We offer the full experience learning piano at our studio. Students learn not just how to play, but music theory, how to perform, how to listen, and the love of music. We recently had a very successful recital, which every single student enjoyed and gained confidence and a feeling of accomplishment. I love the challenge of creating a custom learning experience for every individual student. I also love how much I learn from my students, and how each one of them makes me a better teacher.

My students need to have fun with what they are learning and I develop curriculum around them. That light bulb a student has over their head when they get something.

  • Sutton Studio LLC

    (12 reviews)

I constantly strive to help students become independent thinkers and creators --- and ultimately to be their own teacher. So, in addition to ensuring that students get the grounding they need in music theory, sightreading and playing technique, I constantly encourage and coach students to take ownership of their own learning. I encourage them to ask questions, express their own opinions, and participate in planning out their own assignments and practice (when they are old enough); I ensure that they become well-equipped with universal principles and practice techniques that they can apply to any new music; and I show them that creatively applying these principles to their practice can be fun. My greatest joy is letting a student go because they do not need me anymore! I love the challenge of teaching all ages, all grades, all ability levels, and all types of personalities! It is incredibly thrilling and satisfying to discover that special something that "strikes a spark" in an individual student and spurs them to work hard to achieve musical goals that are meaningful to them. Finding the right music for them to learn, the right teaching style, the right way to relate to that student personally, and the right level of challenge, are what excite and fulfill me as a teacher.

I'm a private guitar and bass instructor/teacher with 40 years of experience playing, performing, composing, recording, producing, and studying music. My focus is on instrumental music instruction and proper technique, although some voice coaching is available. You or your child will learn to play the instrument. I instruct reading, scale and key studies, music theory, composition, notation, ear training, proper fingering, and posture. I will travel to you, if you are in the Buford/Cumming/Lawrenceville/Duluth/Gainesville area of N. Georgia. Pricing depends on travel time and mileage. I compose my lesson plans. The student's material requirements are a playable instrument, a sturdy music stand, a 2" loose leaf note book, and plastic sheet protectors. Recording and computer musical production classes are also available.

What do you love about your job?

As a performer and teacher, I feel very privileged to work at what I love to do on a daily basis. Music fosters so many other types of learning, so I believe my work is very meaningful. The challenge of creating a custom learning experience for every individual student makes every day interesting, stimulating and rewarding. I also love how much I learn from my students, and how each one of them makes me a better teacher.

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

I started a part time performing and teaching business when I was 15 years old, playing for weddings and special events and teaching young beginners. I thought that was a very normal path. My dad owned his own business, as did many of his customers. I would say that my parents were a large part of the inspiration back then. Now that I have launched it as a full time career I owe thanks to many others for their encouragement and support, especially my teachers and mentors from both my undergraduate and master's degrees in performance. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. Building a business takes discipline, commitment, sacrifice and the willingness to "put yourself out there," but it is worth every ounce of it. A successful business is also heavily dependent on great resources like Thumbtack, and I am very pleased to have them as a partner.
