call him. You will be thankful that you did. I highly recommend CAL Property Care hands down. Selina Dashiell 1/7/2017

We are very happy, completely satisfied, and strongly recommend E&W Heating and Air Conditioning for HVAC service. Elerton came to our house to replace an AC motor and capacitor. He completed the work in a punctual, polite, and diligent manner at a very reasonable price. We will be using him for all our HVAC needs going forward.

Hello, I rarely do reviews when I purchase anything, whether products or services, but I had to leave a review in this case. I live just north of Atlanta in Woodstock, GA, and both of my air conditioning units were inoperable and it was getting hot. My default response was to call the typical big names in heating and air and get pricing estimates. I got several estimates from those companies and was stunned at how expensive the quotes were in most cases (a couple were more reasonable). After being uncomfortable with what I was being quoted, I resorted to trying to find a reputable repair company/person on Thumbtack.com, and it was one of the best moves I've made. I was connected with Ross from Service Tech and, admittedly, was a bit apprehensive at first just because he wasn't from one of the big box companies with which I was familiar. Long and short of it is, we met at my house and I knew within the first 5 minutes that this would be who I'd hire to fix my AC units. I kinda laughed because he came in with all of his tools and instruments like we had known each other for 10 years, and that's how i ended up feeling. Just a straight-up honest, nice person who manages to be all business yet personable at the same time. Didn't try to upsale me on "nice to have items" like one of the other companies who tried to sell me a furnace despite that I didn't need a furnace, but he did give solid consultation and advise on where I might be wasting money that I was perfectly willing to spend to "get the best". This guy reminded me that "best" is not always "best" nor the most efficient value proposition. I ended up outright replacing one outside AC unit and fixed the other. I told Ross that, at some point, I'd be interested in him coming out and replacing my second AC unit so they match :). In short, it was refreshing to know there are still people in business who are willing to combine expertise with a fair price. Love this guy and you'd be wasting money not to call him, seriously. For the record, I called Coolray, Comfortzone, Sears, ARS, and some smaller companies and choose this guy over all of them. No regrets. No personal affiliation...just satisfied customer.

This is the right man for the job! Having dealt with many heating and air professionals over the years, I know the challenges of finding a reliable professional who can solve your specific cooling issue without the hassle of an endless barrage of sales pitches for something expensive that you really don't need. So choosing Mr. Johnson to help me with my cooling issue was without a doubt the right choice. For anyone looking for an experienced professional to make your problem go away, he is definitely the right person to call. Thanks thumbtack for the hookup!

My rating is "VERY GOOD". Does this fall between good & outstanding? Old tub, toilet, vinyl surround, & ceramic tile surround were pulled out of my very small bathroom. They installed new plumbing, backerboard & the an air jet tub. Not realizing that they are more difficult, I chose small tiles. Gary did a great job installing the tile. Job was held up while we found condo bldg. water shut off. Some unexpected problems occurred, which is expected in any remodel job. I will rate some parts of this job as "good," as some faucet parts were lost & faucet had to go out & pick out & buy a new faucet. As far as what could have been done better - closer supervision of a worker with some personal problems, but the overall RESPONSE to the problems was EXCELLENT. Mr. Wilkins stayed in touch throughout the job. Gary worked very late to get all the tile in, grouted, & cleaned. The whole job took one week. I am very happy with the results.

My AC unit is about 25 years old however I have maintained the unit well! But every 2 or 3 years it starts blowing warm air which was the case here. The technician was able to address the issues and service the unit getting it back and pop working condition without a major costs. He also advised that the unit was in otherwise good condition and should continue to provide good service.

Never answers phone calls, returns texts or voicemails. This guy seems to talk the talk initially to give a good first impression. Jack has left me high to dry for 3 days now after initially agreeing to exchange work services. I see easily without a shadow of a doubt as to why so many people have given him such horrible reviews. Today as of 07/27/2017 I have called him throughout the entire course of the day ( 6 times )!!!! Only to be continually dismissed and ignored. NO EXCUSE!!! Then this guy has another helper answer his personal cell phone to tell me that Jack isn't around today. Then why are you answering his cell phone if he's not around!!??? Lies, lies, lies and continual time wasted! Nothing like having your wife battle cancer and undergoing chemotherapy with no moving air! Thanks buddy!!! You're a real winner! I hope you don't screw over other Veterans as well!!!??? It's over 100 degrees in this house and I would've easily paid him if he didn't want to barter in exchange for legal services. However... You have to at least to attempt to communicate with your potential client. Not ignore every single piece of correspondence. Then block all your clients telephone numbers according to other reviews from clients he's done nothing for. If you wish to have a RELIABLE, TRUSTWORTHY and Knowledgeable company handle your A/C, heating and various misc. repairs and maintenance needs.... I would HIGHLY SUGGEST THAT YOU STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!! What a joke. 3 days of ignoring clients. No excuse!!!

He explained everything so i understood what he was about to do and the cost. On completion he made sure my dryer was working good, and not over heating. Great service! Yves came out to check my hvac system on the same day that I called. He diagnosed and fixed the problem with ease. I am so grateful because another company erroneously stated that I would have to replace my system, which obviously wasn't true. Thanks again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.
