Hunter did a fantastic job. He dropped what he was doing on a Saturday to help me deal with a leak and still charged me a very reasonable price. I’d have paid double if I went with one of the big plumbing companies. He was very knowledgeable and took care of the issue quickly. I’ll definitely use him again.

In November 2015 I hired Mr. Hood to perform roof repair to fix a leak. He responded promptly by phone and I explained where I believed the leak was coming from. He stated he could come by the following day to inspect and give an estimate. As promised he showed up on time and provided a fairly priced estimate and stated he could complete the repair the following day, which I agreed to. Long story short, he had to come back two additional times before the leak was finely repaired. Being a former construction contractor myself, I understand how difficult it is to “retro fit” an existing issue especially a roof leak. Mr. Hood promptly replied to each of my text messages letting him know that the leak was still happening after the next rain. He always replied promptly and scheduled to come out the following day to repair. On the third attempt he successfully repaired the leak which was thoroughly tested with the torrential December rain we had. ***The point I would like to make is that Mr. Hood was always very professional and on time and did what he said he would do and his repair quote was reasonable. I would recommend him to anyone who asked. D. Houston

Hired Bobby to do some remodeling to get our house in shape for selling. he had a lot of good ideas on changes, fixes, upgrades that would enhance the value. He provided a detailed estimate at a fair price and did an excellent job in performing all the work. he even went above and beyond and did some work not in the original estimate...and did not charge us! he always showed up when he said he would and worked long hours to complete the project when he said he would. I had planned to hire several different contractors for the project (remodeling, painting, landscaping, general clean-up) but Bobby was able to do the entire project saving us time in trying hire and manage several separate contractors. I would highly recommend Bobby & Christian Brother Remodeling for any remodeling project.

First time using Thumbtack to find a contractor and Dustin of Courtesy Flooring did an exceptional job with flooring 2 areas of my house. I added on an additional job re-grouting a tile floor in a master bath which he completed quickly and thoroughly. I couldn't be more pleased with his professionalism and quality of work. He really enjoys what he does and it shows in his work! I will definitely use this company for future projects as well.

As an engineer we have a saying that goes "good, fast, cheap; pick two). We got pushed back a little further than originally anticipating but as I worked in construction and weather it was understandable. They were BY FAR the lowest price on architectural shingles and lower with this price than all but one or two who quoted 3-tab shingles. I didn't see any nails on the ground after the job and Ray told us we could load any trash besides paint and something else before the trash company picked up the container a couple days later. They pay per pound as that's the only way I've ever found plus haul and deliver and maybe number of days. Ray was easy to work with and I know we had some plywood sheets replaced. Cover your stuff in the attic as there was a mess up there which I should of anticipated as he said he replaced several sheets. There were nail penetrations in the attic roof (quite a few) which I could bend sideways with a hammer. I'm not stating that last part to complain but more so as a courtesy to the business for future clients. We feel we got much more than we paid for which is VERY rare when dealing with contractors. If you want super pretty attic ceailing it will cost you and the competitors who bid a lot more didn't guarantee it to us except one who did use a better pad but was also a grand and a half less than TWICE what The Art of Home Improvement charged. I would recommend to my family members and friends in a second (unless they want a metal roof which I don't know if they do or not.)

I won't lie I had some reservations about using an outside source to do the work.I could not be more pleased however with the results of the job. not only was Kenneth professional , he was punctual and always polite. What I liked was that he kept me informed about every aspect of the job and his time line. Kenneth Arrived on time each day, ( could of slept that Saturday though, lol) and made sure that I was completely satisfied before he left. Also,I never had the chance to thank you for fixing mother's faucet, she loves the hot water. Over all the work was beautiful and the price was fair,I definitely got my money's worth and recommend him to any one who needs a contractor.

