Travis does great work and is very efficient. He took care of 3 projects in a short amount of time that would have taken me hours to complete. He mounted a TV on my wall, installed a pet door, and also installed a baby gate on my stairwell. His pricing is reasonable, he's flexible, and he's a very professional guy. I appreciate how he checked in periodically to make sure the work was being completed to my satisfaction. I'm already working on another list of projects I'd like for him to complete!

Ben and his team did a great job of repairing a leak in my driveway! I called on a Saturday and they came out the same day and got the job. They do quick, efficient work, and they clean up nicely when they are finished. More important, they charge an extremely fair price for top quality work. I would definitely hire these guys again. I highly recommend them!

I hired TNT to do a rebuild and re-pitch of a roof over my sun porch, delete skylights, install 2 new doors for said porch, and fix various places that had water damage around the house, to include an area under the deck that was causing the deck to pull away from the house. With that amount of work needed, and before I talked to anyone, I knew the price for the work would be in the upper thousands. I chose TNT because they had a very fair price in the middle of the range of quotes I got, and the best value for that money. One thing I encourage anyone hiring a contractor to do is make up and sign a contract with them. DO THIS with ANY contractor, and LEAVE THE DEAL if they give you a hard time about wanting a contract. Michael and TNT have a contract already made up, and you and them can add/take out whatever you want before the job even starts. Michael even told me that he really liked that I asked for a contract because it protects BOTH parties. On my end, I put in a provision that before I gave him any money, I had to have a walk around with them and let them know whether or not the work was up to my liking. This was no problem, and they would answer any questions my wife or I had, and showed us examples if needed. So, really everyone, always get a contract!! As for the work, everything looks great! Our roof actually lets water drain into our gutters instead of leaking into our sun room. Our house does not have any more holes in it from water damage or animals, and it really helped the curb appeal of the house. Most important, the deck was not just pulling away from the house the joists under our master the deck was attached to were water damaged. I was shown where all of the problems were so I could understand what was happening and how they would be corrected. It only added 1 day to the timeline, which we were glad about. The guys (mostly Michael's sons) came on time, and cleaned up after themselves everyday. We have 2 dogs who use the backyard and the gate was not left open once when they weren't there. We can't even say that about ourselves. Hopefully you have read this far down and I hope I have helped ease your mind about going with TNT. You won't regret it. Ask for the contract, make it your own, and enjoy whatever project they do for you!

Terrell Services hauled off years of tree trunks and limbs from the wooded area behind my home. Truthfully, the task was overwhelming. Chris knew he could do it, and he did. The cost was very reasonable considering the number of loads and the sheer volume. He left my driveway and my yard in immaculate condition. The wooded area looks great. I am absolutely thrilled with the job Terrell Services did for me!

He was professional, the low bidder on the painting of my 16' gate and worth every penny and then some. He was prompt, eager to start the project without being over eager and did a really nice job. He paid attention to the details and came in considerably less than the other four quotes I received. I gave him a nice tip for his professionalism and quality of work! Would use again and again and again to take care of projects around my home.

