Cortese and his crew appear to have done a fine job. He discovered a couple of areas that did not need the expected work. He had estimated some replacement plywood was needed. It wasn't..... He issued a $300 credit toward future work. We have not concluded this part of the contract.

Let me began by saying I am a contractor that purchased a second home in Columbus that was in needed of exterior fascia and siding repairs. Needless to say it was a daunting task trying to find a good contractor (by my standards) to work on my project. And then came Donovan and his crew. He comes across as a serious and dedicated worker. Donovan’s efficiency accompanied by courtesy was refreshing and impressive. He called when he said he would call, and did what he said he would do. He also emailed pictures of the work daily, from beginning to end. It was as if we were there watching the removal of each board and its replacement. Awesome!!! His reliability and integrity are above question as far as we are concerned. Thank you Donovan and crew for a job well done.

Rod did an outstanding job on a roof repair which lead to doing additional work repairing a chimney that was improperly done twice before since we owned the home. He explained in detail the process of the repair. He replaced rotten wood that seemed to be painted over before, fabricated wood around the door frame that was rotten. I greatly appreciate the attention to the slightest of details around the exterior of the house. Again, pointing out other areas that needed attention before painting the entire house. Rod was timely and completed the entire job, not juggling our project with others. I will use him again for repairs or any house issues that need addressing. He is honest, does outstanding work, and leaves the job site neat and clean. I highly recommend him for any of your handy man needs or home repairs.

Professional and efficient. A few mixups as to initial appointment but everything went smoothly. They cleaned my apartment while I was at work and my dog at home. Main issues are that they missed a few spots of dog hair, didn't put things back (e.g. dog bowls and bed), or take out the trash. I could've asked them to come back to get those areas of dog hair and wipe the windows, and i'm sure they would have free of charge, but didn't feel like it was worth the hassle. Also - was surprisingly expensive for my small and pretty clean apartment.

I highly recommend Darren and his team! The did an outstanding job on my GA home! They not only completed the interior painting but several repairs the home needed such as door repair, lock replacement, a/c repair, wall repairs, replaced the thermostat, fixed a missing piece of the kitchen floor - Darren and his team are truly a jack of all trades! Darren was also very cost conscience and saved me money every chance he could. A++ service! Honest and trustworthy! I will definitely use them again in the event I need future work done. :)

After posting on Thumbtack, Shane from Weather Shielders contacted us right away. I told them my mother had a leak dripping from her ceiling off and on since Christmas. It all started after the heavy rain we received in Columbus. Shane called us right away and it was a very rainy Saturday afternoon. He said he would come right over to inspect the roof and we so impressed that they were willing to do this in the rain. Shane and his associate were very polite and knowledgeable They thoroughly explained the condition of our mother's roof and gave her detailed explanation of the problem. They also did a thorough inspection of the whole roof and attic space to make sure there was no other damage. He gave us a professional and detailed printed estimate that included exactly what she would get and the cost. They told her they could repair the roof the next day, which was a Sunday and usually their day off. Shane and his associate arrived the next morning and worked hard most of the day to complete the job. I feel Shane and his associate were very honest , trustworthy and did Quality work. We will definitely call them again if needed. Thank Weather Shielders!

We have had Mark Daffin do several projects. Mark is very thorough in explaining exactly what must be done, gives quotes in a timely manner, and does the work when he says he is going to do it. He has replaced a 6-ft wooden fence including two 6-ft gates, pressure washed and stained that fence and the 30-ft. wooden fence on the other side of the house, installed a carport attached to the house (commercial grade with gutters and downspouts), and pressure washed our driveway and part of the house. Great work, Mark! Steve & Linda

Steve is honest and dependable. The quality of the work was outstanding. We enjoyed working with him during the remodeling of our home inside and out. He replaced the outside siding, painted, replaced the roof and built a deck with a roof. He also remodeled the kitchen with new cabinets, counter tops and tile. We will be remodeling the bathrooms in the future and will use Steve and Our Little House again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
