Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a general contractor when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a general contractor, avoid any physical contact, don’t shake hands, keep 6 feet of distance between you and the pro and sanitize all involved surfaces. Also, use digital platforms to communicate and make payments.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Robert with Sully's did an excellent job on our deck. He was aggressive with pricing and didn't seem to cut corners. We are very happy with the new deck and use it almost daily. I would use Sully's Homeworks in the future.

Robert did a great job on my deck. He came the first day to pressure wash and help me select the stain. The next day he worked diligently to stain my deck. I didn’t like going out on my deck before; now I’m out there all the time. I will definitely hire Robert the next time I need work done on my home.

TLDR: Would not reccomend for deck staining, especially if you are looking for a hassle free service provider. He is not knowledgeable about decks. Terrance provided a competitive quote for deck staining, and then when he saw the deck he raised the price - which we thought was fair, since we do have a large deck. I asked him if he wanted to use a chemical stripper on the deck to prep prior to staining, as this is what I had read online, and he said this would not be needed with pressure washing. I trusted him as the pro. While pressure washing, a wasp unfortunately stung him, and this is where everything seemed to go downhill. He came back the next day with a swollen hand and tried to strip the deck, as he said the deck had been painted instead of stained, and needed a stripper - once again he didn't use a chemical stripper, just the machine rented from Home Depot. Of course, the cost of the job went up again. He understandably was in pain, and I encouraged him to take time off and return when he felt better. He had barely stripped 1/10th of the deck, but came back a week later and applied the stain on top of the existing paint - and left us with an uneven, very sticky/tacky deck that has not dried in over 2 weeks. This is not surprising, as he stained over the paint. Additionally, our deck gate is now off it's hinges - likely due to the pressure washer being directed at it. While some of these issues may have been avoided if he was more of an expert with decks, my biggest issue is not his expertise but his communication style - he argued and yelled at me when I was trying to explain to him the problems with the job he did. We paid him for the job prior to viewing the job, which was our fault. He returned 1/3rd of the money presumably because he knows he left our deck in a bad state, but of course we argued for a while about that too. We now have to hire someone to fix the damage he has caused to our deck using a dry stripper on top of everything else. I really encourage you to DIY or hire someone else even if they are more expensive.

Steve is outstanding! Steve pressure washed and stained our deck. He had the best price of anyone we talked to. He was very professional, punctual, and considerate. I am so happy with how our deck looks and feel much better about the overall condition of the deck. I had a lot of questions, and Steve was very patient and kind in answering all of them. He was also willing to work with us to make sure we used a good stain in the shade our HOA wanted. I highly recommend Steve of Handy Pressure Washing!

We hired DeWitt Construction to complete a complicated deck repair. We had several other companies come out to look at the project and none of them were able to address the problem. DeWitt Construction immediately assessed the problem and presented a plan to fix it. The work was expertly completed and the deck now looks brand new. I would definitely use them again.
