I recently had Kerry and his crew complete a project to repaint the exterior of my house. I had been a little apprehensive with dealing with many of the different contractors around the area but once meeting Kerry and going through our initial walkthrough I was a lot more comfortable. His crew (Bryson and Valentine) that worked on my home were great and did everything to ensure everything I wanted was accomplished and I was satisfied. I along with the rest of my family are extremely happy with the finished product and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a contractor to complete an upcoming project. Thanks again guys. My backdoor threshold was rotten and needed to be replaced. All other contractors indicated that I would have to order a new door, but Mr. Wilkins said he could replace the damaged wood and reseal it. He quoted a fair price and was able to schedule the job quickly. Due to some of the water damage, my wood floor needed repair as well. I had some extra pieces and he was able to replace the floor too. Work was done in a few hours. I am really happy with the work performed.

Hunter did a fantastic job. He dropped what he was doing on a Saturday to help me deal with a leak and still charged me a very reasonable price. I’d have paid double if I went with one of the big plumbing companies. He was very knowledgeable and took care of the issue quickly. I’ll definitely use him again.

General Contracting - I had several projects to be done as we were getting to put my home of 8 years on the market (kitchen leak, kitchen bay box, shutters, paint, deck). After reading all the reviews, I decided to contact Michael to get a quote. Due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn’t originally meet him on Friday or Saturday, so he took it upon himself to come on a Sunday (which is pretty unheard of since most contractors usually don’t work on Sundays) to assess the job and do his pre-inspection. The quote was more than reasonable for the amount of work I demanded and Michael was hired… All jobs were done in a timely manner; it took approximately 2 weeks due to the weather and schedule conflicts. He kept me informed of what was being done each day and sent pictures of any findings needing attention. I would call Michael and TNT Building and Remodeling LLC if I ever need any work done on my future home and would recommend them to anyone.

Jose' and Ali are finishing up several projects at my house. The big one was a renovation to my patio where I wanted to remove 2 of the support pillars, add a LVL beam and change the existing beams to stacked stone. It was a big project, but the job they did is outstanding and they did it in record time. They also replaced 2 doors that were rotting out. I've been looking for a contractor like this since I moved into my current house. They have earned a customer for life. Their prices are very reasonable, they work very hard to make sure it's right, and they do fantastic work. They'll be back for the other future projects I can dream up, not to mention the repairs that any house needs from time to time.

After being totally screwed by another contractor, we turned to Tom to fix the problems the other contractor left behind. Tom was reliable, punctual, and respectful. He was extremely knowledgeable about kitchen backsplashes and was all about QUALITY work. We would absolutely hire Tom Tile for all our home improvement needs and will be recommending him to friends.

We had our roof replaced back in September. The roof was a catastrophe, I didn't think it could be fixed. I was concerned with bugs, rain and othe large creatures that had open access to my house. Dash Construction and there staff was helpful, thorough, knowledgeable and never sparked a bit of anger with my hundreds of questions. They made our translation a breeze and made my home beautiful again. I would definantly say give them a call. I would again in a heart beat.

The project is not quite complete, but Jeff has been awesome every step of the way, answering all of my many questions and providing me with great advice and tips, from a professional contractor perspective and from a design perspective. He is very responsive, and his team is responsive, too. They are good about explaining changes that have to be made and generally keeping me updated. I could not be more pleased!!!

Brent was great to work with! He was prompt with his on-line response, he was on time to evaluate the project, is very knowledgeable about the siding/trim replacement, and gave me a verbal quote before he left. After hiring him for the project, he and his crew arrived on-time every morning, and typically worked into the evenings to complete the job on schedule. He is a hands-on owner, with attention to detail, and works side by side with his crew. You can count on him to be on-site, and personally manage the quality of the work. I’ve hired several contractors throughout the years, and right now, I have a hard time thinking of any that were better to work with than Brent. Definitely two 👍 👍!

Chad saved the day! He turned horrible and very expensive tile work done in two baths by previous contractors into very nice looking finished baths at a very reasonable price. If you need tile work done, Chad and his partner are the people to hire. Outstanding workmanship and professionalism! Only wish I would have hired him and his partner first. Could have saved myself the thousands of dollars spent for poor workmanship by prior contractors and a lot of stress and time. Drew Gierman Conyers, Georgia

WS Flooring did a good job on our flooring work in our house. This included installation of new hardwoods (in formerly carpeted rooms), stripping and refinishing existing hardwoods (to match the new ones) and installation of new carpet in remainder of the house. WS worked with us to provide the specific carpet product we wanted (which we'd been shown by another flooring contractor). WS was responsive, honest and flexible with what we wanted and worked around our scheduling. Pricing was good value. We had received 3 separate quotes for identical work. WS ensured we were happy and fully satisfied prior to accepting payment. I would not hesitate to hire WS again for another flooring job.

Provin USA is great to work with and do the best stone work in Georgia. They are competitively priced but it is the workmanship that really sets them apart. I chose them over 4 other counter top contractors because were the most professional and guided me through the whole process with ease. I have done multiple projects with them with great success. You owe it to yourself to call Provin USA for any project you may be considering.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

We’re looking for someone to do a remodel in our bathroom. The bathroom is quite small, and the only full bath in the condo, so we would need it done quickly (only a few days would we want to shower at the gym). The bathroom isn’t in great shape, and I’d like everything redone (new tub, new floor, new vanity, new toilet, new sink, new mirror, new lighting, fresh paint, new finishes, the works). The tub right now has one of those paneled surrounds, and I would like it tiled. The floor is laminate and I would also like that tiled. The bathroom is approximately 5ft by 7 ft, not very big. We have a budget of $3,000 including labor and materials. I have shopped around at home depot for things I like to just only get an estimate on the materials. We live inside the perimeter on Buford Highway (close to North Druid Hills Rd). If possible, we’d like this done in the next few weeks. Thanks!
