MOC did an excellent job switching out my kitchen faucet set to repair an awful leak. The cost for the job was very reasonable as well. Also, after he completed his work, he cleaned the area very nicely. I will definitely use their services again and refer him to others.

Larry did a great job on some door installation projects in our home. We had bifold doors removed and slab doors installed on our laundry room, and a screen door installed on a nursery as the main two projects. Larry was on time, thorough, and very helpful taking his time to explain things and even pick up two doors that wouldn’t fit in our vehicles. We appreciated him very much and will likely use again for home projects as we are not handy people ourselves :)

We had old 1960's paneling in our kitchen and a useless double-window forcing us (and guests) to use the laundry room as our only exit to the backyard deck. We contracted John to remove the paneling and windows and install French Doors and drywall the kitchen with fresh paint. John did everything we asked to get our windows and walls changed out to French Doors and drywall. His guys and he worked at a pace that exceeded our expectations. He even finished trimming out the outside of the French Doors during a rain storm. We liked him so much, we hired him to build and install a sliding barn door to cover our frame-less entry to the laundry room and hide the w/d. We hired him for the second job in our kitchen before he was done with our French Door build-out.

Extremely professional and knowledgeable. He gave me more than one option to repair my roof and siding, based on my budget. I'll be honest, I am on a budget so I chose the cheaper option. However, I have to admit the finished project looked as though I chose the most expensive option. After seeing his completed work I have decided to hire him for other home repairs. Overall, I have to give him the highest rating and suggest others take advantage of his honest quality service.

The gutters were installed as promised on the day promised and they look great! For a great price as well! It rained a few days ago and the gutters work perfectly! The guys were very courteous and friendly and didn't leave any mess as everything was spotless when they left. I highly recommend Rush and his crew for gutter installation at your home today!

Various jobs at my home. Installed recessed lighting, plumbing that ranged from installation to repair of disposal, faucet, drain clogs. The job was at home and he finished the jobs within the agreed upon time frames. What impressed me about his service was the level of commitment to customer satisfaction, professionalism, and the quick yet thorough assessments. He has gone beyond on several occasions. He is committed to timeliness and perfection. I use him on many of the properties that I oversee.

Brasco Construction and Remodeling provided us with an outstanding job of siding installation, Hardie shingle shakes, porch ceilings and exterior trim. Fred was given a complicated repair situation and took it on with no problem. He was on site much of the time and stuck with his bid, even when he came upon an unexpected application. There was no constant need for communication like some contractors, he just got the job done. We hope to use Fred and his contacts again in the very near future. Fred is the "real deal" and that is hard to find these days. Nothing but the highest praise for this company!!

Doug and Decka Enterprises did a great job for me. With the recent weather in the area, he worked with me to schedule my door repair at a time that worked for both of us. He took his time to do a quality job and took the time to explain any of my questions of the process.

We hired Chris to help us fix poor work from a previous contractor on our flooring project. He was responsive, priced fairly, clear on expectations, and did a great job. We liked him so much, we added projects to his scope (such as changing light fixtures and repairing drywall) and he completed those timely and gave us great customer service. I would recommend him to anyone looking for quality work around your house!

Tim replaced two of my windows where the old seal had broken. He left a message on Friday that my order was in and installed them on Monday! New windows should be easy to clean since they can be removed from the inside. I can see out again. Thanks Tim.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
