Nicholas Sullivan says, "Our daughter began participating with Prodigy Performing Arts through the musical theater program. Since her first show in summer 2021, I've seen her grow from a puppy in 101 Dalmatians Jr. to a villainous eel in Little Mermaid Jr. During those years, her confidence and stage presence have grown astronomically. After initially only participating in musical theater, our daughter received further exposure to Prodigy through extra-curricular clubs at her school. That's because Prodigy's owner Jodi Kempany goes out into the community and meets students where they are. That being said, she also greatly utilizes her studio space that has been renovated in the past couple of years. This past school year, our daughter began attending dance and acrotumbling classes on Saturdays. She had danced at a different studio for the past few years, but this was the first time we went through a whole dance season without any push back from our daughter.During school breaks, including the summer, our daughter has attended several camps at Prodigy. Virtually every one includes a special program on the final day for the parents, and our daughter seems to have mastered a new skill for every camp she attends. At the end of the day, the most important thing to us is our daughter's happiness, and she genuinely enjoys every day spent with Jodi Kempany and Prodigy Performing Arts."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
