How does your business stand out?

We offer the full experience learning piano at our studio. Students learn not just how to play, but music theory, how to perform, how to listen, and the love of music. We recently had a very successful recital, which every single student enjoyed and gained confidence and a feeling of accomplishment.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I love the challenge of creating a custom learning experience for every individual student. I also love how much I learn from my students, and how each one of them makes me a better teacher.

I'm 54 years, have a Ph.D. in chemistry and play piano at an advanced level for leisure. I decided to purchase a 7 foot grand piano to start learning and reviewing pieces from the past without a teacher to guide me. Though I was able to master most of the pieces I wanted, I was having difficulty with several. Thus, I started looking and found Ruthana. I found she was overall an excellent teacher. She showed me a better way to position and move my hands for greater clarity and speed in my playing. She gave me a renewed sense of how to integrate bringing the melody out while tending carefully to the underlying chords and notes. I got complemented by listeners that heard me play the pieces I had learned from Ruthana. She also has a great smile and is desiring to help you out well in many ways. She is especially great for working with children and young adults. She connects very well with them. There was a piano recital a few months ago where I was witness to this. (You can also see the children on her website.) She also gives lessons to advanced students like me. There was at least one other student who played the same or better than me, and numerous intermediate level students. I recommend Ruthana and I know that if you visit her you will want to stay with her.

I came to Ruthanna as a saxophone player looking to learn the piano after some time away from playing my horn. I really wanted to get into Bach's music and right away she had me working on some of his inventions. In about a year and a half, we have covered quite a bit but some of my favorite pieces so far include Brahms's Waltz in A minor, Chopin's prelude in E minor, Debussy's Reverie and The Sunken Cathedral also by Debussy. Most of these pieces are ones that I have picked out and Ruthanna has been very patient with me as I learn how to play them. She has always encouraged me to play the music I like. Without Ruthanna's help I would have spent much longer trying to teach myself this music. My sight reading, sense of rhythm, musicianship and harmonic analysis have definitely improved from time spent playing the piano with Ruthanna.

Ruthanna was wonderful and a delight to have in our home. We hosted an annual Christmas dinner party so she played Christmas music all through the evening including our group singing along after dinner. Our guests all enjoyed her talent and pleasant personality. We will use her again!

My daughter is having a true musical experience, not just learning how to move her fingers. This is what we have been looking for, and which is hard to find.

Both of our sons (6 and 9) take piano lessons with Ms. Ruthanna. After my own childhood experience with piano and violin lessons, I have to say my sons are very lucky to have her as their teacher. She's so knowledgeable about teaching them. She does the Suzuki part to help with training them by ear. But, simultaneously, she teaches them note reading, so they are getting a very complete piano education. She's also incredibly patient with them. She wants to connect with them. She moves them right along, but in a positive and encouraging way at all times. She has a great sense of humor and meets them where they are at. I highly recommend Ms. Ruthanna as a piano teacher.

Ruthanna has been teaching my two boys for several years and I am very pleased with how much they are learning from her and how much their playing has improved over the years. She is professional yet fun and always makes the lessons interesting. The boys look forward to their lessons and practice regularly without complaints! I would highly recommend her studio.

Ruthanna is very professional. I was very impressed by her knowledge of different pianos. She was able to thoroughly explain which type of piano I should buy for my son and why. My son really likes her. He says she is a really nice teacher.

Ruthanna has been a wonderful teacher for our 5 year old. She is patient, fun, and amazingly good at connecting with a young student who is new to piano. Our daughter loves her lessons and voluntarily practices the piano at home-- she's having a great time and learning quickly too. Five stars!

I love taking lessons with Ruthanna. Her pianos (she has 2) are beautiful and she is a very patient teacher. Her schedule is flexible and she custom designed lessons around what I wanted out of playing piano. I couldn't have found a better fit for my needs. I'd go on about Ruthanna, but I have to go practice.

Q&A

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I do continue to regularly perform with the Georgia Philharmonic symphony and local chamber groups.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I studied piano at a conservatory from the time I was seven years old, and it was a very natural choice for me to continue my love of piano as a career.
What types of customers have you worked with?
In addition to lessons, we have recitals so that students learn about and enjoy performing for each other and their families. We offer advice and guidance with finding good practice instruments. We work with each student and/or family to find the best lesson times and practice schedules so it is a good, balanced experience that fits well within busy lifestyles.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Our recital last Friday night was an absolute success! All of the students performed on a brand new semi-concert grand piano and loved the experience. Everyone received a medal to acknowledge their accomplishments over the last year. Our photos will definitely be uploaded to the website!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
When hiring a piano teacher, it pays to research carefully. Do they have a website that explains their teaching philosophy and qualifications? Is the other information on the website helpful? How long have they been teaching? Can they provide recommendations from other students? Doing your homework on this person will pay off in the long term.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
I wish it was easier to understand the difference between a teacher who can help a student with correct basics and technique and the average teacher who simply gives surface corrections. I have personally had both kinds of teachers, and the difference is truly night and day when it comes to the student's success and enjoyment of piano.
