Scott arrived the day after I called him to fix a problem with our irrigation system when other companies in the area said it would be a month. He arrived on time, problem solved the issue and completely fix it within an hour. Scott brought his son and son-in-law to teach them his trade. All 3 men were professional, polite, and knowledgeable. I will use them again for future repairs.

Mr.Preze and his men installed a 10 zone irrigation system at our home. He and his team exceeded our expectations. They not only installed a quality product, they did it at a fair price,IN a timely manner. At the same time they were neat and courteous at all times. What we were most impressed with was the time spent to protect and put back the yard and landscape as he completed each zone. At the end of the project he spent the time to walk us through each zone, set up the controller, and showed us how to use it. Preze irrigation brought value to our home.

There is no better company to install a new irrigation system. The price quoted cannot be beat by anyone, for the amount of work to be completed. He arrives when he states he will. I must say he makes you feel like you are apart of his family. Attention to detail is something that impressed me as well. I highly recommend.

Quoted $7,000 over the price of 5 professionals that came out and quoted. His price didn’t even include irrigation, so it’s actually $10,000 over. Be careful.

Omar was THE BEST!!! He came out to me discuss a bad drainage issue and new sod installation and removal of bushes. He even came back a second time at my request to go back over everything w my SO. His pricing was fair and he was on time and very knowledgeable. He answered all our questions and included me in choices he was making as the Work was progressing instead of assuming how I’d like something. He didn’t take short cuts and was meticulous in his work. It was the first company in a long time I hired for anything hat I didn’t feel like I need to supervise their work. He installed a drainage system, timber retaining wall, new sod and mulch for us. He also removed many bushes, relocated some sprinkler heads and transplanted trees. Everything was done w great care and no shortcuts. You would be making a HUGE mistake to hire anyone else!!! Our neighbor put in new sod the month before and was so upset when she compared her lawn to ours. Her lawn was thrown down w lots of gaps and ours looked like a piece of carpet!!! Omar also made sure to get us very high quality Zosia. Omar is awesome and I fully recommend his company and service! We can’t wait to use our new yard!!!

If you need an irrigation system installed, Tony Little is the man to call. Tony responded quickly to my request for a detailed estimate to meet my new landscaping needs and his estimate was reasonable compared to other estimates obtained. He is well versed, very knowledgeable, and he custom designed a system that met my special needs. Extensive travel required that my system be connected to my cell phone as well as connected to my landscaper's cell phone so we could control it from in or out of the country. Tony is extremely conscientious and detail oriented. He coordinated his job with the brick path mason and my landscaper always marking with flags the location of his buried system. Tony Little is the owner of his company, Instant Rain. Different from other companies who send out a top man to make the estimate and contract, but whom you never see again, Tony is there working with his crew until the job is complete and the final bill is presented. Strongly recommend Tony Little and would suggest to anyone, do not bother waiting for other estimates. Sue Smith & Arthur Repke

I originally had Eddie out to quote me on refreshing an overgrown planting bed and fixing clogged underground drain lines. Eddie did a fantastic job designing the planting bed without breaking the bank. His original quote was very reasonable which allowed us the flexibility to make changes on the fly, including adding a sprinkler system to the planting bed. He was easy to work with and very responsive, even answering texts about the design on weekends and at night. Regarding the clogged underground drain lines, Eddie saved me upwards of $1000 compared to other quotes. Eddie identified where the pipe was clogged which turned into a very easy and cheap diy afternoon project. I will hire Eddie again.

There aren’t enough great things I could say about Elmer and his company. Not only did they do a beautiful job but it was done quickly and professionally. We needed to re-sod our backyard and he came for a consultation and then installed TWO days later. We loved him so much, we hired him for some other lawn projects we needed as well. Elmer and his company are 5 Stars!!!!!

Nelson offered the most visionary and comprehensive proposal from the beginning to let us see what he would do, not just a quote. While at the same time, he was open to incorporating our modifications. The scope was large and got larger, requiring several serious mid-course negotiations. But the result was spectacular, including a water bowl feature, paver patio, stone/stucco wall, and grass/shrubs/trees – all accented with landscape lighting. On the down side, the electrical, drainage, irrigation, and lighting (mostly done by subcontractors) had to be reworked and I did not like having to argue over me absorbing extra costs. The end result though is a stunning showcase for us now and we would highly recommend Nelson.

Javier came out to provide me with a quote for irrigation system when he said he would. He showed up early on the day work was suppose to begin and worked through light rain all day. He finished up on the 2nd day and helped walk me through sitting up the controller and made sure all the sprinkler heads worked properly before leaving. He cleaned up after himself and my yard looks great. You can hardly tell where he dug in the yard to bury the pipes and sprinkler heads. I would highly recommend him for anyone looking to have sprinkler system installed.

I bought a new home that needed a full landscape makeover. From turf installation, fence repair/construction, retaining walls, resloping, irrigation system installation, etc... Dakota and his team did it all. We had several hiccups along the way between disgruntled neighbors and payment options being blocked, but Dakota took is in stride and delivered a quality product. We still have a lot of work to do, and I hope to continue hiring Dakota's team for ongoing maintenance. I highly recommend these guys!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
