Steve is excellent! I've worked with many photographers over the years and he is by far at the top. He is so easy going, easy to work with, and he brings out the personality in you so your photos reflect that! He is patient and goes as long as necessary to get what you need. His work is beautiful, and his post-shoot organization flows easily and is quick to respond. And his pricing is very reasonable, especially juxtaposed to the quality of work he produces. Highly recommend!

Lindsey was gracious and fun to work with and accommodated the different styles of photography that different members of my family wanted. I haven't seen the final photos yet, but she did show us shots on her camera as we went along and the photos looked great even before retouching. One of the few photographers who didn't make my 3 year old daughter cry.

Working with Genetix Digital Films was a dream! when we first started wedding planning, I did not want a videographer because we thought it was unnecessary. Let me just say, I am SO unbelievably glad that my parents decided to get us one anyways. And I'm even happier that it was Genetix! They captured our day beautifully-- from start to finish. And it was a long day! we also switched back and forth to different locations all day and the videographers followed us everywhere! They made sure to capture EVERYTHING and we are so thankful! The trailer video was beautiful and so fun to share with family and friends. We would have been happy with just the short feature film! Yet Randy also delivered us with an hour long full length wedding video. This was just the icing on the cake! I highly recommend Genetix to any bride or groom looking for a videographer. They deliver amazing results!

Diego was without a doubt the most professional photographer I have ever experienced. His sharp eye and keen instinct allowed him to perfectly move the lighting around for phenomenal photos. I will most assuredly go back to him for all my future endeavors in photography. Diego has an affordable price and schedules himself to meet his client’s needs. He has a charming personality and is very understanding and flexible with the people he works with, which directly results in a happier demeanor and more cheerful outlook that shows in the face of the people he takes photos of. I highly recommend him for anything from professional modeling portfolios to casual family photographs.

Not only is Paul a friendly and charming person, his photographs were perfect! He captured everything at our Gala - from couples posed to candid shots to the auction and the dancing. As a "photographer" myself, I appreciate photographers who look for shots beyond the typical. Paul will be my recommended photographer from now on.

Kaz Artis has to be one of the BEST photographers I've ever worked with. I got married at an outdoor venue that happened to get pelted by the worst weather from a tropical storm that was coming. Not only did Kaz work with my husband and I to get some pictures during the rain, he even extended his time to take some pictures during our reception - which was not contracted for initially. He sent us some photos the same night and they looked amazing. If you want a professional, funny and amazing photographer, Kaz Artis is the perfect photographer for you.

Big, big fan of Holland Reid Photography. Very professional with great instincts, I'm always interested to see what she is shooting. So many photographers find a bit of success and then don't stray from their path. Holland seems to explore opportunities with each new shoot. I appreciate the variety of fresh perspectives she captures.

I'm not sure if we can say enough good things about Greg. He was easy to communicate with from day one. From setting up a payment schedule, to discussing ideas, to execution, he was AMAZING! He and his team went above and beyond to make sure we got every moment we wanted captured and so much more. He was always open to our ideas, which was key for us. He was extremely professional, but also personable and easy to work with. I would use him again in a heartbeat, and recommend him to anyone with video or photography needs.

Matt came and did some 1 year photos for our family with our daughter. We used someone different for her birth photos and while they were good photos before, Matt had a great eye for where to take photos and how to take them that other photographers seemed to miss or lack. He found some beautiful outdoor spots in our town and took us there for several hours of shooting. They turned out great and he also sent us all the electronic files, edited for the best shots. We look forward to using him again!

We used Patrick Thomas to film our wedding ceremony and reception in Fall 2013. Mr. Thomas was very professional in our all of our meetings. He also had comparable prices to other videographers. Mr. Thomas allowed us to view and request specific footage to be captured in our DVD. Mr. Thomas was more than willing to handle minor issues during our wedding day to ensure his product and our day was a success. We highly recommend Mr. Thomas for any event as he was wonderful to work with, unobtrusive, affordable and the final product was amazing.

This was the first time using a professional photographer for my real estate pictures, it will not be the last and I will be using Phillip. The pictures turned out great. Hope it adds to a quick sale. He was very reasonably priced so it fit the budget for a lower priced listing. Thanks Phillip for the quick response and turn around time. Tommy D.

I very seldom take the time to post reviews regarding service; however, because I was so impressed with the service I received from HD Shot Studio I wanted to share my experience. I was working on a proposal as part of a consulting team and the decision was made on a Friday to include headshots for each team member and it had to be submitted by Sunday. Because I did not have a professional headshot I immediately contacted photographers in the area that could accommodate my short timeframe and deliver the headshot in the same day. I contacted HD Shot Studio from my Google search and talked with Dean who worked me in on Sunday and delivered the photos within a few hours. Given that I hate taking pictures, Dean was professional, easy to work and with made the photo shoot fun. He gave me different options with background and poses and spent enough time to deliver a terrific headshot. Thanks again Dean! I would recommend your service.

If there was a 6th star I could rate, I would rate Chandler as 6 stars! Chandler filmed one of my magic shows in Atlanta and did a fantastic job. Looking through the footage, the colors and lighting were balanced perfectly and he even filmed the entire event, plus stuff before and after! In addition to his superior film and video skills, he worked as a professional not bothering me while I was setting up or performing, which is a huge deal for me. I've worked with videographers who nag me non-stop about "do you want x" and "Hey can you look and tell me what you think?" With Chandler I knew I could just tell him to film something great, and he pulled through. Would recommend.

Ike and his crew were great to work with! They were quick to respond and worked really well with our photographers and really just blended into the background of the day. They traveled out of state and spent literally the entire day with us. The video is fantastic- if you are considering whether you should get video, you should! And we got a ton of material for a great price. My favorite is the 3 minute film of the best parts of the wedding. They also did an awesome thing where they got all our guests (we had 60 people) to come and say something as part of the full length hour long video like a live guest book which was so fun to watch and was like re-living the day! Overall great experience and product- definitely recommend.

Daniel did a shooting for my AirBnB property, and the photos he took are stunning. I'm beyond happy that I chose him because his work would be nearly impossible to top. The photos weren't just great quality, they were also artistic. Daniel went above and beyond for me, making sure I had the perfect shot for every room in the house. The next time I need home photos done, which will be soon because I'm creating an event space, Daniel will be the only photographer I'll call.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