Rafael and his team did an outstanding interior painting job at my condo. I needed to repaint my one bedroom condo walls and ceiling. This was my first time using Thumbtack to hire contractors so I was little skeptical in the beginning. I met up with several contractors for an estimate but the quote and schedule did not work. Rafael was willing to work with quick turnaround schedule for a reasonable price. Throughout the whole process, he was honest and very responsive. My condo has a strict HOA restrictions for contractors but Rafael still came through and brought in his team to paint my place! His team arrived at at a scheduled time and Rafael updated me to let me know second coat was needed. We've already discussed second coat price so it was not a surprise. I went home after work and my place looked amazing! Even the corners of the wall looked neatly painted and the color was just as I expected. They also unmounted my TV, took down the curtains and unscrew nails before they painted the walls at no additional cost. Of course, the TV was mounted back on the wall just like before after the paint. Overall, I'm satisfied with the paint job and most importantly the reliability. Buying a house and moving can be very stressful but Rafael made the painting portion of my place so easy. No miscommunication, no surprise fees and prompt response throughout the whole process!!! THANK YOU! I'm referring him to my friends and will come back for another business in the future. See you again!

After looking around for a general contractor, I luckily came across Mr. Anthony Njoroge! I initially hired Anthony to reface/polish the kitchen cabinets in my home. The cabinets were in a really bad shape -- they had thick stubborn oil residue all over them. Anthony came and looked at the cabinets and assured me that he will make these old/stained cabinets look brand new -- And sure enough, once he was done, I couldn't believe my eyes...! The cabinets now look BRAND NEW!! Anthony saved me thousands of $$$$ by fixing my old cabinets!! After seeing Anthony's work ethic, and experiencing great customer service, I have decided to hire him for more home improvement projects! (i.e. Upgrading Kitchen Counter-top, Installing Storm-Doors, and many more such projects!) Anthony is your ONE-STOP-SHOP for all your Home Improvement needs! He has a very positive and friendly attitude, exceptional customer service, and he genuinely cares about helping people and saving you a lot of $$$$ in the process. He is very creative and has unique ideas for improving your home in a way that you probably never even thought possible! He is very professional in his approach and his #1 goal is customer satisfaction! I can honestly say that he is in this business because he loves to be creative and he truly enjoys helping people! He puts himself in the customer's shoes which allows him to be very reasonable in price!! I am very thankful to have Anthony has my 'ONE-STOP-SHOP-CONTRACTOR' and I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone who is looking to get QUALITY work for a VERY FAIR PRICE! He has over 20 years of experience in building homes/general contact work, and I assure you that the quality he provides is unmatched! You will NOT be disappointed! HIRE HIM!

Great job! We had a full kitchen with island done, and also tile back splash. Our job was under a very short time frame and JD Granite was fantastic! Came out to template on Saturday and had fabrication done and installed on Wed. I would HIGHLY recommend JD Granite for great pricing, expert craftsmanship, and reliability. I have been in the construction business for over 30 years and am the owner of Heritage Electric LLC in Roswell, GA. I have seen and worked with many contractors over the years and my recommendation does not come lightly. 5 Stars all the way for this company.

Teyon is great to work with very attentive and willing to accommodate any last minute updates or changes without any push back at all. Overall this probably one of the best experiences I've had dealing with the contractor. And that's saying a lot because I've had a lot of work done on my house.

WS Flooring did a good job on our flooring work in our house. This included installation of new hardwoods (in formerly carpeted rooms), stripping and refinishing existing hardwoods (to match the new ones) and installation of new carpet in remainder of the house. WS worked with us to provide the specific carpet product we wanted (which we'd been shown by another flooring contractor). WS was responsive, honest and flexible with what we wanted and worked around our scheduling. Pricing was good value. We had received 3 separate quotes for identical work. WS ensured we were happy and fully satisfied prior to accepting payment. I would not hesitate to hire WS again for another flooring job.

Overall I am very pleased with the way my gate turned out. The only hiccup was when Keith came out he quoted me a price which I assumed was for labor and materials. Turns out it was for only labor. Yes it was stated on my quote, but everything was done on his mobile phone to process our transaction. I did not open the quote to review. We talked and it seemed great so I hired him. It has been a very rare event to have a contractor come to my house and only quote me labor and if they did, they specifically mentioned it to me while talking. I should have asked, but I felt like Keith should have stated it was for labor only. In the end Keith ate half the cost ($150 roughly) of the materials to make it right which was very much appreciated.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
