Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

Noel was an absolute dream to work with- he kept in constant contact with us through our project, talked us through all of our options for our home remodel, was clean and considerate and polite. I would definitely hire him for our next job, and will recommend him to our local friends!

So glad that I met Larry. We hired him to install 11 interior doors (a mix of slabs and prehungs), install trim and once they arrive he'll be assembling and installing cabinets for our new kitchen. He's a nice honest guy and full of time saving tricks from years of carpentry. Thanks Larry!

Bruce Hood was fast, thorough and gracious! He got our repairs done very quickly, considered our child's nap time and was able to keep any sounds down enough that she was able to sleep two and half hours through the work! Our master bedroom flooring looks better than before and the closet drywall repairs are perfect! We will be using Hood Construction in the future and recommend him to any one!

Dustin did a fantastic job on our kitchen backsplash. We wanted a herringbone design, and many others told me it was either too difficult, or the price was more than we hoped for. Dustin sure delivered. The precision, care, and craftsmanship he gave was more than we could hope for. He knew what he was doing, and he asked questions I wouldn't have thought about to ensure we got what we wanted. His suggestions were spot-on. I'm pretty picky and have an eye for detail, and there is not a single flaw in the complex design. He was friendly and easy to work with, and his price couldn't be beat. We will absolutely call him back when we remodel our bathroom.

From some past experiences, I was a bit sceptical but was pleasantly surprised. In the contracting arena, since there can be a lot of unknown variables and it's all about finding the right attitude.... these guys have the right attitude, Jose likes to do what's right and do a good job and make the customer happy.... they did a good job for me, I was happy.. they did some framing for me on a master bath remodel I was doing.

We hired Jairo to repair the kitchen ceiling that was damaged because of a bath tub water leak. He figured out that there was a bigger problem and not just the bath tub and fixed that issue too and perfectly fixed the ceiling. He worked late and communicated very often and sent a lot of great pictures.

What a great company to deal with. I've used them now on 3 different projects. The first was a bathroom remodel. The work was completed ahead of schedule and I have a beautiful bathroom now. It was so nice to have a worker who cleaned up after himself everyday, never leaving a mess behind.

Hired JD Granite through Thumbtack to give us kitchen countertops and backsplash. Jeferson came out on a Wednesday at 4 PM, right when he said he would be there and took measurements and gave a quote. He brought a sample that we liked and we chose it and he made a template right then and there! He said he would be back Saturday and would start in the morning and that it might take 2 days. He was finished before 4 PM on Saturday! Not only did he finish ahead of schedule, and a week faster than anyone else that had quoted us, our kitchen looks AMAZING! This company does quality work at an affordable price. He has increased the value of our home and I am still in awe at how great our kitchen looks 3 days later. I cannot recommend Jeferson highly enough. He is courteous and does great work. He shows up when he says he will show up and gives a fair price. I will definitely be using this company again and will recommend them to everyone I know.

Fernando and Gabriella were a pleasure to work with! Fernando is so talented! They kept me informed about the schedule. Always responded to my texts or phone calls. They made several trips to my home and provided me with samples so I could determine the cabinet color. They took care to cover and move furniture and protect the floor while they were working. The finished cabinets are beautiful! I plan to use A& B again to make a vanity when I remodel a bathroom.

After interviewing FIVE contractors, I chose Alex Granados to repair, demo and completely remodel both bathrooms in our rental home. BEST EXPERIENCE WITH A CONTRACTOR WE EVER HAD!!! His pricing was the best value, his work is absolutely flawless, he stayed on schedule, gave good guidance and advice on alternatives along the way and kept a spotless work site! His level of quality and workmanship is amazing--big compliment from my perfectionist self! We will also use him to remodel the kitchen next, as well as do other remodeling projects on our own home. I literally have NO complaints with Alex or his work. I'm so thankful to have found him! Now I don't ever have to shop around or do research. Honestly, words can't describe how satisfied we were with his work. I have referred him to everyone I know.

Nickolas and his crew did an absolutely awesome job on our small bathroom remodel. They were very knowledgeable of current trends, gave great advice, and were timely both in terms of communication and in completing the job on schedule. The finished product also exceeded our expectations. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire him again, and would highly recommend him to anyone who is considering having any tile work done.

I had my master bathroom remodel and the backsplash in my kitchen done. Leo and his team were awesome. They are professionals and perfectionists! They were on time and an easy to work with. My bathroom was done in 2 and 1/2 weeks and that's demolishing the shower down to the frame. We love the look of our bathroom and the backsplash! We already have another project planned that Leo will be doing for us next year.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