Mr. Baynes has been a contractor for me for numerous projects in my home. The scope and nature of the project work included entire interior and exterior painting of a 6800 sq. ft. home, deck restoration and painting, siding replacement, new construction of sunroom, power washing of house exterior and driveways, new appliance installations, wall and ceiling replacement after major water damage, carpet installation, tile refinishing in the bath area, painting of exterior rod iron fence and gates and widow re-sealing and re-glazing. While home improvement projects are inherently stressful for almost any homeowner, Mr. Baynes’s services as a contractor were invaluable, and I have been extremely pleased with the final result. Specifically, I would give Mr. Baynes top marks in the following areas: 1. Quality of work performed. The quality of work done was consistently. Mr. Baynes was knowledgeable, skilled, and competent in his respective trades. He was conscientious about all of the project specifications, and his work product rarely needed improvement or revision. 2. Quality of work. Mr. Baynes was professional, reliable, courteous, and respectful of my property and privacy. He had an old school work ethic (often 10-hour days, some Saturdays), good work habits, strong safety orientation, and emphasized getting the job done right rather than doing it fast. His pride in his work was evident. He tidied up at the end of each workday. I also found him to be trustworthy, and felt comfortable with allowing him access inside my home. 3. Project management and coordination. Mr. Baynes’s prior experience working in construction really paid off. He was knowledgeable about all aspects of my projects, and was able to plan, coordinate and manage the activities, effectively. 4. Integrity and professionalism. Throughout the projects, I was impressed with Mr. Baynes’s commitment to generating a top quality product, rather than maximizing his profit margin. 5. Effective communication. Mr. Baynes kept me closely informed of work schedules, delivery dates, and projected completion dates of different phases of the projects. His communication was always clear, informative, and helpful. 6. Flexibility and effectiveness in dealing with unexpected developments. When unforeseen problems surfaced (e.g., water damage behind a wall; he worked diligently with me to identify solutions that was acceptable to me. 7. Responsiveness to my needs and concerns. Mr. Baynes’s commitment to my satisfaction was evident in his actions. 8. Truth in advertising. In his proposal, Mr. Baynes gave a clear breakdown of costs for each facet of the projects. His contract was just as detailed in describing the work to be done and the itemized costs. When the project was completed, all the work was done as described and agreed upon, and there were no hidden costs, extra expenses or unpleasant surprises. As a homeowner and customer, I felt Ms. Baynes delivered exactly what he had promised, at the agreed upon price.

Well, we had to replace the old kitchen counter tops. This was a big deal for us. We were a little skeptical because this would be a higher cost on a site we barely used but once before. However, the first time we used this site was a good experience to get my gutters cleaned and driveway power washed. Thus, we pressed on. So we narrowed down the quotes/comments and Eduardo seemed the most reasonable and sincere for our budget. He did walk us through the process and the kitchen counters look fantastic! He did give some great advice and the final work looked incredible. We get great comments when people see what we did to the counters and that is what you see when you first walk in the door. Yes, I will use him again.

While building a gate for a fence he used a dull skill saw blade leaving ragged edges on the fence. He should have replaced his blade. He also left a 4x4 post much higher than the rest of the fence 4x4s as he did not have his chainsaw with him to cut it. He said he would return to fix both items, but never did. I paid him (too much) in good faith even though the job was not completed as expected.

I needed the gate hardware adjusted on my gate. He arrived assessed the damage, told me what his strategy would be and started right away. He was very polite and had a lot of patience as he worked to make the necessary adjustments to the hinges as well. Although he worked to provide an immediate solution, he gave me suggestions for long term improvements as well. I felt very comfortable with him at my property and would hire him again.

I contacted David to build a deck for an above ground pool I had installed. (He was referred to me through a coworker) He was nice and polite every time I spoke to him, he cameout looked over the job site, and asked detailed questions about what I wanted. He got back to me a day later with a quote that was very reasonable. He installed the deck a few weekends later. He and his helpers worked quickly and cleanly. The deck was finished by the end of the weekend. Great quality. A few months later my homeowners insurance wanted a gate installed and David was out the next weekend putting it it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

2hires owner Kieth is very polite, responsive and understanding. His goal is to make sure the job is done right and to the customers satisfaction. I did have some installation issue with getting my single door to a double door installed. The Workman ship was rushed and the initial install was done poorly. With that said Keith assured me he will make it right. This caused a significant delay in completion. Keith sent a new set of installers to correct the installation, as well as the staining. This process was a pleasure the installers took their time and resolved the issues. I also hand the staining done by Greg’s Pro Painting who was sent by Keith. Keith and his crew did a great job with staining the mahogany doors. To the point where I hired him to repaint my garage door. At the end of it all the doors are installed and I am satisfied.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
